Spark arrestors

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that if you have velocity stacks then your not required to have spark arrestors, is that true? What can you get messed with as far as all requirements on your boat?

It's my understanding that if you have an open engine compartment (no engine cover) you are not required to have spark arrestors.

While it can be argued that is not "required". If the boat is in coast guard controlled waters it can be enforced. Inland lakes, not so much.

They can always require it because there is no law saying they are "not required" but several saying they are.

Ca says if you have an open engine compartment AND if your scoop is backwards you don't have to run a spark arrestor.  Pretty much saying if it is set so the blowback is directed away from the occupants your okay.
If you can prove the stack is coast guard approved you got nothing to worry about if not then if they are trying to get you you may end up decreasing Ca debt.

I always wondered why people run the scoop toward the back

Too lazy to turn it around because it doesn't affect performance. If you tow with it forward it can fill your intake with fuel. Forward can also suck water in...
