Hey All,
Got one! 1976 Infinity Day Cruiser w/460 & Berkley jet.
Spent Saturday on the water out of Fisher's Landing...miles of smiles! Got my first tow, ran out of fuel (note to self, fuel gauges DO NOT WORK!)
Got a couple questions for the group:
1. Do jets steer like ass or what?
*never operated one, this one is lazy to turn on the plane and at idle, forget it, break out an oar!
2. Are the Berkley rudders worth the $129? Pros/Cons?
3. Is anyone running a rack and pinion steering? Pros/Cons?

Couple more pics.

few more...good story behind the cooler...ask me on the water someday.

I dig the cooler set up!!! Slow speed turning is an issue with jet boats. Learn to use blips of the throttle to get better response. If you have a place diverter (trims nozzle up and down), you can adjust it to help too. All the boats I've had used teleflex rack and pinion and had no issues. I've heard pros and cons about rudder (mostly cons). JMHO.

What are the cons?

creates drag, doesn't help steering at all. Also, there are plenty of used ones for sale, so look before you buy new. That way if you end up trying it and not liking it, you're not out new price.

Rudder is supposed to help in slow/idle speeds
Like sam said "slight throttle burst help in slower speed turns"
Its just characteristic for jets
You get used to it in time and figure out how to maneuver
Btw. Nice looking boat and congrats

Congrats on the boat man

right on, thanks for the comments....the peddle is new, so really stiff (that's what she said, lol)...so maybe a shot of PB Blaster and the throttle bursts will be smoother.

Going out there for easter... did you find any shallow areas?
-
Mom, I am the new guy so don't take my word, however, everyone we ran into was amazed at how high the water was...did see one sand bar just north of Fisher's right before the big rock on the left...if you stay way right you would miss it. tons of crap floating, lots of reeds.
Where can I get a good boat cover?? Wally World has cheap ones...do they weather well? Would rather throw my cash at something that will last and protect my boat.

Got a week at Havasu book already...Prob going to hit Elsinore or Parris in the next couple weeks....got an oil leak to work out....
Ok, so I have an A-Frame and shop to work out of....should I just snatch out the motor and seal it up?
Can you get a ticket if you have some oil problems on the water?
-
I generally boat up past picacho from martinez. Theres some beaches up there on the left. Your oil leak could be a loose oil drain plug. The BBF likes to leak out the dip stick hole to.. keep it off and get a large rubber vacuum cover/sleeve to go over the hole. Just keep the dip somewhere else safe and handy. Cheapo walmart cover then toss a grey tarp over that. The marine cover will still breath but the tarp will keep the pollution off the good cover and give it longevity. I have been doing this for years and it keeps the moisture/mildew to almost zero.

Mom, what part of SD are you? Do you boat fresh water around the County?
-
Bought cheapo cover on Amazon (about $70) and got two Yuma summers out of it before I accidentally tore it trying to get water off the cover (had a couple of gallons built up and used a broom handle under the edge to try and lift the center). Double check your cable routing for too tight bends in routing, it can cause cable to bind and drag.

I'm starting my 3rd Arizona summer on my cheapo Chinese amazon boat cover and will replace with another one when due

Nice boat, I love older day cruisers, they're probably my favorite boat. Jet boat steering is about anticipation and use of the throttle, that throttle is your best friend. The boat reacts slow to your input so you've got to plan ahead. Use reverse to drag the ass around to help align you, kind of like steering a forklift. Rack and pinion steering is fine, it's the most common as well. You'll get better at it with a little practice.
