Title: New engine hatch system
Post by: AngryJosh on May 18, 2016, 08:29:33 PM
Whelp, at the Avi Saturday evening at the mothers day meet I was a bit toasty and forgot to secure my engine hatch straps, which at 70mph proved too much for the hatch. The fucker decided to lift off and remove itself from the boat. What that means is it tore itself loose and ripped the bimini clean off too. I remember turning around to see it flying through the air. By the time we turned around it was floating its ass down the river like a raft. Soooooo, Ive since reattached it, replacing the gas struts that obviously sank to the bottom of the river; and attached this nifty chingadera that not only lifts the hatch up and down, but secures it if I ever 'forget' to latch it again...
The video is waaaaay more impressive but seems I can only attach pics

If I could suggest something I would build a metal brace to attach that engine ram to. Those screws will back out of the wood. Mine did that multiple times before I built the brace. I don't have a pic of the brace that I built on my boat but here is a sketch I'm talking about

I also had the engine hatch brace professionally painted lime green to match my boat, so you could do it purple or grey to match yours and dress up the engine bay a little. Just a suggestion so you don't see raw metal

The brace is good to have, I have one on my boat as well cause the ram will pull the bolts right outta the wood

I've had my gas shocks for years... I use a ski pole that goes through the front as a security method if lock fails.
