Which was a total misunderstanding. I made reference to an inside joke between her and I that was in reference to a comment someone made about an animated photochop of her several months back in a post, and I guess she didn't catch it and thought I was spreading rumors about her sex life.

In the recent past, civility and decorum have been lacking on the part of some Forum users and this will not be tolerated from this day forward. Some flagrant abusers of this site have already been banned for their conduct.

The one's screaming the loudest are the one's that have the least to offer a boating board. They could delete the Sandbar and Political Rhetoric sections and other than it being easier to navigate to a boating thread, I won't notice much difference.

This happens here on the river with the Casino's. They come in with new ways of doing things thinking they know what they are doing and shortly find out, they should have left it alone because it worked.
Cleaning up is always good. But taking it to far will only hurt them in the end.
Too many web sites and too many mags to get all butt hurt about it, just move on to another site ;)

Over the years I've watched mags change their format and fall from grace due to a few when the mass wanted and liked the way it had been. With growth comes change. It's a shame that HB has to flex what ever it is they think they have to show or shove their ideas. When in fact without the people that came on there and contributed they wouldn't have a pot to piss in. So now everyone will come over here. That is good for the knowledge that will come here. We will all benifit from it and I hope that over the next few months the "newbies" understand that this site has a honest home feel to it. But my worries are still......With growth comes change....just my .02 Al

A long time ago I saw the direction hotboat was going and didnt like it, thats why i created this site....and now, they are driving everyone off. I don't expect to capture all of their fallout as the place falls apart, but slowly I'm seeing people coming over this way to see whats going on....and I welcome each and every one of them....new guys or old timers.
Now, if I had the power, I would create my own mag too and it would be catered to the grass roots of performance boating and show hotboat the market they overlooked, but I just don't have the resources or money to pull off something like that. It's disappointing to watch the only mag who covered our hobby turn its back on us and sell out.
I know SoCalJetBoats.com has had its ups and downs, but its still pretty young and growing. I have many exciting plans for this site in the coming months to cater better to the jetboat community.

i like the layout (look and feel) but could careless about large boats sitting in coves....or poker runs.
The jetboat community accomplished 2 large historical things this year.......Circle Boat racing with the NJBA and brought back CompJet to the APBA ....both for the first time in over 20 years. The magazine was totally blind to it.
Not to mention the world finals in Phoenix....or the Parker Enduro.....or the SCSC/APBA Finals.
....they just coverd some boring ass poker run and did stories on some cookie cutter factory boats that some guys fat wallet built and never put a wrench on it himself.

Brad that is what I ment about the old style mags that changed their format...look at the hot rod world...the grass root "rat rods" are coming back and strong...and with mags that show "how too's" just like the old days. when are these "high dollar" mags going to understand there is a market out there that they are completely blind to? If I had the bucks you bet your ass I'd put out a mag that showed how to glass and install and build....that is what people want...but then I could be just rambling....my 11 year old rum is kicking in.....lol....

Got Banned today Tom for no reason. I really do think they just did some random banning. I've never done anything innappropriate over there. I really don't know what's goin on but I might become strictly socaljetboats now :)

Ditto. While I'm a newcomer, this is head and shoulders above any other of the sites out there. We'd love to meet some of you in person some day but until then, we'll just do it this way.

no, the site is still up, they just screwed up the indexing...i have a link straight to my subscribed threads that works....you can google an old thread on there and access it that way.
not sure whats going on over there, but its a ghost town and people are jumping ship quick to other sites, including this one.

you know what i was i thinking after im several beers in already 8:30a.m because it's a bad day (that's in another post) anyway back on the subject this is probably the nicest forum i have ever been on and to be managed by someone who pretty works a job and to keep this all up is pretty damn cool in my book probably the worst one i have been on is screamandfly and they dont like you unless you an outboard guy and they totally diss on jets even though they have a jet and v-drive section can't get questions answered and there solution to everything is seal the transom up and put a ob on it

