If President Present come out strongly in favor of one side or the other, this probably could have been scaled back a lot from our point of view.  Personally I think the Middle East countries should handle it, but they won't.   Sooner or later the radical muslims will fill the void that Gaddafi leaves.  He did keep a lid on radicals to a large extent operating in his country.
