so i finally got off my ass to go mess with the cruiser...i have played with a few thinks and got a "feeling " what was wrong with the motor so i thought.....RECAP------> last trip out at temple bar with the group..my boat broke down sunday durring a afternoon put back to the marina to go home.....just shut off on me in the middle of the friggggggen lake all of a sudden??? had 50 lbs oil pressure...temp at 110 or so...one fuel tank was low 1/8 of tank, rt tank had 1/3 of a tank...so i though it cut off from no fuel...i just switch over tank manually to fuller tank....after switching over tank @ valve tried to restart and nothing .....heavy click! click!...so im thinking what the f*ck????? looks at fuel pressure...da?? still had 3lbs? ok well its not fuel............must be voltage....switch battery switch to all....click! click!....f*ck.....ok bitch ill add the booster box........click click!!!!....fu*ck....ok maybe its "low"..get out jumper cables....jump battery one to battery two,battery switch to all AND booster box...better start bitch...im in the middle of lake mead...NO BODY AROUND....my buddy way ahead of me..(hope he comes back).......click! click! click!....thinking damn starter or solenoid..friend comes back tows my ass in ...took forever, but at least i wasnt paddling to know where...........
and back to present day....i borrowed a ford solenoid from a local boater( cause i aint got a friggggen job yet)..and it sat on my desk for a few days i go out to try a few things....check voltage..12.34 both batterys ok there..swapout solenoid check cables.....slowly turns over and click! click!..thinking ok starter is shot....take off exhaust log, remove starter...before i leave ..i figured i would check spark plugs to see if any were rusted in the cylinders..take off #1 and break off the tip from loose socket..ok ill buy a new one when i test the starter..take it in to get tested...looks ugly and rusty but what the hell we will check it..test passes store says its good..no worries just lube the shaft and reinstall it..looks up my waranty on my solenoid i bought last summer ...still under warranty...go figure???... toook starter home and went to grab old solenoid to replace ...figured il check other plugs...(bought new socket).all look good except # 7 its fucked

go back to store tell the guy upgrade me to heavy duty solenoid and give me a new starter...cant trust this starter on the lake..and bought a second sparkplug for the smashed one...small thought in back of head...where did the pieces go...hopefully out the exhausthmmmmm????...back to starter problem reinstall new starter....but before i install exhaust..ill see if it cranks...crank ,crank,crank,crank....click...click!! come on......so i go to remove all plugs to help turn over motor and back to # 7 a new plug and its fucked tooo(see shinny new broken ass plug)....right now im so pissed cause i just spent 75 i didnt have and some thing is smashing my plugs..got a sick feeling in my stomach...damn motor is f*cken broken...now all symptoms are falling into my head....motor shut off wont crankhmmmmmmmm i manually turn over motor now its is dark grab flash light look into plug hole as best i can and piston is all messed up in there....went to try to turn over moter again by hand and its locked up.....i think the piston is in pieces..........im so pissed the only thing that gives me pleasure is my boat....i dont even like showing my civic any more its not fun anymore...now my cruiser's motor is toast and im broke....no job no money....that just sucks..im still feeling sick, i cant stand it.....soorrrry for the long post but had to vent on you guys...i know most of you have beeen there before.....F*ck !! :banghead:

Hold on there turboshorts, no need to go pulling the engine out, yet, pull the top end and see what you can see, then if it's warranted pull the fucker out and see what's what.

Could very well be, and makes sense with all the info. Hopefully only a dropped valve, but I agree with Glenn, because of the rusty plug. With luck the block is OK.
Dun matter either way, Chromey's out of commission. Get a good look at it with Skip and then figure what you need. I got a spare block if it is damaged as well. Rusty, (Sat outside in the Saguaro from the PO) but should be fine with a good hot tank and machining. (I'll get it done if it comes to that).
Get on it man! See what you need! You got the time, we can gather the parts.

Weird, kinda hard to fill one cylinder while it's running, no? Not enough damage fro a dropped valve, beat marks are small on the plug. Now a screw down the carb......