Here is a interesting story i just found.....
My name is Chris Davidson. I live in Las Vegas. Since 1986, I have been in charge of Hot Boat Magazine with one job title or another. One of the pivotal moments in Hot Boat's existence came in 1989, when it was purchased by LFP Inc., the company spearheaded by Hustler Magazine founder Larry Flynt. Hot Boat's new association with LFP would have profound ramifications, especially from a financial perspective. For example, no longer would I have to deal with U.S. Marshalls drilling door locks and demanding that I send our employees home until Chuck Pierce, the previous owner, paid our back payroll taxes. Longtime Hot Boat executive editor Kevin Spaise and I would no longer have to pay our own expenses to attend the L.A. Boat Show. We now had the funds to blossom from a regional based magazine, both for content and distribution.
At Flynt's Beverly Hills offices, Kevin and I would often read the message board with wide eyes: numerous letters and phone messages threatening everything from bombing the building to gunfire and random mayhem were posted every day. Many issues and memories were created during the following 18 years.
Even given these and other drawbacks, working for Flynt and in particular company president Jim Kohls, turned out to be an incredible experience. Kevin and I made many friends while testing some of the finest performance boats in the world. Over the years, I built up a team of core players who were instrumental in producing the best performance boating magazine: award winning writer Kevin Spaise, senior tech editor Jim Wilkes, Jet Tech columnist Greg Shoemaker, photographer extraordinaire Fernando Escovar, my go-to guy editor Brett Bayne, and my girl Friday, Cindy Bergstrom. The work we did together was rewarding both personally and professionally.
And then everything changed.
In August, LFP sold the magazine to new owners. To my astonishment, the sale was initiated in a very secretive manner by my brother, Darrin, whom I had hired years before to help me out at Hot Boat. Unbeknownst to me, he had assembled financial backing, approached LFP's corporate vice president and negotiated a deal that would make him the new editor-in-chief.
The reverberations from the betrayal were enormous.
Several people who depended on the income from Hot Boat were suddenly at the unemployment office. Most disturbing of all was the fact that my brother had attempted to destroy my reputation with people that I had worked with for almost 20 years for his own personal gain. The incident was nothing short of Shakespearian in scope.
All of this transpired while I was in Memphis, paying respects to my hero, Elvis Presley. There was a certain symbolism in being fired from the only job I had held as an adult on August 16th, the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death, standing outside Graceland. To add to the air of chaos, back in Vegas, my brother and several associates made attempts to enter my offices while I was confirmed out of town to seize various assets, while LFP attempted to turn off our phone lines and more. This was definitely my saddest trip to Memphis, and one of my darkest days ever.
After the dust settled, I regrouped with a new mission: to create an even better magazine for performance boaters, with an online version that would include a heavy emphasis on video. Our exciting web presence would include an online version of the magazine, breaking news, swimsuit model archives, manufacturer interviews and tech tips.
Joining me at Performance Boats is the core team of players I mentioned before, plus Joker's Wild owner Todd Taylor, TPI owner Gary Taylor, art director Richie Solomon, ace videographers Earl Crowe and Gary Meeker, and web designer Craig Lathrop.
Although I called the shots at Hot Boat, I never personally wrote any articles and my inner thoughts were shared only with a select few. All of that changes as of now. As I venture into this world of cybserpace, you'll get to watch what it's like to deal with Reggie Fountain, you'll get a front-row seat at the Offshore World Finals, and you'll get my first-hand account of life in the driver's seat at Performance Boats magazine. I've got a lot to say; hope you have time to listen.

Very interesting post Brad. I was going to paste it this AM but my grommets wouldn't stop hollering for breakfast. I would like to echo much of what Chris D says. I worked there for a short while in 1987-8 when there was NO money. One "reporter" wanted to attend a big race in MO. that he paid for a bus ticket out of his own pocket. Some of these guys had worked in the general field for a long time and still were not being paid much more than minimum wage, they really did it for the love of boats.
Chris is a very nice guy and built like a NFL defensive lineman, I hope his brother doesn't show up at home for Christmas. LOL
And like someone else said, "Dave is so screwed." HB SUX ;D

Thay dont like anybody (screamandfly) !!! Even when I asked a question about my OB over there , the great tech wisdom thay provided was " get a manual " . Thay must be a bunch of bitches over there because every one knows real men dont need a fuc#### manual ::), just a little info sometimes . ;D

I've looked at the HB site.......... having belonged to a very good Yamaha FZ1 forum for the last couple of years ( www.yamahafz1oa.com ) Iknow a good forum when I see it. the people that post regularly are usually helpful and knowledgable on the site's subject as well as other outside interests that come up from time to time. This forum seems to fit that mold as does the FZ1 site mentioned earlier. The HB site is full of wannabe ballers that are in-debt up to there a-holes with their six figure toys. most of them seemed like they wouldn't give you the time of day unless your floatin along in the latest 42' whatever that's powered by twin blown monster motors that use 150 times the fuel that their tow rigs gulp. Not my thing! Sorry if you're offended but that's just my 2 cents.

