I am looking for info on a motor build.
what i have so far is a complete turn key turbo 1915 that is carborated with a holley carb and it is set up as a draw thru system. Its got good empi heads on it as well. I have a MSD ignitiion in my garage taht will be going on this project as well. I found a TIMS fuel injection kit on craigslist that.
What my plan is- punch it out to at least a 2 liter and install fuel injection. my goal is 200hp.
any of you guys have any advice.

Should be a good time

Keep it small, big VW motors are hard to keep together when you go big cc's. We had a 1835 with a t3/t4 that made 253 at the tire. And I know of guys that had the 2276s and 2180s that would just have case problems. That's a big arm and a lot of power for a little case.. but they are fun. Have a quick one.. In high school we didn't get pulled over but a good talking to by a simi cop for doing a wheeling in the McDonald's parking lot in the bug we had with a 2276 with a pair of 48 IDAs. As we went up and carried it I saw him drive by and the only thing i could do was set it down and pull into the street and act normal. He pulled over a we drove by, we figure we were toast, NA he gave us a good talking to, and told us to take it home. The thing I think of is what he saw, the bottom of a VW bug coming out of the parking lot.
Dam slicks and 2300 pound clutch.
ha, from a smart ass phone is more like it..

ya i have a built 2276 in my buggy right now. I think i am going to try this 1915 turbo set up. I think my 2276 might be good for 160hp. its got super flow heads, good valve train, and dual webbers. It runs great just lacks some low end tork.
If i can get this 1915 above 200 i will be using this instead. This motor has worked over empi heads, h beam chevy rods, forged pistons and crank, nice cam and the T3 trubo.
I hear the case is the big problem with any high hp bug motor so i am just going to start with an aluminum super case and eliminate that right off the bat.
I should probably just go with an ecotech or a subi but the VWs are more fun. I want to whoop up on an ecotec with my vw powerplant. That is the plan
-
A 2276 isnt that big. With the good heads you have and a motor that works together. I would pull the cam in ypur 2276 check the compression and build that. The 1915 is a stock crank with big pistons. I have done my fair share of VW stuff and have heard all the rumors. I wouldn't go spend 800 on a case unless it was an AS41 case. Or a 3 piece scat case similar to a 356 porsche case. I would be willing to bet that your 2276 makes more than 160. I have a 2276 in my sand car and some big heads that will run my car just fine. I have a set of 48 dhla(delortos) im a weber guy but that what I had. The cases are fun unless you do nothing to them. Weld up behind #3 shuffle pin full flow and line bore you are good to go. There are a lot of guys running a 2440 that do just fine with a AS41 case
-
I am also in the process of building a turbo motor for my sand rail. I dont know what I am gonna build yet I have a few options with the parts i have sitting in my garage but I think I'm gonna stick with the 2110 instead of going bigger and build the 2275 or 2332 for the street car with 48 IDA's. I just got my heads back from Heads Up and the Turbo is being coated. All i need is a new set of pistons and cylinders and shes ready to go back together and make some HP's. the car is already a blast with the NA 2110 so i cant wait to see how much it wakes up with the new power plant.

As far as a sand rail go's I think the key is the trans. 4.56s with a good 2nd and 3rd is a best, and a 4 pinion diff , so u can use a turning brake,. We had that Turbo motor in a old school Johnny mid Eng frame. And it was fast, on flat ground. Like I said I think small CC VW with a Turbo is better than big with boost just because the case can't handle it. Sure a big money case will work but by then pull that shit ass VW and get an LS motor....200hp is cool don't spend more than 4-5k getting there if you plan on spending more I have an 4.8 ls that with a small cam will make 300+ HP and 2x tq. As a vw

