Well I won't go into the "back story" as to what got me to where I am, as most of you all know that my little one (my shadow) has cancer, and can see the original post "damn, life has dropped me", but what I am trying to do here is maybe find a fit/ or in shape person that can give me some REALISTIC/ no gimmicks guidance.
With the situation that has unfolded with my baby girl, it has obviously put quite a bit of stress/sleeplessness/eating absolutely unhealthy, and here I am from a decent 205, to pushing about 245lbs. And that 245 is despite from (before all this) AT LEAST a six pack a day too, not a beer in 2 months!!!!
May 1st., the day we found out what was happening to her, and thru the following week, I dropped about 15 pounds from,... getting emotionally sick and puking constantly from the unbelief of what was happening, ( I compare it to, like in the movies when a person finds out a loved one has died, they get sick and throw up??) I was throwing up constantly!!, I had no appetite, and other than NoDoz, and Monster/RockStars, to keep me going while traveling back an forth to work at 4:00am, to the hospital, keeping shit up at the house, and dealing with all the other obstacles in life, I didn't consume anything actual food wise, for about 15 days or so.
NOW, about 2 months later, with basically living at the hospital, not eating good and correctly, and not having my wife cook dinner, and us on a "normal" regular schedule, I am at a chunky 245lbs!!!
I am wondering if someone here has a regiment they can pass on to me and say " mix this stuff together" eat this, this, and this, and do these exercises, and you will be "healthy" again.
I'm not looking to become the next Mr. Universe, or bench press 350lbs. I just need a little"guidance" to what to do, versus going to a supplements store/ health store/ gymn, that their focus is to SELL ME as much quick cure-alls as possible.
I'm NOT opposed to supplements, or health food stuff IF IT WORKS, but I went to a supplements store today, and saw 1000 different bottles of ""the cure to all my problems"" ha and just turned around and walked out dissapointed and ashamed!
Thanks, Ken

Now I KNOW, some of you fuckers are laughing at me on the "inside", but are thinking and feeling the same about wanting to get back into shape, I just don't care what others think, and have the balls to actually ask for the assistance out loud...ha ha ha

In consideration of your hectic schedule, all the energy drinks and stuff probably helps you keep truckin along. So it would be hard to cut all that I'm sure. But to be honest, I don't know what or how you eat. But meal portions and the right food makes a big difference. For instance, stay away from soda, energy drinks, fried foods, obviously fast food etc.. start eating chicken and vegetables and greens. Pack nuts with your lunch. Even the "good" food for you can be "bad" If you portion/prepare it wrong. A lot of people complain about healthy foods being limited and tastless. Which can be true. But you'll be surprised how many meals you can create out of a lot of healthy foods. If I were you, start walking/running your neighborhood or go hiking somewhere. Find out what suits you best and then keep a routine. Switch it up every now and again. Keep it interesting and something to look forward too, while at the same time slowly start kicking some of the unhealthy habits, and you should start seeing results. I would try that before you go out and buy 500.00 worth of supplements. But there's some good supplements out there that will help with what your doing. Next time your in the nutrition shop, talk to them. They will be all about telling you what additives will help. It's all in yourself though man. Your only gonna see results if YOU really want it. Just cause you take supplements doesn't mean it's gonna do the work for you, it's supposed to help boost you as you exercise and take care of your end of the deal.

Ken, don't take this the wrong way.
Let me tell you that I have had my fair share of life altering surprises. Non of which come even close to the degree of what you are going through, but just the same, I found myself doing and living the same things you are.
The answer is probably not what you want to hear, but here goes.
I am 6'6" tall and my "normal weight" is about 225 pounds. When my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, my wife two weeks later diagnosed with Celiac disease and a month before that my son diagnosed with a little something called Aspergers syndrome, I thought I was going to just curl up in a ball and die.
Anyway, the depression set in pretty hard and to top it all off, we were having money issues and my wife had to go in for emergency back surgery for a herniated disc.. This was all within about a month and a half. :screwy:
All that being said, we were eating like crap and too depressed to exercise. All I had was work. 60-80 hours a week of work.
I was tipping the scales at a svelte and sleek 250 pounds.
The trick for me was sunflower seeds (a lot of sunflower seeds) to keep me "busy" and always have healthy snacks available, it seems counter intuitive, but it works.
My favorite was carrot sticks and those natural fruit roll up things.
I believe it tricks your metabolism into thinking that food will always be available and speeds up the rate of burn.
I could be FOS, but I have been at 235 for over a year now and am never without some sort of food either in my pocket or truck.
keep doing what your doing, be there for the runt, take care of yourself. I cannot imagine the stress you are going through. BTW, I simply have been lazy about sending out a parcel to your work. Seems like I'm going in three directions at once this time of year.
Your a hero in my mind. Take care of everybody.

