A couple years ago there was one of these boats for sale in Winchester, Ca. I was really digging the look of it but had no where to store it and was intimidated on how much it would take to restore. I think this may go on the bucket list prior to an early Chris Craft....

that is one giant tahiti... is that a splash of some other hull out there like most of the tahiti's?

Here is some info about it....

The Vogel's Tahiti was named after the Disney movie, "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride", but the name kind of stuck with the boat model since it wasn't the prettiest boat around but an exceptional rough water performer. And yes, Jake and Jerry Gilbreath did race a 22 Tahiti Toad in POPBRA races for about a year. It was mid 1970s during a Rum Run (Long Beach up to Malibu and back, 112 miles) when they saved my a_ _. I was racing my 24 Schiada v-drive on the return leg of the race when the motor grenaded just off of El Segundo. Normally this wouldn't have been a problem except there was a strong on-shore wind blowing that aftrenoon plus really large ground swells. When the motor blew, I went to the safety bag and got out a couple of anchors and tossed them in but they wouldn't hold because of the ground swells. I was dragging anchors and drfiting towards shore and pretty close to the surf line. I had called to race control on the radio for assistance but the nearest available rescue boat was about 9 miles away (15 to 20 minutes). I was getting close enough to the breakers that I had the inflatable life raft ready and on the deck. Fortunately, Jake and Jerry were coming by in the Tahiti and saw me waving them down. They drove in to shore, hooked on a tow line and pulled us out to deep water where the anchors would hold. They went back to racing and finally a rescue boat showed up and towed us in to the ramp at Marina del Rey. Definitely an appreciated act of exceptional sportsmanship. And Jerry did start his marine rigging business with the 19 Spectra -- later he added air slots to the bottom, making it a Mod VP style -- a very successful boat at places like the Parker Enduro and Lake Havasu Outboard World Championships with Greg Foster at the wheel. The Del Taco tie-in was a family thing. Jerry married Brian Ewald's (well known Orthopedic surgeon in Orange County -- raced a 20' vee-bottom Sanger v-drive called "El-Cid" in marathons and offshore) ex-wife. It was Jerry's step-daughter from that marriage who wound up marrying Brad Miller who was the owner/founder of Del Taco and also owned the very popular country western restaurant/Night Club in Santa Ana, The Crazy Horse. Brad was also an avid boat racer, owner of the Grand National boat, Crazy Horse, which Jerry often drove. And you are correct, Jack Oxley was most famous for racing Stylecraft cats (with McCulloch/Scott outboards) which were built in Long Beach by Earl and June Palmer. Both Earl and June raced offshore for awhile, but in their small 18' vee-bottom outboard runabout model. Again -- sorry -- way too much information Two Cents (Bob) !

I wish I never got rid of it .It had a 2x6 running down the center keel it was built like a Sherman tank .If I had the money to restore it properly I would buy it in a heartbeat it's one sexy beast!
