ok so im going to get a new engine for my boat. heres the options either just buy a long block 460 or i have a guy who builds circle track engines been doing it his hole life, great reputation, he said he will build me a kick ass engine for 3,000$ to me that sounds like a pretty dam good deal. But what do you guys think?

i think we need a little more info. what all are you getting for that price? is that quote to rebuild your engine you already have?

What ever way you go, make sure that the tolerences are correct for a marine engine with an open cooling system (it makes a difference).

Is that guy reliable? I can't tell you how many engine build horror stories I have heard. Definitely, don't give him all the money up front, and have a contingency plan if he doesn't finish it, or delivers a pile of cr@p.
I'd also be asking if he knows anything about Ford 460's. I don't ever remember those being used in circle track cars.
Personally, I would just get a new long block, adjust some clearances for boat use as someone mentioned, and call it done.

Call Paul. (Lakes only), as these guys said. He knows more about 460's than the guys that designed it. :beer: :beer:
You can recite aftermarket part numbers to him with whatever combination and he can tell you whether it will work or not, and/or what part numbers you SHOULD use. This is the one guy you want in your corner on this, and in the future, on 460 builds. :thumbup:
A prime example would be Rivertard. I don't think, in the few years I've know him, he's had a single engine last a season. Normally goes through 2 or 3. I can't think of ANYBODY harder on engines than Mike. The engine he has now, built by Paul, has lasted what? we're going on a year and a half almost? :thumbup:
If I lived in Cali, he's the only guy that would touch my shit. Period. As it is, I'm 6-8 hours away, and so we play phone tag while I buy parts and equipment to measure what he's laying down.

alright thanks guys. :thumbup: an no i wont give the money up front to the guy , an i dont no many circle track cars that used a 460 either but what i was trying to say is that the guy knows his shit, he builds engines that rock and roll, i need to talk to they guy today and get more info so when i here back from him again today ill fill you guys in.

A guy can know his stuff about engines, but not be familiar with what it takes to keep an engine alive in a jet boat. For instance, anyone can put together an Old 455, but not many can make the modifications necessary to make it last, unless they are familiar with it in that application.

This is true but since they guy builds circle track engines i mean i dont watch that stuff a lot but those engines from what i hear and seen they do take a hell of a beating and are under constant stress just like a jet boat. im not trying to make an argument but im just saying that he knows what it takes to make and engine last a good long time. i did talk to the guy yesterday he told me what he was going todo, its a lot to type in every little detail but he said he's only wanting to take the ratio up 9:1 and that and that he said with out making me go broke he can make that thing push 500 HP with no problem

Just to make sure I am following this thread correctly. You said you are using a 460 Ford and you are going to spend $3000 for a rebuild and you are going to get 500 HP no problem?
I am not sure that equasion adds up, 460's are not cheap to build, parts are more expensive than 454's. I am not saying it's impossible, the guy may just work for real cheap and make no money on the parts he sells, but I dont think 500 HP is easily acheived for $3000, not in a BBF at least.

Well its what he said so i am just going off what he said, i don't think he is full of it. but thats just the rebuild price thats not including putting back in the boat and rewiring the whole boat
i also think he gets a really good discount from his suppliers,

500 HP should be easy for a proper 460 but the devil is in the details. If he is using top quality parts he is going to be doing the labor nearly for free. Like brother Ralph always says "Cheap ain't good,and good ain't cheap." Truer words were never spoken.
Oh and I just gotta throw this in for the regulars on here. Latest issue of Engine Masters does an article on a Mopar. Stroker crank, E-brock heads (stock) and .060 bore and the right cam gets over 560 ft/lbs. @ 3000-5500 rpm. Try that with a BBC bwah hah ha ha. Nothing at all exotic. And it will run for evah! O0

I think you could easily make 500hp from bbf for $3000 if you have a solid foundation (CJ heads or ported DOVEs) and good hook up on machine work and parts. You sometimes get some good deals on parts on 460ford.com but like everyone else said, call Paul (Lakesonly) first. He's probably forgot more about 460's than I'll ever know!!!
Ps. Nick, you can build a bbf stroker far cheaper than a bbc.

Pick his brain apart. tell him what you have, what you want and what your budget is. tell him what you use it for/how you use the boat. just ask him any relavent question you can think of.
