Title: trouble to the lake........ now with pics
Post by: Duke on August 21, 2011, 01:07:01 PM
So there I am finnally got my boat working properly on my way to lake castaic when suddenly I hear a lot of clatter coming from the trailer......

I blew out a tire half way there, so I exit the freeway to find my rear right tire on the trailer completly shredded.
The I hear air leaking from my rear left tire.

Soooo..... here I am on the side of the road, took off both tires stuck them in the back of the suv, sent my girlfriend out to a tire shop while I sit here on some grass with my boat missing two tires and the front of it up in the air. I suppose I'm lucky its on a tandem trailer ... can't post pics of it right now from my phone but will when I get home tonight...

Grrrrr I just wanna get on the lake!!! And get the boat on plane......

Ok enough out of me

Sucks about the tires. The bigger question is why did two tires go? Were they old and it was a coincidence? Or was it something else?

The tires were 12 years old, and I jack up the front as much as it would go up which would put more pressure on the back tires.

Are you talking about storing the boat? You jack up the front to store it? If that is the case then that's bad. It puts alot of pressure on the rear springs. Your best option is to head to Harbor Freight and pick up 4 jack stands, or just go cheap and find 4 cinder blocks and put the whole trailer in the air via the axles. Keep the trailer even and the tires inflated and you won't have to worry about flat spots in your tires after long periods of time. Other thing is if it sits outdoors. Try to keep em' out of the sun, but it doesn't sound like you do. They wouldn't have made it past 6 years. lol

heres some of the troubles before the fun times

i dont plan on keeping it stored for longer than a few months for the winter here in socal.

and no its kept under canopy at home in the drive way.

the driver side rear tire wall was cracked enough for the air to start leeking. it was dead by the time i got the first tire off.

Hey Duke, saw you on the water at Castaic yesterday, had I known/realized you were from the boards I would have introduced myself. I was in the blue and white Sanger

do yourself a favor and keep a pair of straps with you or chain.  you can always strap/chain the bad axle up and limp to the nearest tire shop on the other axle.

Yes we launched around  3:30 went for a hot lap (buddy is a lifeguard there, so no hassles) and headed for Elizabeth. we hung out for a few hours and then decided it was time to go for one more hot lap up the ski arm and ended up getting followed by the water cops all the way up.And yes I am sure I'll see you out there.

Tire blew out at like 1, took an hour and a half for the replacments, got some lunch then got to the lake about the same timew you did