Unless you have a bus box you are not going to get a 4.56 ring gear. If you are running a type one say in a mid engine like my brother or my jsc chassis im building eventually you will have the choice of a 3.88, 4.12, 4.37, 4.86. If you run a bus box you have 4.12, 4.56, 5.13 I think, and like a 5.47 or something huge. We have a baja with a 5.13 and it was way to short. We changed yhe ring gear and changed gears. A good turbo sand car tranny for a type one, is a 4.12 or 3.88 because they are stronger, then run a super beetle first because they are shorter, spend the money in a second gear like erco, run a short third like 1.65 and a short 4th like 1.31 short but fun. Like a sprint car
-
As far as a little cc motor. Well the smaller the cc the higher rpm you have to run to spin that turbo. Second the bigger the crank the more torque. You dont need to spin a vw turbo motor high rpm there is no need. The money and fun you want to have you wont make that much boost. Like 8-10 psi
-
I can save you money and effort. My cousin has a complete Mazzone car with a turboed injected 2386 for $4500. The car is disassembled which is why it is so cheap. It's complete and has a ton of badass parts!
-
Im not trying to create something expensive. I blew my trans at glamis on turkey day. So since my motor has to come out anyway i was thinking of making some adjustments. I also have this turbo 1915 that has a ton of good parts in it and i was wondering what motor i should go with. My big motor has great parts as well and just needs a new cam to bring the rpms down. My trans will be going to transaxel engineering sometime soon to get beefed up and some lower gears. Even with my 2276 i could never really use 4th. I could get it in 4th on the flats but the car does not have the suspension to go that fast so it was kind of useless.
In the sand with my 2276 i could not even pull 2nd gear up olds. It was annoying. I have the beast motor in the back and it would not hold 2nd gear up most hills. If i could keep the rpms high i think it would but like i said with whoops at the bottom of the hill i did not have the suspension travel to charge the hill.
So my original plan was to reduce compression, change cams, and turbo my 2276.
but now i think i am going to just decam the 2276 and lower the gear ratio in my trans and see what happens. this will allow me to get my car back on the trail asap.
In the mean time i will pull apart the turbo motor and have the machine shop do what they can to the case and reasseble the motor and drop it in my manx.
but if i assemble and dyno tune the turbo and it puts out over 200hp it will probably end up in my buggy.

I would have a trans built first. It sounds like your gears are WAYYYYY to tall. I run a 2276 with dual carbs in my 4 seat chenowth explorer and have no trouble duning in 3rd and 4th with a full load.
-
ya something is wrong then. I only have a two seater. My 2276 has all the goodies done to it and it still wont pull 2nd up the hill. I am getting the trans rebuilt now. Im working with jeff at transaxle engineering. He knows his shit when it comes to trannys. I guess the one i had in the car was built by trans work west or something like that. Anyway the turbo build is still going to happen. I think i am going to leave it as a 1915 and see how much boost i can shove in it. LOL.. I plan to set up the turbo motor with all the same fittings as my NA motor. that way i can swap them back and forth if needed.
I think my big problems in my car were the cam in my motor was too big.. ie built power at too high rpms and my trans was not geared right for off road. I think i will put the car back togther with the new trans and new cam first before i swap in this turbo powerplant. but nothing sounds cooler on a buggy than a blow off valve. lol

If you happen to have a motor laying around at the end of all this let me know, I'm looking for one for my manx :D
-
i always have vw motors going thru here. Do you want just a stock 1600 to get started?

I Like Jon's suggestion, Tony. remember the issues you had with "Aquaholic" before you had the pump done......which was the source of all that is evil in the world.
As far as buggy's, been 25 years since I messed with them back when Unc used to race. Back then, peeps were putting Toyota motors in and Unc STILL ruled in open classes with a 1600cc in ADRA competition.
Unc's thoughts, and still true even today was, "there is no replacement for displacement" works only on a drag strip. It's all about the setup.
Just an old Unc quote for ya! ;)

ya me breaking the trans started the whole thing. The trans is headed to the shop this week to get a nice desert trans built. i want the damn thing to be bullet proof. so i am building to hold an LS1. haha..
I am going to stick a different cam in my 2276 so that the usable rpm range is brought down a bit.
as for the turbo i am going to decam that as well. The guy before even stated the big cam he put in made it run like shit. I will also pull it apart mag and inspect everything line bore and flaten all surfaces, gusset the block where needed and then turn up the juice to see what she will do
-
Geezus Tony, you got it bad man. Not every machine you own needs to be turned up to KILL level dude. Everything you have would be hella fun with just a mild mod or two from where I stand. And I am loving what you are doing with the mini, that's uncharted territory for the most part.
How's the Stealth coming? >:D
-
the minis are awesome projects. i thought they would be mini projects as well but they are each a pretty big deal and are taking up a lot of time and money.
The 3000gt is running and driving fine. i just need to order the wide body kit and have some body work done. But since i dont really race on the pavement any more that thing is kind of on the back burner.
Ya sometime i wish i could leave well enough alone. but i cant help myself. when ever i break something i think to myself "well that was not strong enough so lets get a bigger better one and see how that goes".
My projects used to be manageable now they are a little out of hand. right now i have a manx, two mini boats, 2 dirt bikes, a dune buggy, and a porsche 917 kit car all ripped apart in my shop. I need to stick to doing one at a time.

Screw the VW and put a ecotec in there and call it done.... If it blows up $500 and you throw another one in.

I'm actually thinking something like a 1915, the car actually has a license and is streetable, so I'd like to make it legal...or as close as required to it :D