I used to weigh 240 lbs and lost 70 lbs in 9 months. Most people thought I dropped too much cause I'm 6'1 and some change. No supplements needed in my opinion. This is how I did it...Most people don't believe me when I tell them but here it goes.
First things first my buddy lost 120 lbs in 10 months bu simply eating 6 palm sized portions a day. 6 times a week. Always have a cheat day where you eat whatever you want in a week. Your body requires the bad carbs and fats. Again, 6 palm sized portions per day every 2 hrs. Keeps your metabolism going.
Now I didn't like the way my buddy looked after dropping 120 lbs in 10 months with all the extra skin so that's why I added the one cheat day in a week so I wouldn't lose the weight that quick and believe it or not added a work out routine anybody has time for. P90x. 1 hr per day 5 times a week.
70 lbs in 9 months and I looked fit.

And by 6 palm sized portions per day i don't mean get a double cheeseburger cut it in half and eat each half every 2 hrs...simple nutrition adjustments have to made. Think healthy bud. Instead of red meat eat chicken, not fried! Instead of fries have fried zucchini. Instead of a Cesar salad have a tuna salad.
Beer is a no go. If you like to cop a buzz have hard liquor straight. I know that sounds like a bad advise but that's how I dealt with my "drinking problem" and my weight lol. Small adjustments go a long way. You stick to those simple guide lines you'll watch the pounds melt.

Well here I am, and this is another issue, I flat out CANT SLEEP!! All the shit that's happening to my little girl, just non stop races thru my head, and I have to get up at 4:00am to get to work. I sure the sleep, deprivation isn't helping, but man it just happens.
Ridindirty, I'm in for the long haul, just need a path put in front of me to follow, thanks
GT, it's what I DO want to hear, you've gone thru some shit too!! No need for comparison, whether mines worse or not, shit that happens to family, especially, innocent little ones, just plain fucking SUCKS!! The package... Hell at your leisure, the fact you are doing that means a lot, and --> ME <-- a hero, aw hell no, my little girl is the hero, she is stronger than me, I HAVE curled up into that ball you mentioned, and cried. I'm no hero, just a guy who loves things mechanical, and my family, thanks my friend.
General lee, I'm gonna try that, but you say 6 palm sized portions, every 2 hours, WHAT is it that your eating? Meat, vegetables, dairy, etc??
I got a goodwill copy of that P90X, but honestly haven't tried it, because just figured it was another "gimmick", but if you use it and you say it works, I'll give it a try.
Thanks peeps!!!

General lee, I'm a 2 finger typer, so I was typing you the question while at the same time you were answering it! Ha ha.
Liquor over beer, I've got no problem with that, I'm an avid Everclear connisouer.
But to me the sugars, and yeasts in hard liquor seem worse than the light beer??
But I'm no expert, I'm just a drinker!? I'm actually trying to taper off any booze altogether, or at least tone it done quite a bit.
Thanks for the advice.

It isn't easy.
I finally started working on my goals and now i have 2 knees I might need surgery on.
It ain't easy!
"Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym."
Bitchin quote I read a while back and is so true.
80% of "getting in shape" is what you eat and the hardest.
Always making your own healthy meals.
Cross fit is huge right now and the principle is simple, all your doing is getting off your ass and moving.
That's it.
Every body is different and reacts differently to food, exercise, and supliments.
Most importantly, MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR EXERCISES CORRECTLY!
You can do some serious damage to your body with improper form...
Good luck!

That is alot to comprehend...plain an simple try to eat healthy no snacking ie soda, chips, candy, fried food, then work on your work out routine. 80% of losing weight is eating rite..look it up.

Like Beerjet said CrossFit is huge right now and their principles do really work! Ive been going for 10 weeks now 4x a week and it has been the hardest-funest-brutalist- most motivating thing ive ever done. But its not for eveyone, and time permitting it might not be right for your situation.
My advise to anyone trying to shed pounds and get into shape is simple...
Cut carbs(breads are the big one) and sugars from your diet and start running, period.
Yea yea I know running DOES suck! But start simple- Walk for 2 min, then jog for 30 sec and keep repeating, then move on to walk 2 min jog 1 min and repeat. Keep stepping it up and eventually you wont need the walks in between and youll be able to run for 15+ min straight.
A good quote I recently heard was " it takes 4 weeks for you to notice a change in your body, 8 weeks for your family and friends to notice, and 12 weeks for the rest of the world to notice, so give it 12 weeks! Dont quit!
Its not easy but it will work if you stay after it. Good luck!

Have you tried grief consoling. The stress and lack of sleep are the two biggest problems you face and will keep you from being healthy. Plus if you don't get a handle on it you will start to get sick. Stress and lack of sleep weakens your immune system and you wont be 100% to take care of your daughter. If you don't feel comfortable with the consolers at the treatment center I have a friend in Lake Elsinore that is really good and has delt with personal grief with his own life.

Look through this website and follow this for 30 days and you will notice a significant difference in how you feel. A lot of people I know have done this as well as myself and it works wonders.

