Title: new guy new to jet boats wanting opinions
Post by: outlawed on May 01, 2012, 09:22:13 PM
wanting a cheeap boat to play around with and learn my way around jet boats before really diving in. just wondering what you guys thought about this hondo hull?  is that a jacuzzi pump? should i steer clear and look for something else?  he is asking $2750 for the boat. havent seen it in person yet to check out the actual condition but acording to the seller the motor (bbc) has an oil leak somewhere and the "forward/reverse cable housing needs re-attached. other than that i know noting at this point. mostly concerned with geetting a decent hull and pump. thanks!

Up side it's got a bbc and you can always find the parts u need. Hull looks decent also.

as with any boat, check the basics.

cracks, fiberglass or alum tanks, delamination, stringer condition, floor condition, gelcoat condition, does it run, check the wiring, check the upholstery.  boats arent "what am i buying?" they're "what do i have to fix?" they can turn into HUGE money pits easily. ask about last oil change, last service, etc.  if they took care of it they'll be able to just talk easily about the boat and that means they took good care of it.  if things simple things like a $100 steering cable need replacing, chances are a LOT of things need some attention if you look hard enough. lastly check the trailer, are the bunks in good shape, fenders, tires, wiring, bearings/grease.

Depending on what you are looking for this might not be the right hull for you.
I have basicly the same boat and can tell you that it isn't a fast hull without bottom work.
It doesn't have much interior room (4 people for short trips, 3 if you want an ice chest).
The pump started life as a Jacuzzi WJ but appears to have been modified (droop and Berkeley reverse bucket).

The price is right and you might be able to find a better hull without an engine and build a nice boat.

Good luck

Cool looking hull but....

Very cramped interior wise, Crewchief actually has a little extra room from the regular Hondo Pantera. Pretty much a 3 seater, 4 when cramped. Also they don't turn very well from the factory, I have a very large turn fin on mine now to make it turn. Also you would NEED splash guard on the back, they sit very low in the water and are easily sunk by wakes due to being so low and skinny in the back.

But in general I think they're a very cool looking hull, love the body lines. Can be made to go decent speed with work, fastest I've had mine is 82mph with 550hp, but not done playing with setup. And the price is very good on that one.

Pdub

Crewchief's and mine
