Title: SCJB Videos Questions
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on June 24, 2014, 10:09:12 AM
How do you guys think I should proceed on the next round of SCJB Videos?

Should I put them online like I have in the past, then compile them onto a DVD which would be released at the end of the year?

Or...

Should I make them and only release them on DVD at the end of the year?

Well seeing as scjb has a racing jet boat to sponsor I think you'll have to release them on dvd first and I hate to say that because I love your videos,  it's actually what made me buy a jet boat ! Lol

Same here... I love watching them, maybe just a 30-45second video per meet you can release before the video release

Not going to lie! I've probably watched all the videos you have online now, 20 times each.  :screwy: Been itching for the next installment. They help me cope with the long weeks between trips!  :banghead:

I think the end of the year is a good idea. That way everyone has to go to the events rather then just waiting them on video..

I'm gonna share my thoughts here but first I should mention that I'm new here, I know nothing about nothing when it comes to either jet boats or owning a website but I too love the videos as they are what really pushed me over the edge on taking the plunge on a jet boat.

I think your videos are awesome. Most of us don't go to the river as much as we'd like but your videos do a good job of recreating the good feelings we get while we're there. As far as content on a website, videos are arguably the best. Better than pictures, articles, even the forum, although those things are all still important. Videos are pure indulgence as opposed to laboring through a long article with a handful of pictures sprinkled in.

I'm not exactly sure how income in generated through websites but I'd wager that the bulk of it comes from advertising. I'm assuming now but it seems that the higher the traffic draw to your site, the higher you charge for advertising. My fear is that charging for videos could cause multiple side effects. Likely only your very dedicated followers would purchase the DVD but you would be taking away amazing free content from the site and possibly reduce traffic. I have to preface this next statement with "I listen to a lot of KFI", but I heard that the porn industry is having trouble making money like they once did because there is so much free porn available so people are not paying their membership fees. I'd be afraid that people would either find it for free or just go elsewhere.

I'm not sure how many of you guys are fisherman but I'm sure some of you are familiar with Bloody Decks. I think those guys have done a great job building a business around a website that does essentially what yours does. It provides "fishing, boating, fill in the blank" enthusiast with a place to discuss their hobby and gives them content that gets them excited about their hobby in order to generate traffic and sell ads. If you go to their site you'll see the main page that has regularly updated free content, a great forum and tons of ads. A lot of their content is actually generated by their users which they just link to on the main page and the possibility of getting on the main page gives the posters added motivation to produce awesome content (which is usually just trip reports with tons of pictures).

Again I'm just a knucklehead electrician but I think you've provided all of us with a great service that helps us all get through life when it get monotonous and I hope to see you rewarded financially. I can't imagine how many hours you put into just the video editing, let alone having the discipline to get footage on every trip. But it seems that the direct monetary gains from selling DVD's could be significantly less than the indirect gains of putting up free videos, which generates more traffic and allows you to sell more ads and makes you a shit load of money so you don't have to work any more and you can pay someone to video you winning a bunch of races which gives you more content, more traffic, more money, badder ass boat.....

I'm probably talking out my ass and like I said, I have no idea about the struggles that you've gone through to build an awesome site but I'd be happy to support either way. You're the genius behind SCJB and I'm sure you'll be successful either way.

Thats a long time to wait, until the end
of the year if you don't get to make the
events.
We have and will continue to buy the dvd's just because of the cool factor
and it's really nice to have them all on
disc in one place.
We purchase shirts, decals, hats and
koozies and whatever else Brad can
get produced and will support the website anytime we can.

How about some SCJB beach towels
Brad ?  Maybe in red, black, blue and
white with the SCJB skull and lettering
I think they would sell. We could pay
up front so you don't have to carry everything until they do. Just a thought

Anyhows, thanks for everything you do
for all of us. These SCJB events are
awesome get togethers, and we've
made so many great friends attending
them !  OK, that's enough sucking up now I'm going back to screwing with everybody.   LMAO !

i think it comes down to what are you trying to accomplish with the DVD's?  You either want to generate revenue for the site to cover costs or venture into other areas... or reinvest into making that next video better, quad copters, better equipment, etc... OR you should use the films to promote the site and drive more traffic to the site for more paid advertising and a larger user base.

Realistically how many DVD's are you selling?  Is it even worth the overhead of creating the DVD's, jackets, etc?  I personally dont even have a DVD player anymore, I stream.  Perhaps toss em into itunes and youtube movies for digital sales?

My opinion would be to create short 3-5 min teaser videos of each event, etc... release them FREQUENTLY.  Get tons of views, promote it using your facebook SCJB account, get people in the forum talking about it, excited for more meets, etc.  Then release a year end video for purchase with full event coverage, maybe some product advertising and review, etc.  Showcase a particular build, put a gopro on someone racing to cover the sport and promote the racing aspect of the site...  i know you recently posted that your boat was down and out, maybe this is a good way to keep your interest in the sport and help promote it?

I personally really enjoy your videos, I think you have some awesome creativity and its cool to see how far you've progressed from a simple video, to a gopro on a stick, to quad coptering, etc. Not to mention your ability to edit them all together as well.

I don't care as long as you continue to make them and they are affordable. At $15.00, that's like a SINGLE movie ticket, but,..... I get to rewind and watch it over and over again, and stop it at the good parts, and all the while being able to pause it to go grab another beer....try that at the movie theater.
Seeing them in "spurts" here and there on YouTube, just isn't the same as owning it and watching it in stereo, on the big screen at home!!

I like the idea of short teaser videos to get us through the year and help promote the DVD and the site!

If you take some of the video from each event and put out several 3-5 minute "shorts" to create interest throughout the season, then let everyone know that the videos will contain more unseen footage from the gatherings, I think it would give everyone something to enjoy.

These are all the answers I was looking for and it backs the ideas I have in place.

I am going off the grid for the next 6 days camping in Idaho at a place where theres apparently no internet or cell service, which brings a lot of 'thinking time'. Big ideas, just need to get them out on paper and piece them together.

Thanks everyone for the input on this.
