ok guys there is something i just dont understand. everyone is so against giving the car makers a loan. but not one person has said a damn thing about the 700 billion bailout of the banks. we give AIG 100 billion and they go out and treat the top people to retreats. yeah a little was said on that. we give Bank of America bailout money and what do they do slash 35000 jobs. now is it the top people who made this mess lossing their jobs. hell no it is the little poeple. forget what bank it was that was given like 25-35 billion in bailout money and what do they go and do with it they buy a bank from China. and yet because the car makers are asking for a loan everyone is bitching about that and about the unions. well yes the unions have some responsibility on this but the fact is the top dogs at all three companies are responsible. they are the ones to decide what to build,where to build it and how long to build it. are automakers wages higher then most yes. but what about these CEO`s of these companies and let not forget the banks who put us all in this mess. they make 10or 20 or 30 times what the average worker makes. why do they need to make 10-100 million dollars a yr. lets place the blame where it really belongs and that is on those at the top. they are willing to give themselves million dollar bonuses or raises but get upset and bitch if the workers ask for a 5% increase. now i dont think the automakers should be allowed to go under. most people dont realize what would be involved if they did. maybe one or two would survive bankruptcy. would you be willing to still buy from them. not nowing if they will be around. and what about the alternative.. the japanese companies. think they wont raise prices. you know they would. why no competition. who else you going to buy from. and lets not forget the others that wouuld be affected with them going out of business. all the parts suppliers and those that work for them and what about the trucking companies and those workers. the estimate is somewhere around 3 million jobs. so lets not just bash away on the automakers lets bash them all. the banks and those who run them started all this. just my .02 worth

The US Treasury is giving the Automakers the money they want out of the same $700B that the financial companies are getting it from...without Congressional approval! You guys want to see a 1920's recession....let em go B.K. and watch what happens when the muti-billion pension plans are gone! I kave no doubt that they have screwed up in the way they have ran the multi national, multi billion dollar companies...but when they go down they will take the WORLDS economy with it, reaching far oversees!

They need it, and the American People need them to have it!

You guys need to remember that it was Congress that told the US automakers to go spend BILLIONS on retooling for flex fuel and electric cars to "keep up" with the asioan car makers saying all along we will be there to support you! Then stood there with their thumbs up their ass's while the financial companies destroyed the US economy. Now knowone cane get a loan to buy these vehicles that Congress said to make!

And we are all mad at the automakers..................

GM is pinning all their hopes on the Volt, a plug-in hybrid vehicle. Guess what...the starting price is $40,000!!!

Honda is also releasing a new hybrid called the Insight, they will beat GM to market and it's starting price is under $20,000.

So with that being said I do understand we need to keep our big 3 up and running but let's be fair here, the big wigs will still continue to rake in the $$ and nothing will change. That is the problem. This bailout is a bandaid.

Trust me I'm all for American made but unless they pull their heads out of their booty we will continue on this downward spiral.

I vote for keeping roofs over peoples heads and food on their tables but this is getting ridiculous.

Some of these other countries have made it absolutly impossible to even bring an "american" car into another country . Yet our government whom is all for pocketing as much money as they can , lets any and all automakers have free reign (sp?) in the U.S. Maybe we should tariff the hell out of these other automakers like they do to us .

Facts are facts . I blame the hundreds of thousands of people who told prospective home owners that they could afford a house WAAAAAY out of there range because the house will be worth soooo much more later on and at that point they could refi to a more affordable home loan. Well , that day never came . Your mortgage company stopped getting payments . Therefore the much larger bank whom they barrowed money from wasnt getting money back either . Now jobs are being cut because smaller banks have to come up with money from somewhere to pay the bigger banks .

Ultimatly the larger banks (AIG , GM , Fannie/freddie) are unable to keep money circulating (aka "CREDIT"). Thats where the cutbacks begin . Money is not flowing .

In my eyes , I would like to find the people who pulled all the equity out of there houses and then stopped making payments because mortgage companies were lending 125% of the value of your home

That was the first nail in the coffin . Make no mistake about it GM , is a bank . If you guys want to let GM go down and kill off the unions . I'm all for it . Just dont get mad when we get into a fist fight over a loaf in the bread lines

The government has stepped in before to takeover and created an organization to sell off homes in the 80's and I think thats what we need to do . Lots of folks out there can still afford and want to buy homes but the banks in no way shape or form are going to lend with no money down (my case)

They should cut the parasidic dept off and let the Gubment reap the rewards of the resale and not let these companies deal with anything other than there buisness CARS !

A few years ago , when everyone was reaping the rewards of home sales , nobody was complaining about the unions and how much anyone was making . "Who gives a shit ! I'm bank rollin !" Now the banks have no money to move and it's pissing in everyones cherrios . Sorry guys , we shot ourselves in the foot .

