Where I live in vegas isnt a bad area, but im finding out its not too safe.
Here there are neighborhood style boxes where its one big mailbox with several small lock boxes for each resident. The 'outbound' mail slot has been blocked off from the inside. I asked the mailman why that is, and he said its due to people breaking into it.
So yesterday I walked out to check the mail and there was a big note on it saying the mailbox had been vandalized and a new one had been ordered and mail would not be delivered until it was replaced. I looked to the back access panel where the mailman access all the boxes, and someone had taken a crow bar to it.
Now I am on full alert....checkin out the window often and anytime i hear anything suspicious. I live here with my fiance and I work graveyard shifts....tonight is my first night back at work since the whole ordeal and im nervous as hell leaving her here alone. I talked to the lady across the street and she said someone had tried to break into her house when she was home alone a few months ago. Luckily the neighbor scared him off.
The neighborhood I live in has a major cross street that is home to a few nurserys where there are several illegals hanging out looking for day work. They often straggle down into the neighborhood going door to door asking for work. I dont even bother answering the door.
This didnt bother me at first, but as time has passed, I have seen cops out there with these illegals in handcuffs more times then i can count on both hands. I really commend them for cleaning up the streets.
I am also concerned about my boats and tools and stuff in the garage. You dont think about it, but theres thousands of dollars of parts, tools, etc in your garage....and theres not much other then a thin piece of sheet metal keeping people out. I am going to look into some security lighting and maybe some cameras.
I dont know, what do you guys think? am I letting this small event cause too much paranoia?

Hell no! My brother lives about 5 min from me and his shit was broken into the other day and they stole a few thousand dollars worth of construction tools. I would be paranoid too if I lived where you live!

Brad, Not to sould like a pussy but my biggest fear in life is someone in my house that doesnt belong. I had many sleepless nights hearing different noises and such outside. I had an alarm system installed in the house that goes off with any doors or windows that gets opened or broken. I sleep much better now. Worth the insall cost and monthly fee to me. Just give Jen a baseball bat and tell her to start swinging when in doubt.

I've lived in my house for 17 years and had one bicycle taken from the garage (door open) and one break in during the day by 4 high school kids. They stoled the TV, VCR, Nintendo, a telescope, and a polaroid camera. We got some of the stuff back, but it took a long time before I felt ok about leaving the house. Having the dogs around made it better.

Luckily I have never been broken into.(knock on wood). I feel safer when I'm not home and especially when I am home. I even live in a pretty safe neighborhood.

IMO in todays "climate" you can be to carefull, locks, chains etc , never paraniod Brad just prudent and proactive , BTW I'd go to MBE or UPS and get a PO box Tom

After thinking about this thread more I think people are just getting really desperate with the economy issues that are we are all dealing with. Its making people do stupid things.

Exactly right! As the economy takes a shit, B&E's, car theft, home invasions, they all go on a rise. Something you don't hear about on the news. I never had my wifes obituary put in papers here in Arizona for that very reason. Did in Ohio, but not here. Noone understood why. Think about it! 8) Seen that scenario too many times.
Sick focking theives out there, I'd rather not be explaining myself for shooting one of the idiots. But will if necessary.

My Bro in law whom I care very much for and respect used to "paint this picture" (when we went hunting and such) for me of a "futuristic" world of "socio-economic" collapse in America and I hated it ! It was kind of a combination of "Escape from New York" /Blade Runner and Soilent Green" rolled into one and I hope this is not the begining :mad: Tom

My dad paints the same picture Tom. He's still pissed at me for trading 2 revolvers for the Yellow Submarine! He forgets I own a LOT more guns than that, and didn't need them. His picture is a little more bleak tho. Kinda a cross between Orwell's 1984 and Clockwork Orange.

i remember 1984, had to read the damn thing three times in high school english..yeah failed 11 twice and 12 once. hehe. totally forgot when it was written but makes it seem even worse when you realize it was written in 1948. kind of remember Omega man but not really. beeen a long time since i seen that one.

