Title: Spectra starter for BBF,what if??
Post by: skee on November 02, 2011, 04:49:02 PM
Hey Guy's,as ya know I have a 77 Spectra 18,460 Ford...The starter has been cranking a bit slow,so now that the season is over for me I decided to replace it....I got it out and the starter is marked American Motors and also has about a 1/6" shim between the starter and the "bell housing". 1st question, why is it an American Motors starter instead of a Ford (the same?) and where is a good place to get a starter for this thing? Now....it also has a hole for a Top mount starter and I also have the starter for that already,do ya think that is a factory hole and can I just bolt and wire up the top mount starter??  Thanks in advance!

slow starts?  hows your ground from the battery to the motor/bellhousing? i had some slow starts and it turns out the ground cable was loose.

The top mount starter, do ya know which way it is going to crank the motor over ??? They are made to go either way.

I would rebuild the original one as it is already "matched" to the flywheel.   THere are a ton of diff Ford starters out there.

X2 and post a pick of your boat. Is your hull a bull nose. I have a 73 spectra with 460/berk

His boat looks just like my old boat, which was a 1976 spectra mini day 460/berk. I saw his in Fullerton getting the interior done and having new tanks installed.

Did yours have a belly tank or side tanks....how was the porpoising? Mine has a tad and was thinking bout changing to saddle but spoke with Jim Brock yesterday(he has same hull) and said to keep it a belly.

Mine had side tanks. It didn't porpoise. I had a diverter and it ran real good for me. Look up some o my post there is some video from Blythe. Also on YouTube under bigbrosiff.