Why are you a superior being if you are floating on a $100K DCB instead of a 30 yr old $6K daycruiser that you have to store outside? I like only having one house payment each month, it helps me sleep much better. $100K doesn't even get you a boat you can ski behind or tow thru the local Del Taco ;D

Well, the hotboat forums set the standard in my opinion. That's where I got my forum start. The original hotboat is where I have met everybody I know on this site. I'm greatful for the friends I made on HB and I will miss it . There is no need to bash hb. I am glad that this site will benefit from it though.

i agree with you....it was a great place...but i wasnt satisfied with what it offered for the jet community, thus why this site came into play.
now what has happened in the past few days baffles me....i lost a lot of respect for them.....now i am reading that rexone is trying to talk some sense into them to bring it back with a stronger set of rules and guidelines. good luck...the damage is done. i dont care if they only banned people who 'deserved it' ....their execution was childish.

The website came down to be redesigned and should be back up by the first of the year, hopefully. The deal with charging people is, subscribers to the magazine can post on a moderated forum for free. If they want to post to the non-moderated forum it will cost them $9.95 a year. People who are not subscribers will have to pay $49.95 a year to subscribe to it. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Now I want to make this clear so everyone here....

Just about everyone I've met through boating came from HB. Great place with great peeps . For me , as time wore on it became more and more unbearable with dama . I used to buck up and sift through all the shit to find the nuggets of tech gold . An infinite amount of knowledge over there and I can only hope for the benefit of all of us jet , v-drive , half whacks , and yes even the whacker owners , some of that knowledge finds it's way over here .

If they made the magazine worth a shit I would subscribe again. The last issue I read had pictures that did not match what was being said about them. When I looked at showcase boats it was obvious they have pics of different boats mixed up in them. One bad had zoomies and bassett headers?? One boat had a blower and a tunnell ram????

Just about everyone I've met through boating came from HB. Great place with great peeps . For me , as time wore on it became more and more unbearable with dama . I used to buck up and sift through all the shit to find the nuggets of tech gold . An infinite amount of knowledge over there and I can only hope for the benefit of all of us jet , v-drive , half whacks , and yes even the whacker owners , some of that knowledge finds it's way over here .

I use this site for comraderie since I got my project in the summer; I went to HB for a lot of the techie issues but was always here because of the folks.
I actually got 'Patches' from HB but I was pointed there by this site (specfically Brad).
For what I was looking for, SCJB was much better than HB.

I spent a lot of time last nite reading posts on what was left of the HB site and again this AM (going in the "backdoor links") before they completely shut things down.
Without sounding melodramatic, I have to say it reminded me of walking thru the rubble of a bombed out city or the aftermath of a some huge natural disaster. People (the HB community) had genuine emotions of shock, dismay, confusion and anger.
To lots of folks HB was a very important part of their daily social lives. HB forums was to me at times like an Old Frontier town with no real Sheriff or "managerial" direction. It was to some degree "out of control", but with a limited amount of effort, I believe it could have been "fixed" or saved, and actually made better.
There was an amazing amount of good done too, and lots of good interaction, discusion and information.
Unfortunately the "new HB powers that be" made a decision to "Blitz", tear down and level the entire site.
I must respect their right and privilege to do this, after all it's their site. But as an experienced business person, I truly believe the method, lack of warnings and follow thru was, IMO ,not well thought out . I suspect they (new HB management) may never know or completely comprehend the long term ramifications of what they have done and It may be that at some corporate number crunching level they really don't care ? Just my contribution to this discussion.

That in it's self , and in my eyes is what made HB the "hub" of all boating websites . For that I'm heart broken .
Tom kind of got a good mental picture goin . I thought of it more like the president was shot and on life support . Now we're all just standing around to see how he comes out of it , if at all .

