Anyone been or planning on a trip soon?

I've been tuna fishing I don't plan on going soon but I do plan on going to California and going out the Channel Islands to go fish soon what do you need to know it aint the same like it used to be because Mexico sold its water to Japan so they're penning up most of the tuna before they get beyond Mexico and run up north so that the Southern California now is in a horrible place the last 5 years or so see you need to go get the way down into Mexico or just go to an island like cataline or going to overnight boat or a full day boat and go to channel islands too something like that if you want to do some good fishing you might get a yellow tails out there if you're not going to see much too and I goes you know maybe Newport Beach Sometimes but they're going to be few and far between so if you going to go on a tuna boat that cost you $300 for they don't do that well you know better off going on at 2 three day trip spending 1800 going way too deep into Mexico
if you have questions on what boats r good and where to go let me know or different kind of tackle for a tune or different fish let me know
-
Thanks for the response man, but Sunday I'm heading out on my uncles 30ft. The yellowtail, yellowfin, bluefin and dorado are close. 8 miles south of Dana, the 209 is producing good quantities.
I was just curious if any SCJBers have been out recently or plan on going. My uncle and I always need extra people to pitch in for gas.
And it definitely sucks how bad fishing has become. But guess you gotta get it while it's hot

The Bluefin bite is only going to get better! Mexico has reached their quota of 5,000 tons so it suspended that fishery till the end of the year. My brother has been going out but unfortunately I haven't because of that fricking four letter word. :banghead: :banghead: Weekends can sometimes be tough with it being a parking lot out there, the pressure. Drew he's been going to the 267 and another good spot is 10 to 12 miles off the Domes. Also been trolling the natural color cedar plug and mexican flag for an ocasional jig stop. Just my .02

My dad and I went out last Thursday on the New-Lo-An out of Diego. We had a great day with limits on Yellowfin and a couple Dorado. Fishing is good right now! One of the guys on the boat hauled in a 117 lb Opah witch took him 3 hrs. We also went out to Catalina on Friday and got into a good school of Yellow tail. Good week of fishing!
-
Nice!!!! That's a badass dodo!
We absolutely slayed the tuna today. Can't wait to go on the Aztec again. Gonna be going to Catalina/209 again Thursday on my uncles boat.

Gonna be going to Catalina/209 again Thursday on my uncles boat.
Talked to a skipper friend of mine out of Long Beach yesterday and he said they're killing the yellow tail out there right now. I'm planning on another trip early next week. Hopefully (fingers crossed)
-
Definitely want to get into the yellows. Nothing like throwing iron. Where do you usually go out of?

Lately I've been going out on the Gail Force or Triton with Capt Ryan Gingler out of Long Beach Sportfishing, Berth 55. Other then that I have a buddy with a 26ft that we hit the Island with. This pic is from our last trip on his boat south of Catalina. It was a good day!
-
Heck ya!!!! Hopefully we get out tomorrow!

Man I'm jealous, can't get out cause of fricking work :banghead: :banghead: My brother has been going out on his boat and doing OK. Last weekend found patties with fish on em but wouldn't hit a fricking thing you threw to em. Said the hell with it and put on his mask snorkle and fins. Jumped in with his spear gun and was picking the ones he wanted
-
Captain Greg is great. I have been going on his boats for years.

I'm going on the 20th but it's a private charter.

Right on. Well good luck. Lmk if you every book on the aztec

Heading out on the Monte Carlo out of 22nd street for private charter in a couple weeks...should be good, only 30 people.
I only have spinning gear for the beach, so I plan on renting gear. I found a couple penn Jigmaster 500 reels on 30-50lb rated rods in the $100 range...should I pick one up? Not spending $1500 on serious gear right now, I just wanna catch a few fish. I'm told the rental gear is shit
-
You'd be perfectly fine with a 500 on 30lb. Be prepared to use flouro leader tho. We got into bites that only 20lb flouro was getting hit. Also size #1 hooks. If you can throw iron, get a couple 4oz mega baits....
On Thursday, I went back out to 209 (28 miles west of DP) we spent all day chasing the tuna. The wife landed her first tuna ever on 20lb spinning gear.
Sent with my Fingers
-
Also, do you know the length of your trip? If you're staying local, your spinning gear will be fine. Fish 15 or 20 lb and you're set. If you are heading offshore or to Catalina for yellowtail, 25lb will be plenty. Let me know when your trip gets closer and I'll give you more info.

That's awesome! Looks like she had a good time.
Fluorocarbon leader is a must out there! But, if you're running 30lb line why would you not go with 30lb fluoro leader? I mean if the line is supposedly invisible in the water you wouldn't need to go lighter, that would be working against what you had put on in the first place.
-
That's what I thought. Have yet to get a single hit on 30 flouro. Both yellowfin out at 209 were on 20lb flouro. Breaking strength on the 20lb seaguar is 16lbs, that's with a 36" leader. If you are needing more then 15lbs of drag, your into a big fish.
It all depends how you're willing to work it. Luckily on cattle boats they have enough bait to create a frenzy to where the fish don't care if you have 50lb braid. But with my uncles single scoop tank. It's a game if finesse.
Sent with my Fingers
-
Also, the reason for using 30lb mono or 50-60lb braid is for one reason on a cattle boat. It will give you a better shot at not getting sawed off by those that don't follow their bait or fish...
Sent with my Fingers
-
I don't fish more then 25lb anyway and most of the time I'm on 20lb. Set the drag a little lose and work the fish in. It's more fun that way. Like you I haven't had good luck with heavy line.
Cattle boats get a little crazy! I agree with you on that!

Lol, my little avet handled all the 15-20lb class fish I could throw at it. My tiburon is spooled with 30, and it's gonna be getting braid with 25lb top shot before my next trip.
I agree with you. There isn't much fun in cranking a fish to the boat. I'm all about loose drags and battles haha.

So, our trip was a flop...one 24" or so yellowtail on the boat, a couple bonito, and 15 or so rockfish...8-18". I didn't catch shit...cap'n couldn't find the fish

22nd street in San Pedro on the Monte Carlo...we were supposed to be a 20 person load on the the TruLine, but the guy running the show "upgraded"...we had 45 or so...the Monte Carlo fishes 6 hour trips for sea bass and rockfish, not island trips for tuna. Got screwed. Going out on my buddy's 30' pilot house next weekend out of San Clemente...he told me to bring at least 3 coolers full of ice. Should be better
-
Lol, it will def be better next weekend. I booked the Aztec out of Seaforth on sept 22-23 if anyone wants to join. The aztec has been limiting out on tuna before 9am...

I caught a decent YT, plenty of bones, a few rat yellows, a ray, got really fucked up , caught a seal that took the 4 of us 2 hours to reel in, and passed out in a been bag chair on the deck, it was awesome
