Title: Shoulda stayed home!
Post by: sandaddict on June 03, 2007, 08:25:57 PM
Went to Elsinore this morning to do a little tunnin. everything else aside it was a great day for the lake...  but its the everything else that got me. :'( took off after we launched to play with the carb a little. bought a quick change kit for the vac. secondaries and played with that a bit but it didnt seem to cange anything. only gettin 2900rpm when im standin on it, WTF! 47 mph max!! this is bull shit. got some popin at the top end range too. but the bottom end is way better. so i said screw it lets have a couple cocktails ;D ill deal with it later. take off about 3:00pm headin home and about 3 miles down the freeway my engine cover blowes open!!  flips all the way over punches a hole in my scoop, ripes out a hinge, and bends the cables to both my fwd/rvrs and my diverter. now there both junk. goin to the river in three weeks now i got this to fix and my carb problem is wors than when i started...    I just should have stayed home. but at least i didnt lose the cover on the freeway so its all repairable ;D

sorry to hear about your boat. but just get it fixed and enjoy the rest of your summer. i have already sunk my boat been threw 4 carbs 5 starters and that is just a handfull of my problems.. it will all work out

later

This one looks like you should repair it anyways . This is how you DONT anchor screws to fiberglass.

yeah i wish the guy i bought it from would have put the hinges on the inside anyway. it would look much cleaner. maybe this is the perfect opportunity to change it. but how do i fill those holes.  the rest of the crap i can fix but the performance problem is really pissin me off! >:D

I would check the entire fuel system . Remove and check carefully all your fuel lines , tanks , tubes that come out of the tanks , fuel pump , everything ! I took a carb apart once , bowls , metering blocks , main body and soaked them in a can of "Barrymans " chemical solution for 15 min . Removed them and hosed it off with water . Put on a face sheild or at least some safty glasses and use an air compressor to blow out all the crevises and cracks and passageways . Assuming the carb is set up properly mine worked like brand new .

If that dont work . Me and my crew chief will get it running in one trip out to the lake .  ;) For a small fee of course . A couple boat sodas should cover that though . ;)

It's either fuel filter or timing. It has to be.

i would bet it is fuel as well. i was having a similuar problem. and it was all the gunk in my side tanks. i still have to clean my filters almost every time i take out the boat.

i might take you up on that if nothing else works. but i have a few things to go over first. and then ill drag beerjet to the lake and see what he says. guess ill hit the garage and see what i can see huh!?

filters were dirty so i changed those. noticed the gasket between the baseplate and the body on the carb was too small for the butterfly bore so i have to trim that so the secondaries wont catch on it. and the timing is at 8 deg. with the vacume advance disconnected but when i hook it back up it jumps up to 16 deg. is that normal or should i back it down with the advance on? ???

If you have a base gasket that is too small for the bores, chances are real good it has the wrong holes for the vacuum passages too. I have quite a few spares and you're welcome to match up what you need. I'm in Anaheim, so it's not that bad of a drive.

I have disconnected the vacuum advance on my boats. Actually with the Proform body, there's no provision for the ported vacuum channel. Anyhow, you must be taking the vacuum from a manifold source to have it advance at idle like that. I would disconnect the vacuum advance, check your total advance, and recurve your distributor if needed. The 460 is set at 38*, but it's a relatively low compression engine and likes advance. Yours may be different. Since jets tax an engine the opposite of a car, you set the total advance, and the inital is what it is (as long as there are no cranking problems).
In a nutshell.....

ill disconnect my vac adv. but how do i set the total timing on my 454. its also supposed to be a low compression engine.

Mines at 38 and really likes it there .

You use a dial back timing light. First, hook up the light and slowly rev your engine watching the timing advance. Typically, you want all your advance in by 3000 rpm. What you are watching is the mechanical advance in the distributor. Start out conservative... Chevy owners will have a better idea what may work on your combination, but I would think 32* total in at 3000 rpm is a mild tune. The marks on your dampener don't go that high, that's why you need a dial back timing light. Set the dial at 32*, run the engine up to where the advance stops, then advance or retard the distributor until the strobe is at the zero mark. Take it out and run it. If you have a GPS, that'll help you, but if not, watch your tach at WFO. Bump the advance a degree or two and take it again. Did you pick any more rpm at wide open throttle? If so, bump a hair more and retest looking for more rpm. Run as little advance as you can to give you max rpm to lessen your chances of detonation.

Hell, bring it out to the Shack in Bullhead this weekend and get it dialed in

Put an 850 double pumper on it and use the vac sec carb as a tire chaulk.

wish i could go to bull head this weekend. unfotunately i didnt work all last week so im broke as a joke this weekend. as for the double pumper... few more tries with this one and its an anchor! >:D

well i found out who ever put the tach in didnt set the switches right on the back so the rpm was off >:( so i fixed that and ran it against a digital timing light to make sure. so now the timming. it was set at 8* at idle and about 22* at full adv. now i have it at 14* at idle and 32* at full advance. im scared to go any more. dont wanna detonate it. still sounds good and no trouble at all starting it. it lights off real quick. does this sound about right and is it a good place to start? ???

It'll be a different boat! Don't be OVERLY paranoid about detonation... you probably have a couiple degrees left in it, but if you like it, run with it.

went to Elsinore on sunday to test the boat after all the tunin advice you guys gave me. damn what a differance. little choppy out there but when i found a couple of sweet spots and stood on it, we took off. i was surprised at the change. i wanna try some more timing but im going to Havasu this weekend and it runs great so ill leave well enough alone untill i get back. ;D

Looks like roost really knows his shit  ;D Glad everything worked out great . From my experience , if it has too much timing it'll just start running like shit . Falling on its face sooner that it would if the timing was right on . I'd keep goin 1 or 2* at a time . I'm gonna guess 36* - 38* is where it'll run best I think . Stock heads seem to like alot of timing . If you keep having all these great days at the lake , your gonna have to start a new thread .  :P  ;D

BTW , How'd the Mrs. like it ?

It's very cool that you're happy with it now. Nothing's worse than being frustrated with a boat and not being able to make it do what you know it's capable of. I have one of those now  :-\ It's going back out to the Shack this weekend for more testing, so if you're in the Bullhead area, just look for the funny looking slow jet with the blinding gold metalflake.
BTW, what rpm were you turning before, and how many now?
Keep in mind that adding more advance will not have the dramatic effect you've just felt. It may only give you a mile or two per hour (MAYBE). There are other tricks to get a little more out of it without busting the budget, but hey, it's only money.  ;D