Maybe plug came apart and parts from the old plug beat up the new one? Got enough in there to seize the motor, do fords have a tight quinch area?

my civic is a 1997 hatchback edelbrock turbocharged fully built motor about 200 hp w/ turbo and about another 100 on squeez. fully chromed motor and suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes, complete audio and video system, ps2 and a ps-one w/ monitor. 2/ 15 dvc subs ..its really loud in there..3 stage paint w/ violet pearl, grey pinstriped flames... nice looking and great running car all around and she is for sale at a steal!! 10,500.00 firm

and oh boy she is done as expected..had a little hope she wasnt as done as she is now but that hope only went so far.....please see pictures....and have a chuckle on my part feel free...its all good.....

well...i have insurance on my cruiser through state farm.....motor not covered from mechanical breakdown...only from impact or damage caused by a faulty part or ...faulty part not covered either.sooo...i need to find a local shop to drop of boat and say motor broken from "water" damage or something an st farm should cover the damage minus my deductable.......now just got to find a shop?

The last time I saw a crack like that was when my buddy broke a 289 Ford. It dropped a valve in one cylinder, but when we disassembled it the head of the valve had bounced through the single plain intake and into the intake port on the other side of the engine. :screwy:
It gets exciting when things start breaking inside an engine ;D

Dunno, but the block is toast. I got a block for ya, gonna need tanked and machined, but it's yours.
Can't help with a crank or pistons just now, got Legal entanglements lol.

I wish i still had the stock 460 rotating assembly I had after I sold my project, but that went not to long ago.

I think you may get away with surfacing that head and putting a new seat and one or two valves in it. Ray has a block, if yer pistons are other wiese good bore to your pistons with a new one in that hole rods prolly good. Rings, bearings and gaskets...good to go on the cheap cheap. I'd like to see what all is accumulated in the block, I think it was a heat problem.

seeing the head in person it is fugly in that compression chamber...however i have been wrong before...i have seen them welded up, but looking like swiss cheese i just dont know...

Does it have "pits" or just "shadows"?
When I checked if from the bottom (you can only see 1/3 of the cylinder wall) there were just some shadows where water has stained the walls...if you can feel them, then obviously they should be addressed, if not, I would let it roll...I guess pics would help.....

WELL I DECIDED...after a few texts from my peers...lol to reassemble the new used motor and run it! spent all day today reassembling and cleaning up the block, retapping all the threads, flushing out ALL THE SAND from the water ports and cleanning up the heads...transfered over my timing chain and oil pump and all new gaskets......i plan on being on the water next weekend in topac...so wish me luck!

Years ago, i brought an engine to our machine shop and asked about the "pitted" cylinder walls.. I was told run it... And last time i checked it was still on the water running..
Was also told pitted walls is a common thing with marine use, i took that as un maintained use.... ???

Why you need a timing light, LOL! Still never put one on mine, used my basic setup routine, adjusted a little by seat of the pants, running fine! (Pm me and I'll give you my routine on the Fords, posted it here a couple times, lord knows where, but the BBF will fire and idle EVERY time!) Problem being so many different balancers, etc, etc, etc. makes a timing light sometimes unuseable. Let alone sometimes chasing the lines around on a worn out balancer.

well i got started on it a little late last night went in aout 11pm didnt want to piss off the neighbors or wake up my kid.......only carb and exhaust left to install, already got oil pressure came up to 45lbs after the 3rd or 4th crank also did a compression test and it wasnt pretty, but after the motor fires up im sure the valves will start seating hopefully.....so tonight then!!

Go to the nearest part store and grab a cheap 5 psi electric fuel pump for $25.

Hey i made this very error in the past could not figure out why it would not build pressure well it was in the rtanks as I was pumping them full of air :banghead:

well after a little "rotor" adjustment...lol she fired up just fine...needs to be timed though......but so far no oil or water leaks....just a small exhaust leak comming from a small dime sized freeze plug in the head on the drivers side ....epoxy to the rescue!
im hoping to go out to the lake saturday to test it and see how she runs......thanks all for your help and encouragement!

was it the top end or bottom end? what did it do before it went? how long did it run before it let go? is it just knocking or did it punch a hole out the side or pan?
give us some details.

to elaborate a little this is what chromey told me on the water! when he shut down when i pulled up to him he said its done! so i asked did you lose oil pressure? he said yes...then i heard clunky noises and she shut down! when on the ramp chromey said he tried to refire it and it wont even turn over...my guys spun bearing and something came apart!

