Last year I got into boats in July. I have never been in rough water, like a storm etc., There are not a lot of jets out here in Colorado. The spring storms are wicked. It goes from party cloudy to high winds and monsoon rains in literally 15min. 30min later it's partly cloudy again. How do keep from sinking? How do you beach it safly. Are coves with high cliffs safe? What to do if I cannot get the boat on the trailer? Ohh Did I mention serious lightining? How to secure it to shore?

Interesting/good question it's usually a judgement call , if the waves are too large sometimes it's best to wait it out. As a rule if you go slow and keep the bow up you should be able to take some pretty good chop. Where/when you will be screwed is if you loose power. Make sure you have the ability to keep the carb dry in a downpour.

Get in a cove... use only an anchor and let the boat stay pointed in the wind. DO NOT beach it, the waves will come over the back and sink it.
If youre out in the middle keep the bow up by only using enough throttle to stay off plane and head into the wind. If you try to go against the wind the waves will break over the side and down you go.
How do I know all of this? Havasu weekends in my 19' Nordic. ;D

Something you can buy and keep on your boat, that doesnt take hardly any room at all and would make for a quick tie up to shore would be a sand spike, that has a slide hammer built in and a welded ring for a rope to tie to. They call em slide anchors.

I got caught in a couple of monsoons in Havascrew myself. This is exactly how you handle the rough water. My little 19 foot miller didn't like it but we were able to make it to the launch ramp and get her out of the water.
If I am out during monsoon season I just keep in mind that the weather can get terrible in a hurry. If it starts getting bad I usually pull the boat out of the water. I don't like flogging my baby too much.

Make sure your battery is well secured, it should not be able to move. Like some other folks said, keep the carb dry. Make sure your bilge pump works everytime you go out. There's a lot to look out for, but the battery is a big one. Without power you're pretty screwed. DO NOT TIE UP TO SHORE. find a cove with shelter..... Standard survival instinct applies.

How big an ancor? How to secure it to the front of the boat hook? Right now I have 4 rods and pistons from misc. old race motors. They seem to grip ok. What do other people use? This is helpfull thanx guys!!!

There are a bunch of different types of anchors. They work well for me, but you have to pay attention with them. If winds or currents change these things hold directionally so they're pulled out pretty easy and you'll have to reset them.
This one seems to be the most effective. i.e. All my friends with EXPENSIVE boats use these...

Rule of thumb for Jets, "When in doubt, throttle out"

From living at the river i get to talk to alot of boat people ;D and they sware by the box anchor for the river.
And if your at the lake it dont matter as long as its heavy enough, soooooooo...... i bet there is alot of Ford parts down there used as anchors >:D
