My race boat is flat black with white/red pinstriping (rat rod look)....and its HOT....VERY HOT. I mean put blisters on your ass through your board shorts HOT.

I love the color black, but its not practical by any means for a boat.

i figured it would be... Maybe ill research other shades of Orange that may not be so expensive.

It is sprayed with a 2.0 tip or larger. Gel comes out of the gun super orange peeled but, If you spray with half gel half clear coat it keeps the orange peel down. If you know your way around a gun, the half clear and half gel is almost a walk way finish.  Its just a bit more work sanding the gel flat. Also color sand all the way to 2000 before buffing the gel out.



All the gray was gel coat/clear and clear over walk a way finish.

how many gallons would it take to do a full 21 foot boat?  2-3?

Orange with Black accents would look good if you don't mind bright.

it will be fine with Polly primer. I always primer, makes covering much more easy. You can use any gun. I prefer gravity feed gun. If you use a half clear half gel it will air cure. If it's straight gel it will need wax in the gel or to be covered with PVA to cure. I alway prep the surface with 80 grit. It's much different than paint. It really needs a good bite to stay on there...... Ask me how I know.
For the 21 I would go with go with 3 if it's just one color.

so if i was shooting gel over existing gel you would recommend to shoot a primer over the whole thing?  seems like if you spray a primer and then prep with 80 grit you'd sand that right off. 

depending on the primer. The poly primer im using, lays nice and thick (pretty much sprayble filler) and 80 grit doesnt exactly strip it down unless you try to.

exactly. I always do 3 coats . One light and 2 wet coats. You don't have to go crazy with the 80, just enough for the gel to grab on to.

I had another question. when colorsanding/buffing the gel coat, what grit did you start with? And worked up to 2000? What wheels/compounds did you use to buff?

And just to verify, before i head down there i would need

Gallon of Gelcoat (orange)
Gallon of Clear additive

anything else? And does it clean up with acetone, reducer???

And a spray gun with atleast a 2.0 tip. Im looking at this one its a 2.3. i figure theres enough gel and its thick enough that i can colorsand any orange peel

On a side note. When you did the grey on the inside, did you prep the glass or just spray it over? How well does the gel coat fill in scratches?

Well when iam knocking down orange peel I start with 800 and work my way up. On a normal car or boat that iam just color sanding ill use 1000 1500 2000. I used to use the 3m line of compounds and polish but now I use boat candy. I get much better results with that product over 3M.

Yeah I would talk with AJ down at sur fab. Tell him jake sent ya and he will explain a lot to ya as well. Get plenty of mixing cups, rags and acetone. You can also thin down the gel with acetone but no more than 8%. Clean up acetone as well.

No matter how good you are, you'll always get some orange peel. Lol I've sprayed the stuff in a booth and I got it.

The inside I did many days of prep. Went through 10packs of 80 gritt. It's all in the prep work. The more time you spend on it, the better it will turn out.

well this thread went a different way than expected. I think thanks to Jake ill be spraying it with Gelcoat in the color i wanted to begin with. I gave them a call and prices were as follows (for anyone interested)
Black Gallon of Gelcoat - 60.00
Orange gallon of gel - 100
Clear gallon of gel - 119.99

She said to mix the clear with the gel 50/50 and it will air dry and spray easier.
