I bid on this boat but reserve not met; however, I now have offer from seller to purchase for $2000; my $1200 bid is basically what I can do but thought I'd get some input and think on it.
'76 18' Waikiki (claims same company that made Tahiti/Kona); 455 olds 'A' (?), Jacuzzi YJ.
My main concern is the cracked stringer. I'm also concerned about fitting my family of 5 comfortably (this is why I need open bow; no room for anyone else; maybe I'll just keep looking).
Brad: saw PM but haven't looked yet because wanted to get this post on; I'll look now.

My .02: Pass on this one.
I think the Schuster you passed on is basically the same except:
The Schuster had a much better pump.
The Schuster was much cheaper.
They both need paint, fiberglass work, interior's, it's a no brainer to me.
Don't get caught up in a boats looks from a distance, look close and be picky unless it's a great (cheap) deal.
Once again, you're severly cutting your options short if you can't convince yourself to make a closed bow an open bow.

Thanks. I guess I've been looking at a lot of boats in different areas and am confused on the Schuster you referred to (and in another post); the one I see in your post didn't have an motor in the pic; is this the one you're referring to or was there another?

I'm not opposed to opening the bow of a closed bow, although I'd prefer to have one open off the bat; I just figure a job like that is another $grand$, but I don't know.

I'd wait for old rigger to chime in on these polynesian boats . He's been working on them since he was a wee lad . Check the wiring on it . If it's a disaster, he probably did it early on as a little kid. ;) If I remeber correctly , his father would stick him under the decks cuz he was little kid and fit under there well to do the wiring , he wrote his name under the deck of one or some I think . He's waiting for it pop up. Hope he can clear that story up for me , could have been a bunch BS too.

buy who you can. Just to get on the water. Then start save money for the openbow. I have seen alot a closed bow's that were "tried' to be an openbow. Not the same. just buy a openbow. that's just my .02

Same boat, I haven't posted pics of the engine yet. ??? I thought you saw that Schuster on Craigslist?
Buy a $50 jig saw, a pencil, and a measuring tape. Draw a dotted line. Cut along dotted line. Make a dash support out of carboard, trace cardboard, trace onto marine grade plywood. Cut plywood/dash supports. Fiberglass both sides of dash support. Fiberglass dash supports to dash and floor. Make bow seat bottom, bottom support, and back support out of plywood. fiberglass plywood bow seats to hull. Take boat to uphosltory shop when you do the rest of the interior. I wish I had a picture of my friend's Nordic converted to open bow. Looks beutifull and he's had it for at least 1 decade if not more without any problems.
if you're looking for a boat at or under a grand, you may to try looking/waiting for one with a blown engine. All the parts will be there and it will have to sell for cheap.

Good "Open Bow 101" Course; but, having never done it, that first cut would be tough to make.
I don't think I saw the Schuster on Craig's (must not have been Orange County list, or I missed it; can't recall).

No, I wasn't shoved under the dash and made to wire boats at and early age by my dad, but that's a much better story than what really happened. When I was about 10 or so, if I wanted to stay up late and watch TV past my normal bedtime (this was in the 60s) my dad made a deal with me. I could stay up late if I made his wire looms. (by the way, I still have the tools he gave me to work with. I don't use them any longer, the wire stripper I bought in the 80s is a much better tool, but for some reason I still have them) He made up a little dash template out of wood that had all the terminals in it just like the gauges in the dash would have and I'd make up looms and watch gunsmoke or bonanza or whatever else we watched back then past 9 o'clock. It was my first job in the boat biz. lol There were no pre-made looms yet, at least not at Tahiti and the riggers had to make their own and because they were all on piece work, that was a time killer. Looking back I probably could have made a killing making looms for the other guys in the shop. Don't forget the boats were very basic back then and the dash usually had only 5 gauges so the looms reflected that. If a speedo were to be added it only need 2 jumpers from another gauge for the lights if they were even wired in. The tail end of the loom I'd leave long and without any terminals. It was very easy for him to trim that to fit.
As far as my dads rigging went, he was the best back then and the only rigger at Tahiti or Hawaiian to never have aboat come back to have something fixed. Not a big deal now but it meant a lot to him then. He was the one who signed the ID plate, or under the deck somewhere, with his initials...that's what I'm looking for. One of his boats, not one of mine. ;)
As far as the boat listed, it was not made by Tahiti or Kona, easy mistake. Tahiti and Hawaiian were Schuster, Hawaiian was for a very short time 'Tiki boats' complete with the Tahiti Tiki head, but a lawsuit stopped that and the change to Hawaiian was made. Kona was Jerry Baker, later he had Baker Custom boats too. I have no idea who Waikiki was. I remember the boat, just never had any contact with them. There were countless builders that popped up in the 70's, the glory days of jet boats and that Waikiki is just a generic splash of a Tahiti.
Based on this picture alone, I'd pass on the boat.

Oh yeah, if you're looking for a great family boat, that Tahiti is a much better deal. It's very wide and with a back to back bench it'll seat 6 to 8. It's a much better riding hull that that dog on ebay you bid on, but with equal power it'll be slower on top end. Don't know if that's important to you or not, but that Tahiti is a 55 mph boat, maybe 60, which isn't bad at all.

Thanks for all the info; I was going to make a counter to the guy but with all this, I'll pass.
While messing with this thing I missed out on a freebie project (even though Brad gave me a heads up); nothing I can do about it now.
BTW, top end doesn't matter to me at all; pulling a skiier out of the water with relative ease with a load of passengers and pulling them around 30-35 is all I care about; with no skiier, I'll be cruising, not racing.

On an older Tahiti. We left there in '74 to go to Hawaiian. ;)

Dude... I've posted it before but my bro in Tucson has a '78 Omega open bow jet with a 2hr old 402BBC and a blueprinted Jacuzzi could stand interior for $2500. He is not advertising it but it at a friends house and runs like a top...I know it's a jacuzzi but it is an open bow for CHEAP!

Dude... I've posted it before but my bro in Tucson has a '78 Omega open bow jet with a 2hr old 402BBC and a blueprinted Jacuzzi could stand interior for $2500. He is not advertising it but it at a friends house and runs like a top...I know it's a jacuzzi but it is an open bow for CHEAP!