Hot boat tried to charge everyone a few years back to be a member if you already hadn't signed up before a certain date. As you can imagine that didn't go over too well, and it won't work now either. No one in their right mind would pay to talk in a forum when there are so many others, better ones to boot, to do so...like here, laidback and banderdog.
And their magazine has sucked for almost 20 years maybe more. Davidson use to come into the shop to hand out the annual awards, that's a joke in itself, and we use to bitch to him back then. He didn't care, they just want the ads placed...period. Nothing else matters, if their subscriptions would go up featuring stories on nothing but Bayliners, that's what the articles would be on. You can't blame them, as the market changes so do they, Powerboat jumped ship long ago annd went where the money is, and hot boat is just about there. fuk 'em.

Now, if I had the power, I would create my own mag too and it would be catered to the grass roots of performance boating and show hotboat the market they overlooked, but I just don't have the resources or money to pull off something like that. It's disappointing to watch the only mag who covered our hobby turn its back on us and sell out.

After I finally figured out what was going on with the HB forums, I was bummed out. HB was the second forum I found(the first being the predecessor to banderlog, the temporary realjetboats board). The peeps on HB represented a wide variety of knowledge, especially in the early years when there weren't many sites on the net for boaters. The folks there were always willing to help me out. I believe that the reason my blower engine runs as well and as reliably as it does is a direct result of a few of those guys over there. It is ashame that the site evolved into what it ended up. But once you waded through all the drama and BS, the core of knowledge was still there.
This site as well as others has taken the boating forums to the next level and I appreciate the individuals that put forth the effort to create and maintain them.
But at the same time, I'll miss HB. :-\

You are exactly right.
Bottom line is most magazines are struggling, not counting the crazy gossip ones. My next door neighbor is a pretty well know film critic, as well know as a film critic can be I guess, and he's worried he'll be out of a job in the print business within 5 years. The net's changed everything. Same here, this site and the others, are gonna bury the mags as we we know them.

Alot of the drama that went on over there where the @ss clowns in the Sandbar. JustJets always maintained a great atmosphere, and the wealth of knowledge and helpfulness got me thru some tough issues with my boat.
It will be missed, but now we have our own Site O0

I guess I'll put my neck in the noose. I wasn't banned from HB, and last I saw, only about 20-25 were. Quite a few (but not all) probably SHOULD have been bounced IMHO. When I first signed up on HB back in 2001, it was because it was a true hot boat board. The drama was discouraged (by the community!)to maintain it as a boating site. Somewhere it changed and turned into Dramaboat. It has de-evolved steadily into something that was more painful than enjoyable. Drama was the norm, and anyone posting an alternative viewpoint was electronically beatdown. When I ran Roostwear, I had a board that I made to be drama free, but I guess as it is in society, sensationism and trainwrecks sell. Hell, I doubt anyone here even remembers Roostwear, but after a few years of dealing with the Hotboat mentality ("I want it free, and NOW, and if I don't get it I'll slam the hell out of you on the boards"), I folded it. I stopped holding the Freeboard Challenged events because of the "new Hotboater" mentality. I still have all the content from Roostwear, and have been looking for the right place to make it available again. You know, a true "boating community", not a community that occasionally has posts about boats. In a nutshell... what happened on Hotboat was done badly, but thank God it happened. The newer members to the online boating community should have been around in 2002 or so..... damn you would have loved it.........

the more people you have , the more drama therer will be. HB had thousands of people logged on every day. When any forum gets that big, there will be drama. I visit other forums that are fairly large and they're no different than HB. >:D People need to quit being so darn sensitive.

Hey Roost I rememember Roostwear, heck I bought my Southwind sticker for my truck years ago before you closed shop. You hit the nail on the head with your post. I never got to make it to a FBC event, but it was on my list to do before they ended. I joined HB in 2001 also. Times were different. You are right though, the 25 or so that got banned are all of a sudden suprised? "Me?" "Why me?". Its almost like the new owners wanted to make them feel "special" before closing down the doors. One last F' u before implosion. And they did it why? Because they can!!! >:D

I frequent boards on other interests and they have minimal moderation. The community helps maintain an atmosphere of (relative) respect and focus. If I ever have the urge to, I'll search out "lookatmybowelmovements.com", but I don't appreciate that kind of crap (pun intended) do be tolerated and encouraged on a boating board. I kind of expect posters on a boat board to own, or at the very least, have an interest in boats. there will always be off-topic conversation, and that's not bad. It's when a boating board doesn't HAVE a topic any longer that it's time for it to Hotboat.

