Not too impressed with this "new" engine...ripped off by an old man

So, my vacation is in 3 days. Boat running rough. Feels like a dead hole. Do a comp check, sure enough, #7=0 psi. Pull the valve cover find a shredded valve keeper and some shavings. Undo the rockers, and the intake valve is stuck frozen halfway down. I tried to get a good look at the piston with a stick camera, looks ok I think. I may have found a better set of heads today. I'm gonna go for it and hope for the best. I will post a pic when I get the head off.

Ok, head is off. Got some valve marking on the piston. There was a stripped head bolt. I'm not throwing heads on this. Looks to me like a bone stock truck engine with a giant solid lifter cam. Anybody know anybody with a BBC?

Looks like a stock style piston to me. That sucks,  same crap happen to my buddy,  motor was fresh ha ha,  fresh flat cam.

hell if your going on vacation really soon! buy one new valve throw it in that head put it back together and enjoy! it should be fine! deal with a new motor later!

I am right with you Mobboss. I have a couple irons in the fire. I will do my best to figure this out by friday. Thank you for the advice, that is a very good idea. 7 days at the river without a boat is not what I was planning on. Maybe I will just take a cab to Roadrunner and float home  :beer:

yah if it was running before you tore it down , with a new valve and keeper it should be just fine. my guess you floated a valve. which is not hard to do with a big cam and a stock motor!.

Okeedokee, everything is prepped and ready. I pickup the new heads tomorrow. I deburred the gouged pistons, there was more than one after I cleaned all the gunk up. I am so glad I took the other head off, the water passages in the block were a solid brick of silt on that side. I tapped all the threads and am ready to go. The old heads are 049 casting, the new ones are3999241. I read that the 049 are great heads but not with flat top pistons. Is that right?
Here is another question. I have an unkown solid lifter cam. What lash measurement should I start at to find the sweet spot? I did a cross section search of marine cams on Summit with about 550 inch lift and found an average of (I).26/.28(E). Any tips and tricks?

Roadrunner, the profile pic looks familiar lol. Most good engines I have found will be happy to spend a little time on the phone giving you some good advice. And not the "bring it in to us so we can talk kind either". Give that a try also. Some of the ones I've talked to are even on these boards occasionally.

I hope you didn't use one of those brown roll lock discs to clean every thing :o just a heads up if you did flush as much as you can down and out of the motor, the dust they leave sucks for the bottom end. Guys at the GM dealer I worked at would use them when they would do an intake reseal and fire it up and 20-30 miles the motor was trash. They're made from aluminum oxide. Wish ya luck

Thank you for all the help everyone. I finished putting it back together at sunrise. We are now on our way to the river.
I put on new heads, Isky double springs, comp cams roller rockers, dart air gap intake. That one head bolt that was stripped, I thought it was ok after I chased the threads. I could only get 40 lbs out of it, I am just going to run it like that. I thought the enginge cover could fit the new intake, nope. Here is a video of the first fire up.
