I'm not sure where to ask this question so I put it on the general forum. I just bought a 1987Caliber jet and plopped it in the water and of course the battery was dead! I brought it home and it's taking a charge but I noticed a few quarts of water in the bilge. It hasn't even been run yet and was only in the water a maybe 10 minutes. Any ideas on acceptable bilge leakage? I will take it out again tomorrow and try to get it started and look for the leaks if it starts.

it could be leaking from anywhere. old crusty hose, loose hose clamp, hole in the bottom of the boat. who knows.

You can fill the boat up with a garden hose and see where it runs out onto the ground at.

Is it possible it may have been old water that was up in the hull? Sometimes water makes it's way up under the floor and it came out
when you were backing down the ramp.
Assuming everything is sealed and there are no cracks/holes in the hull, look where the water comes into the boat: the drain plug and inlet pipe from the jet for the motor cooling.
Was the plug in? Is it in good shape? Sometimes simple stuff is easily overlooked.
Are all the cooling lines and fittings tight and in good shape?
Take a look around the jet, inside and out, and look for any blown out gasket or silicone. Any loose nuts around the intake or bowl?
Are the packing rings loose or worn? These are rope seals that seal the opening where the shaft comes out of the suction housing.
They may need to be tightened or replaced.

Thanks for the info guys! The plug was in the Berkley Jet 1" hole and appeared to be tight. I bought a new one just in case! I will let the Battery charge and take it out later today or tomorrow and see what's up if possible. I will check for leaks after that by the suggestion of filling the bilge and capping to see where it may be leaking.

I had a major leaking through my swim steps last summer. It had old rusty hardware. Stainless steel bolts and silicone fixed my issue

No swim steps and the only thing underwater was the intake. I was hoping someone would say once the pump gets going water is discharged that might be entering through the intake section. I am going to check thoroughly for holes, etc. that may be allowing water to enter. I was really hoping for a river ready boat but it is used and getting up there in years like me ;D

The water pump is a hose coming off the pressure side of the pump.
Packing gland/rope seal at the thrust bearing is supposed to leak water to cool the shaft. If mine were in the water for 10 minutes not running I would see a couple ounces of water in the bilge. My pump is fresh as is the rope seal. Check for loose bolts where the suction housing bolts to the intake near the bottom of the hull.

Someone mentioned doing testing on the motor at the launch ramp. Maybe just back it in keep it on the trailer and see if you can find it that way. That way you can check for bubbles all around and be just waist hig water

I took mine out yesterday for test/tune and had a bit of water coming in somewhere...not bad but I dont even have any drips from the packing(zerk fitting cured that). Got it back and filled a few inches...small drip coming out of the trans bowl cover. Cleaned/dried it up with a dap of silicone on both sides...