Sounds to me like oiling system / clearance issues may have been the culpret :-\

Having thrown more than my share of junkyard motors into old sleds and jalopies, I can almost assure you that motor would still be together had it never come apart. Stuffed a 283 SBC bored .080 over, about 150K miles, sat in a garage for 3 years into my 31 coupe, promptly put about 15K miles on it before I sold it, it's still in the car, still running fine. Hope anyone that is looking at junkyard/used engines learns from this...

Stuffed a 283 SBC bored .080 over, about 150K miles, sat in a garage for 3 years into my 31 coupe, promptly put about 15K miles on it before I sold it, it's still in the car, still running fine. Hope anyone that is looking at junkyard/used engines learns from this...

I think if he didnt hurt the block this time we have enough shit to build him an engine. If we take this block (STD) and his old pistons (.040), still have major oil groves on the skirts, buy one new piston and bore the block to them.

Ok, Chromey, Glenn, Brad, Skip you guys know I have a complete turnkey engine in Mercel? I think. Can we get it to Chromey? (STILL haven't gotten it down here. He's welcome to it if it gets him in the water again quick. (Where is that engine again Jeremy? I forget, and too damn tired to look it up right now).
Complete as complete gets, 10 qt pan, logs, water hookups, alt, starter, bellhousings, dizzy, no carb, but even the 3 pt mounts.
We can work something out later. I'm sure that with all the leftover parts theres a decent engine in there for the Saguaro, which is what this was for.

thanks guys.....looks like im going to be out untill next season maybe....hey she ran turn key for about two years with no worries so.....im going to take my time on he rebuild and make it stout! thanks again everyone...got nothing but kind words to everybody here, just how it goes in the boating world!

well...so after i timed it in the drive way on saturday on the hose, it was running great 70-75 lbs of oilpressure temp was good, smooth revving...even when i got it in the lake let it run on the trailer for about 10 mins all checked out good....loaded everybody up..there was 6 of us and the dog...pulled out of the no wake excellerated a bit on plane to about 30 really easy for about 10 minuates and i started to here noises comming from the motor and oil pressure dropped to 40psiand started to warm up a bit, i had the water valve turned full open, sounded like a loose rocker on the right side or some kind of nocking.....drove it easy to the cove where terry and nordie, and 454nordic were hanging out....just felt disappointed limping the boat in, was really hoping it had ran well to get me through the rest of the season....hung out for about 2 hours let it cool down, good sized oil leak floating in the bildge, hadnt leaked at home???....it was still pretty warm when i took off the valve cover to check the rockers all were tight and no popped out pushrods.....borrowed a quart of oil and put it in before we left ...took off drove for about 5 mins and motor started knocking pretty good and less than 20 psi oilpressure...and shut off....nordie cruised by i told him the motor was done! he went and got 454 nordic(brandon) to tow me back in to the launchramp.....so im back to square one! but hopefully i got a good block to start with and we will just have to see what happens next, got to save up lots for the next build.......thats all i can do! thanks again brandon for the tow! and the oil

so it doesn't sound too bad :-\ maybe you can save the crank and re-size the rods, because they got hot. you will only know when you tear her down

ive been there and watched others go through the used engine thing :'( it was mostly frustrating for me >:( just get back at it cuz it aint gunna fix it'self

NO, but he can take his old rotating assy (.040) buy one new piston bore the new block (STD) to the pistons. I looked at the skirts and they look really good. The whole rotating assy looks fairly fresh other than the whole in the block and broken piston.......and valve

OK, get the head off that bad cylinder and see if it's gonna be ok. Then get the pistons out of the old block and see if they're gonna be ok. Buy one piston like what you have, about 12-13 bux. Send the block out to be bored to your pistons. You wont need any money till it's done. Then you'll need rings, bearings and gaskets and I'll come over or bring it over and I'll put it together. Could be done inna week for around 2-300

I have 8 standard pistons on rods! There yours if you want them , that way you dont have to bore the block .040 over.
