Between race cars, boats and my old baja bug, I belonged to the burn of the month club.

An ex-GF's mom did the same thing 30 yrs ago. Her back still has 3 or 4 letters from the middle of the word Offenhauser clearly showing on one of her shoulders to this day. Come to think of it, she just kept drinking for the rest of the weekend too. It does get her a lot of comments tho...

year before last ,20 mins into a V-drive cam breakin (dry headers) I slipped off the fender pad while "goosing' the throttle and dropped my right bicep and underarm on the area just ahead of the collector , after I finished running the boat I went to Longs next door for meds the "Pharmy" took a look at me and said "are you in shock" The pain was intense and it took a month to heal (with a lot of care!) My landlord (a Doc) said the biggest concern with a third degree burn is Staff infection ... Tell her I feel her pain (sorry if the pics gross) Header burns are a bitch!

Yea Infection is a HUGE concern for that size and depth of burn she has there. If she hasnt been to the Dr. yet, I would highly suggest it. Like Tom said its gonna take a long time to heal properly, including dressing care and wound cleaning. I barely burnt my wrist on my first boat years back, and that hurt like a son' bitch. I cant imagine what that is feeling like.
-
yeah she went to the dr. those pics are like 2 weeks after it happen i think its a slow healer it doesnt hurt as bad she said but it itches like a mo fo now cuz its healing
-
Man I love headers, I really wanted to put a set on the Kona, but this is why I didn't. I can be carful and tell everyone in the boat to be careful, but accidents do happen. I hope your friend heals up ok.
-
Well said Kona I'm the same way, and I have kids in the boat alot too ;D

My wife is a RN and clinical cordinator for the burn center here in Fresno. I showed her the picture, without knowing the timing or details and she said that "the burn was 2nd degree partial thickness and it needs to be debrided (cleaned with soap and water, ouch!) The white area needs to be cleaned off, and if the tissue is pink, dressed with xeroform/bacitracin. If the tissue is white underneath, then a silver dressing would be necessary, and maybe even surgical debridement with grafting. It will take about 4 weeks to heal. If the tissue is anything but pink, it will scar. It's important to keep it clean and a dressing applied."
I don't know what doctor she went to, but it would be best to get care at a burn center. These burn wounds often require specialized care. Sorry for the delay in posting this--hope all turns out fine. If you have any questions, give me a call--I'll put in direct contact with my wife.
