Title: Suck My Wake
Post by: FordLover on September 25, 2009, 08:00:25 AM
Was watching The Great Outdoors last night with John Candy and Dan Akyroyd.  I love the part when they rent the boat "Suck My Wake".  Fricking Blown V-Drive.  Sweet ass boat.  But seriously, could you really rent a boat like that?  I guess back in the 80's perhaps.  So could you back then or even now?  That would be fun.  My buddies think no and I tend to agree with them.

Doubtful that a boat like that could ever be rented particularly in todays "litigeous" climate , We actually own a "sister boat" to that  one of very few ever produced I've long thought of trying to Clone that boat as a project but the movie people probably wouldn't appreciate it , Great movie though lots of laughs .. brad, i wonder how many people noticed that. in previous post i mentioned how i love bass lake(the movie was filmed there and i have the movie). i've watched that clip many times and when dan aykroyd turns the key you can see the RPM's go up then they show the blower and the pulley is'nt turning. funny!!

also water starts puking out the headers before the smoke comes out at the start-up - does that happen with flat bottoms?

great topic ford lover!!

Ha Ha Ha!!! I was JUST watching that youtube clip and was going to post it.  Yeah, the blower isnt moving.  Not sure why they would fake it especially when it shows the RPM's rising when he turns the key.
Also, the shifter that he uses to put it into "drive" that was where my cav plate shifter was at.  Not sure about that.
Either way though, love the movie and especially love the part of the movie.  "You Bastard, you bastard"...................."Go faster"?

there was a discussion on the ''other site'' a while back about suck my wake and someone said the blower it self was fake but the engine was running . i don't know if that's true or not... i am trying to find it

I think the belt was on the wrong end. The whole blower looked like a plastic cover.

Looks like when the boat went up the ramp they had moved the rudder so it would not damage it!

I read the blower was hollow out sitting on a tunnel ram. Plane 454 engine. They had two for the movie. One is in St Louis MO now.

It always bugged me that Roman suggests that they rent a jet boat but then its a v-drive. Sweet boat though.

From what I have read that boat was for sale a couple of years ago. Not sure if that was true. And some where I have a pic of it sitting next to another black boat . In a garage.

No no no. You guys got it all wrong

That boat had the Original "Go Baby Go" switch

He has the blower on a switch just like Mad Max Road Warrior.

Duh!

If you watch the scene slowly where John Candy goes up the boat ramp you can see a cable under the boat trailer pulling it through the water and up the ramp. Great movie I love when his skis make smoking marks on the doc when he starts skiing

The boats may still be around, built by a guy who goes by roman1 on the boards.  Apparently two '72 Millers were built.

I seem to recall that the engine firing sequence, just before John Candy drives it up the launch ramp by shifting the cav plates, was an effect created with fire extinguishers.  I want to say that info might be from the DVD commentary or special features.

Love this movie and especially the boat.

The pictures were jacked from the brand X website.  Sorry, I do not know who to give credit.

Had to throw the DVD in.  In the water ski scene, Dan Aykroyd shifts the cav plates into gear

I'm just sitting around the house waiting for the tide to go out to go surfing,
Looking up my friend John Miller (Miller boats)saw all these replys to the "suck my wake boat". filming was done at bass lake ca. The director knew nothing about boats, we went through several boats , spending $100k on boats,
When Dan akroid saw this flat bottom ripping up the lake, Dan said "that's the boat" , the prob was it had one seat ,
I said if that's the boat you want , it's sitting in my garage, my brother in law as the same boat , ( mine was a wood deck , his was fiberglass, both were "millers" both had bench seats , 1/3, 2/3 , (bucket/bench combo) the production bought both $$$$$ . We didn't want to deal wth the blower, so we put a hollowed out blower over the existing tunnel ram . One of the famous lapoint brothers did the skiing,
John candy set on the back of a ski boat
Special skis for the streak, and smoke on the dock ( no CGI back than)
The ramp scene was scripted
2 things I wish I still had ;
(1) suck my wake
(2) Ferrari I built for "ferris Buellers day off"

Ps no one builds a wood deck like the millers , I never knew you could bend wood like that
Pss Miller boats were the first all open boat,
Dave Miller was the first to inset the cavitation plate into the hull, before that the boat builders just bolted A piece of stainless steel angle to the transom

I have to say, Suck My Wake has influenced the course of my life.

Cheers,

Ingot those same exact exhaust brackets for our jet boat and the sanger super jet hull I am selling has the same trim tab set up but spilt for the jet pump. I can see why someone told me the sanger looks just like a Rogers.

There's more :)
Dan always drove the boat, no stunts,
No fire extinguisher was used for steam
2nd unit hydrauliced the motor on one of the boats trying to make steam come out of the Bassett headers while it idled,
The boats set around the universal lot for awhile, than they sold them , less motors, that was the deal, we each got our 454's , ( I took the $ and bought a 22' Shiada)
Some foot notes about the movie;
The door the bear jumped on was made from steel with 3/4" plexi widows,
We put an air bag under it at the hinge point, what we didn't know was the bear thought the door was a toy , it was hard to get the bear off it,
Const built 2 cabins
1 at bass lake (taken apart, now part of the tour)
1 at universal for stage work (interior work)
I fell 30' out of a tree , and walked away from it , ( God said "not yet" )
Ducies lodge burnt down later that year:((
By the time the sets were built at bass lake, it was winter, we scraped all the special rigs we built for the water ski scene $250k
That's when we put John on the transom of a ski boat ( I thought it worked)