Tough love would result in an overhauled Big3 that can start making products that are cost and quality competitive. Is there anything innovative on your boat that came out of Detroit engineering since 1970? I doubt it - the GOOD performance stuff is all non-Detroit, non-union good old American free market capitalism. Not pussy French chit. What kind of goodies do you think we'll be running down the road? Going BK (Chapter 11) is the best thing that could happen for these companies. It will force the unions to make necessary concessions to deal with reality. If Japan and Europe can make cars here for a company avg. of $49/hr why should we taxpayers fund companies that can only do it for $70/hr? Everyone builds cars that are sourced internationally, so why should taxpayers prolong the death of uncompetitive companies.
America used to make all the household products for the world. They don't cuz times change. You literally cannot buy an American made TV or most any other household appliance anymore. WHY? Because it is more efficient to build them somewhere else. History and Pride are why we continue to feel as though we need to help the car mfg's. Get over it, cause the unions have flushed pride down the crapper. They have forced all phases of working America into currently unsustainable positions economically, and they are unwilling to do what is necessary to remain competitive.
I realize this will be rough for a million workers, but either the company reorganizes and works their way out OR they just cease to exist. I am a member of one of the most powerful unions in the country, teachers, and I am fully expecting that my employer who currently pays over $600 towards my benefits, may no longer be able to do so. I already pay more than that in addition, and I guess I will have to dig a little deeper. I don't like it but I know the state is broke and unlike the USA, won't just print more money. The numbers are real, and thank God the Senate Republicans so far have stood strong against throwing money at GM and the others.
The real irony of the Auto Bailout is that the Dems are running everything in Govt. now and into the future, and the faithful unions are giving them the big middle finger.

So how come American companies are not making TV's somewhere cheaper? Taxpayer should pay to keep uncompetitive companies afloat when Toyota, Nissan, MB, Volks can all make cars in the USA 30 percent cheaper? Where is the incentive for GM to change? And when?

And if I were a CEO that had make tens of millions of dollars each of the previous 8 or 10 years, yeah I could give up my salary for a while (especially knowing I had a contract that was gonna give me more millions when I leave). Here's an idea -- every executive making more than 200K/yr volunteer to work for what the entry level guys are making until things turn around. You have run the largest company in the world into the ground, how about sincerely showing you understand that EVERYONE is gonna have to sacrifice a lot if this is gonna turn around. The sad thing is that even that would be a drop in the bucket. There aren't enuf of them to matter. It is the retirement pkgs that have been promised to past and current workers that is reallly killing GM.

Welcome to the jungle baby. Just cuz they make cars, doesn't mean they have a right to stay in business.

most of those workers should be and would be making 20000 - 30000 in any other field! the unions have bloated pensions and benefit packages for otherwise unskilled employees!

I have an easy solution for that Boyer . Why dont the government use the military for Police/firefighter duties . That'll put some vets ina good position when they get home and not to mention a bump in pay .

Once again , if the government would step in and set a standard of living , quality , and education of workers across the board , there wouldnt be a need for a union . Do you really think these foriegn companies want to pay what they are paying . NOPE ! I guarantee you when the standard goes , everything goes . Dont see anyone else betting the livelyhood on it .

ok so if they union people should be making what they are worth. then are you going to sit there and tell me that these CEO`s of these banks getting bailouts deserve what they make. come on. they make 10-20 times and more what they pay an a worker. sure ok they have more responsibility but aren`t they the ones who put us in this position. no money due to them making stupid decisions, they get a government bailout, they buy new banks from china, they lay off people. mean while everyone is sitting here putting down the unions for trying to get decent wages for people. now before everyone jumps me i have been on both sides of the fence. i have worked union and i have worked non union. these people making 10 million up to 100 million and more a year are the ones who put us in the current position,yet nothing is being asked of them to give up wages or salaries. and yet i believe it was Glasscutter who said if i made 10 million a yr for the past 8-10 yrs i could give up my salary for a yr or so. well how about we do this. we make all the CEO`s and upper management make what they pay their workers. does anyone think that will happen.. hell no it wont. but isnt that what we are asking even demanding the auto companies and workers do. why isnt any of this being pushed on the CEO`s of these banks that are getting a hand out. is anyone pushing for the same conditions as the auto companies. no. why because they have better and bigger lobbiest to push and pay people not to ask these questions. hell i didnt agree with the bank bailout. now we are talking about bailing the dumb ass people who bought to big or to much a house and cant afford it out. but yet nothing is being said about that or the fact that they should loose their house or go bankrupt with it. and yes detroit has had their heads up their asses as far as what needs to be done. but the same can be said for the rest of them. when everyone was making money it was fine and dandy and everything is good. well it was only a matter of time before it all caught up to us. and it finally has and it is a big slam on the brakes. we will recover but it is going to be a tough one.
so lets not bash just one entity but lets again put the blame where it really belongs and that is on the CEO`s of these banks that put us in this mess due to their greed and selfishness.

And the CEO's of some of the banks that were bailed out were forced to repay the money and give up what they had coming.

When the automakers receive the money most of the execs will be out on their ass also along with their fat paychecks....

A "fair" wage isnt 60k-80k plus benifits for putting a bolt in a hole and torqing it when military thru cops, firefighters, paramedics, and teachers are barely breaking 40k a year if they are lucky!