If you need a good explanation of how the, not going to call it diet, works call or text me. 9517196641 Bemko. I'd type it all out bud but unfortunately I'm hardly at a computer so I always post from my phone and it would take me all day long. That P90X is not a gimmick believe me. Actually works.

X2...not to mention once you hit 30+ it's not a diet anymore it's supposed to be a lifestyle.

That's exactly what it is.
It literally it's reprogramming your entire mind set.
Otherwise you will struggle.

I think thats unrealistic for a rookie...(i couldn't do it)
I went from 290+ to 215 in 11-12 months (6'3"), and maintain ~220 (I'm still fat :screwy: looking for 205)
There is a lot of good ideas there.
I started with finding out how much I was consuming calorie wise first. Then realized holy crap- 5500-7000 calories a day.
went to ~2000 calories a day, eating healthy(er) food, limiting the processed crap, and less ingredient foods.
Still have my beer and wine, my red meat and 'taters, and some grains/breads, just not daily or 3X a day.
Mediterranean diet/lifestyle helped me a lot.

Mash on it: hate to say it but that's your problem. If you think you can't do something then you can't. Anybody can do something they put their mind and effort to!!! Just my opinion. Not trying to start shit
The first week sucks but hey if you have the will to do something, anything can be accomplished even if your a rookie. It's how bad you want it and the whole 30 is the RIGHT/HEALTHY way of doing it. And after the 30 days you adjust slightly but keep the key fundamentals of eating right in your life.

X3 That!! My wife and I just finished the 30 day challenge (whole30) and it has definitely been a lifestyle changer for us! Ill admit that it was super hard (day 4 no carbs= I wanted to kill someone!) but towards the end you find that you really dont miss any of that crap anymore.
We now do about a 75/25, meaning 75% of our diet we follow the whole30. The only thing we really went back to was alcohol and cheese. Its kinda funny that now I prefer my cheeseburgers and sandwiches wrapped in lettuce, bread tastes like cardboard!

I'm already there- Lost 75lbs, I didn't fail.
Its been off for two years. But going from a crap diet to the whole 30 is a plan for failure in itself. people didn't get overweight in 30 days, sometimes it took years, and changing thier eating habits for the better takes a while too.

Mash on it: that is awesome you have lost that much weight. That's a big accomplishment and I am glad you didn't let yourself fail.
Now with the Whole 30, I am speaking from experience, I have had many co workers go from eating shitty ass food and being severely over weight and jumped right into the whole 30 and do great on it and they still continue today eating healthy. Like I said I am not taking crap on you what so ever just saying that you can succeed in anything you put your mind too. Obviously there are other things you need to check first before going full speed into working out or drastically changing your diet, go to the doctors and get a physical.
Ken also try the home workout called The Rack. You can get it at Target. It's a 90 day program and tells you exactly what to do each day and gives you a 90 day eating plan as well. I saw a big change in my physique and eating habits
Again, this doesn't work for everybody but if you dedicated into changing your life, u CAN do it with a little bit of hard work

KEN it seems as though you have gotten lots of good advice here, but let me throw another one at you. Dr. Michael Mosley has written a book that is available everywhere called The Fast Diet. Based on a lot of solid science, this method of eating has huge popularity in England, and it sounds like it might fit into your lifestyle as easily as it did mine. Basically you limit yourself to 2 nonconsecutive days out of every 5 to 600 calories a day. The other days you eat normally.
The science says that humans began eating when there was food, and often not eating for periods because there was not food. 5-600 calories a day is not really that painful to do and more importantly it is easy to remember with no real meal planning or special foods to purchase. I get through with a bunch of almonds and a few salads and chili from Wendy's when I am at work because it is handy but I 'm sure you could do the same thing wherever you are.
The book is small, I'm sure I paid less than $20 for it a couple years ago. The science is solid, the weight loss will happen, and it is an easy lifestyle to adapt especially if you are busy or in situations where you don't have time to plan out and shop for a specific menu. Just another route for you to consider that others have found helpful.
-
Damn, damn, damn, thanks for all the advice and info, and links. I'm on the wife's iPad, so when I get to an "actual" computer, I'll print everything out and start on my road to better health. Was a rough day at the hospital as Bella is on quarantine, and just now got to say goodnight to her, and now going to head home for a bit of sleep before work.
-
I was almost 295lbs and at 5'11" thst put me on the fat as a hog description.... couldn't run a hundred yards to save my life. stress is funny and people react to it differently ... for me..... I eat.
I've lost 30 lbs in 5 months..... no diet, no super exercise
plan.
I eat the same foods ( except I cut out ice cream by the bowl b4 I'd go to bed)
and have just cut down the amount I eat. it was hard. still a struggle, but getting the weight off is important to me
try different things..... a combination of suggestions I've read here could be the answer for you. there is no SET way to do it..... try something and give it a chance to see if it will work, then modify, go another direction. The
gym may work for some.... just walking.... bicycle etc. find what works for you.and good luck!!!