Brad, its pretty cheap now a days to get a monitored alarm system. which helps deter some would be thiefs.
Camera's also are pretty cheap also and if your not familer in that area I can stear you in the right direction for a pretty inexpensive 4 camera system that I can set up for that you can view from work or anywhere else you have internet. Will also deter some would be thiefs.
Good locks are also helpful and deter some.
But what it all comes down to is - If someone wants in, there gonna get in! Just make the majority of the thiefs think twice.

ive been looking at some 4 night vision camera dvr systems for just under $400....a lot less then i thought it would be...comes with cables too
PM me some links on what you have....i dont got a ton of cash to blow though.
i also been lookin at some motion activated lighting as well.

I've always thought it was ironic that a man's most valuable possessions are kept in the least secured area of their home. There's some crazy cheap surveillance systems out there these days Brad. I remember seeing one at Costco over the holidays that included four cameras, a dvr and an in-dash LCD unit to monitor while you're on the road even, somewhere around $400-$500. Now that's being paranoid. I wouldn't blame you at all though. Don't know what kind of neighborhood you really live in, HOA's, etc... but there's some pretty nice looking, industrial strength roll-up doors now days too.
Speaking of vigilante movies... How's about "Boondock Saints" ??

yes, and the neighbors do have some lights that shine into my backyard as their dog wanders by......i dont mind it really.
and if i was to install any lights, i'd be sure to have them pointing in directions where they wont bother the neighbors ;)

i was subconciously ignoring the fact it was steering in that direction until you came in and derailed it
since it was brought up....yes, the economy sucks, yes, it drives people into desperate times to act on desperate measures.....blah blah blah.
what the fock should we do about it? buy enough guns to arm a small army and post up witty signs that say "nevermind the dog, beware of owner"? ....yeah, that will help me sleep at night. ::)

Anyone interested heres the shop right now (veiwed from home ) in my Lorex system, These are Sold out of Toronto and weve had very good luck and service , like other systems (I'm sure) you can remote accses and operate ,scan pan etc from just about anywhere hard drive records several weeks at a time has IR nite vision and sound as well Tom

These jackasses are oportunists. Harden the target and "most" of the time they will go to the next easy score. That being said: replace all screws in your door hinges, door striker plate and bolt plate with at lease three inch screws so they go into the studs. PUt up motioin senson or motion/heat sensor lights and tune them for people, not dogs/cats. Leave the outside lights on if possible. PUt dowels in the window sill. Dont leave ladders or shit around that can be used to smash a window. Deadbolt locks! Talk to your neighgors and agree to look out for their place if they will look out for yours. When any of you see stupid shit going on, call the cops. YOu would not believe how many people have seen their neighbers house broke into but did not call, 'cause they werent sure". The cops job is to check shit like that out. And lock your shit up! Lots of people get ripped off when they leave their cars, houses unlocked and stuff laying out in plain sight. Problem is, you can do all that, minimize your risk, and still sometimes get ripped off. So, mark your tools, take digital pics and save it, write down your serial numbers or add an owner applied number, and write it down. If you get ripped off, check out all the pawn/second hand shops within a mile. These bastards are also lazy opportunists and dont like to carry stuff too far to get the $ for their dope or whatever. There is a dirrect correlation to a rise in opportunistic crime and a bad economy, but it is ot always as bad as the media makes you think. Most people are not victims of crime. Some just draw the short straw or don't take basic steps to avoid risk. Just my two cents. DT

Funny you say that DTeem, When I lived in Ohio, a guy I knew had his camera jacked from his car (As well as his stereo, cd's, a bunch of other stuff). His insurance agent told him to check out the pawn shops for his sheit, as his camera, a rather expensive Minolta deal, wasn't covered. He did, after a couple of weeks, find his camera and bought it back. The jackasses left the film in and had taken pictures of themselves jacking other cars, among other things, in the Mall parking lot the same day, they found out after he had the pictures developed. ;D
