Recent events, not only in my personal life, but professionally and dealing with these boat rebuilds has caused me to step back and really look at things from a 10,000 foot level. Much like I had to do as a regional sales manager.
Wanted to try something on you guys that I used to train my District and Store managers with, and something I had to remind myself about. I think this may be good for many people.
Anyone know how geese fly?

Geese are not the smartest critters, but I believe they fly like that because of the position of their eyes on their head. If their head is straight froward they cant see directly in front of them...so the > allows them to fly in each others peripheral vision...

Because there has to at least one goose taking up the rear to keep an eye on the rest of the losers and making sure to keep them in line :sly:

Alls I know is the trailing geese have got to catch a lot of Goose poop on the "googles" amoungst their "gaggles" ,must be important to be the head Goose :screwy:
BTW Aerodynamics! The lead goose is the strongest flyer, when he tires he falls back and the next goose takes the lead till he tires and so on. The rest of them are drafting, so to speak..

Geese are devoutly religious. In their goose religion, it has been handed down through the ages that "thou shalt not gaggleth in odd groups." Goose historians believe this to mean that the flock always has to have an even number of geese in it. Since they are in a > formation, one goose has to be point goose and that leaves an odd number to fill out the flanks. Therefore there will be more geese on one side than the other.

because the hunter could not reload fast enough and was only able to shoot one of the geese before they got out of range, now this could be avoided if he used a semi auto shotgun with the plug removed to allow for more shells to be loaded into said gun ;D

Actually JW hit it, (quicker than most, I might add) Theres more geese on one side. That simple, That is all that matters. The actual reason may well be aerodynamics or upwind/downwind. But who cares? Does it matter from 10, 000 feet? nope, lol.
I think in the long and short of it we are all guilty of over analyzing what is not important, that is the piont of todays exercize, lol.

Because there is an odd number. Sometimes there is an even number, and that goose gets voted out survivor style, and has to take a plane either north or south depending on the year. Sometimes they will just hook up with another band of geese so both are odd.

Maybe someone farted and more are flying on the upwind side to keep from getting gassed, who knows? More importantly, and I stress the point part, who CARES?, :screwy:

While I am admittedly one of the kings of over analyzing everything, I understand the point of not over analyzing what doesn't need to taken to that level of thought. The KISS principle truely does work. But, for those that said the V is longer on one side because there is an odd number of geese, rethink the problem one more time. They fly in a V which requires one goose to be the point goose. This point goose means if one leg is longer there is an even number of geese. And flying in a angled line or lines allow them to follow the lead goose without risking bumping into him if he slows down. It also allows them to remain closer to the lead goose, maintaining visual refrence, should they fly through poor visibility conditions such as clouds and rain.

If geese fly in a V formation and it was for aerodynamics... Why do Pelicans fly in single file lines? Seems much more beneficial for aerodynamics to me.
This one is a four star general in the Mexican Air Force, I asked him why but he wouldn't tell me...
