Gold never really "makes money".
Your "best bets" in my opinion are IRA accounts, bonds and CD's.
Gold is an unknown, meaning what makes the value fluctuate is the value of the all mighty (maybe at some point) dollar and the global economy.
That being said, the global economy is not great and personally about to take a crap. But the dollar is fairly strong when compared to other currencies. This makes gold high (a little high) right now.
By investing in gold right now, I feel you won't lose anything and the only way you could come out a little ahead would be if the dollar crashes and the global economy makes a major downward trend for the long term.
I don't think you can get hurt, but I also feel you could do much better with an IRA market account.
No matter what you do, diversify, never rely on one particular investment.
I don't have a lot of time right now, but I've looked into it pretty far. I own a bunch of silver (inherited), and it hasn't moved in decades.
I'll try to circle back later.