Welcome, This is a great site not to much drama (all though thats fun to watch , kinda like a reality T.V. show ie. Osbornes ) like the other sites R.Ds. H.B. and some of the others . this place feels like home Brad does a good job keeping the drama to a min. Just a bunch a good ole boys dispensing good and not so good advice . People need to learn to respect others and just 'cuz they have a mouth, doesn't mean they shouldn't SHUT the damn thing occasionally.

First off, thanks for taking the time to post those....i love seeing old ads and pictures. the rogers guacamole ad for harold bruce is neat....roger finney just told me some stories about that boat about a month ago.
second of all.....no, the crap on hotboat wont be tolerated here.....i do my best to keep the drama down....so do others. i get PM's from people when they see something going on they dont like....which i appreciate....it shows people care about the integrity of this site. this isnt just my site...yeah, i built it and maintain it....but it wouldnt be shit if it wasnt for all of the members contributing to it. The door is always open for advice and suggestions for the site. I value all feedback I get greatly. Positive or negative.

I rather have a website where I can express my feelings openly, negative or not, than a website where a Nazi administrator sensors everything and keeps everything "mild". We've had our share of hissy fits here on socaljetboats, and so did hotboat but they had more people on there everyday. IMHO hotboat didn't have much drama on it, if you saw a thread or something that had some you didn't have to read it. No one's forced to be dragged into being part of drama, or even acknowledgeing it's existance. Hotboat was a good site, lost of info with people who can answer questions. Them shuting it down I hope sure isn't because of the way "people acted", cause if that's a case I wouldn't want to visit anyways. It's an open discussion forum in the Sandbar, BR and PR. And allmost all threads that we're in the tech sections that had became a shouting match was moved to Bench Racers anyway. And the moderators did plenty of their share of locking and deleting threads. I enjoy this site as well, and I don't think if someone starts disagreeing with others, that Brad is going to go all Nazi on their ass. He moves the threads to the appropriate places.

it happens on every forum and it irks me.....2 people get in a conversation that is totally off topic and drives the thread into the ground. ...i know im guilty of it too.....but some are worse then others.
Some people just need to think before they post - "Will this add value to the thread"....instead of replying with a "lol" or something totally irrelivant to the subject of the thread.
Because of my work, I might see it a bit differently....I work with servers all day and when i get stumped on an issue i turn to google.....and i when find someone with a similar issue, i have to sift through 10 pages of 2 guys discussing what they had for lunch before i find the answer. It frustrates me.

Personally I loved HB for the extremely wide variety of topics/info that was discussed daily. I got a lot of News from there in addition to alot of entertainment. However I get a lot more work done during the day now. They had a large number of morons over there but it was still better than nothing for getting good info or just giggles.

As Old Rigger said earlier on in this post, it's not the first time they tried the pay site thing. It didn't work that time and it won't work this time. Way too many other places for everyone to migrate to (like this one). I signed up on HB back in 2000 (one of the first to join). It was like the wild west back then. Death threats and people getting way way out of hand. Although I had signed up, I wouldn't hang out there (it gave me a headache). I'd pop in from time to time and see the same ol crap, then bounce to Banderlog or RJB and a few others. If you thought it was bad just before they shut it down, you should've seen it back then (very mild by comparison).
I could care less that they've shut it off with one exception.............They dumped all that information (the good stuff that was mixed in amongst the crap). All gone and some of it never to be seen again.
Thanks to So Cal Jetboats.com for providing a place for all us people (that are too cheap to pay for a forum).

Now-a-days....hosting costs are very minimal. I started hosting this website with 1and1 (the AOL of hosting companies) using a business account ($9/month). I got fed up with their performance and not having control over what services were running on the server, so I got a hosted Virtual Machine ($60/month)....with unlimited bandwidth.....how can you justify charging for memberships for an UNMODERATED section of the site....and even more for the moderated section. :o >:(
its pure greed. thats all.
