Title: So new
Post by: Boatwidow on October 01, 2007, 04:38:19 PM
we still have that new car smell.

But we have an old boat.Bought in July 2007.

73 Sleekcraft Rebel. Olds 455. New Bigs custom carb (purple...husband let me chose), fuel pump, some fancy $400 distributor....yada, yada, yada We had a bunch of work done at Blair Speedshop in Pasadena.

and today....towed off Castaic for the SECOND time. The lifeguards know our names.LOL

WTF now!

Anyway my husband won't let me post a picture of the whole boat cuz he's convinced someone will recognize it and laugh at us. I just got a teaser pic as he dragged
it back off to the shop.

I advised him to consult with the "Jet Boat Gods" here. We bow to your superior knowlege.

We will certainly be picking your brains, but not your....nevermind...

Thanks!

how about some more info......what did it do when it decided to not run? sputter? just died? let us know what Blair's tells you and maybe we can steer you in the right direction. As tom says...Its no fun when your toys dont run.

Also, there will be no laughing at boats....unless it has a caddy emblem on the bow and an office chair "for the bitches" (i will explain later)

the dist and carb look pretty....i would like to see more of the boat!

I was towing the old man. Water was like glass, so smooth. Then she just up and quit. No warning, no nada.
Then she wouldn't turn over.

Blairs says coil.

O.K.....we now have a new coil.

I will a "full body" shot later.

And thanks for the welcome.

Did the coil fix it? Not sure what a bad igniton coil would have to do with the engine not turning over...  ???

Stalling and Not turning over sounds more like a ground issue.  Or an engine seizure :o  If it still turned over and wouldn't fire coil might be the problem (that was one of issues)  We need more details ;)

Maybe the battery came disconnected. Or the ground came loose.

When I got Mine there was a fuse under the dash that went to the key, it was corroded and would do the same thing !!  Check for fuses under the dash or by the battery.

Oh, I almost forgot, welcome to the site ;D.

Yeah, thanks guys,

My husband said I used the wrong "phrasiology."

And I quote, ahem ,"No you are wrong. The boat would turn over, it just wouldn't start."

Whats the difference. We were still floating like a raft.

Our kids think its great to get towed in by the lifeguard. Meanwhile, my husband and I are hiding on the floor.

According to Blairs. They checked for fuses & did other electrical troubleshooting and it came down to the coil.

We'll see. Or maybe you'll see us, getting towed off again.

Please feel free to wave.

I think I have just edged out the number times I got towed vs made it back on the trailer for this year.  I even got towed out so I could hang on the beach and try to figure out what broke (by the way it was a burnt out coil with maybe 4 hours on it)  Now if we factor in the times I broke something but was able to fix it  enough to get back to the trailer ...

Welcome to the site O0

Yeah, the coil that need replacement was new. It lasted , what, 1.5 -2 hrs.
I hope this one is longer lived.

Are you running a ballist resistor?
Title: Re: So new
Post by: Boatwidow on October 03, 2007, 02:45:43 PM
We have an MSD Ready to Run distributor and Accel coil.
Title: Re: So new
Post by: Marcsrollin on October 03, 2007, 03:17:02 PM
The Accell coil comes with a ballist resistor according to the Jegs catalog.
This is what a ballast resistor looks like. It makes sure your coil only gets 12 volts , not the full amount of voltage your alternator puts out.

If you don't use it you will keep blowing out coils.
