Anybody ever heard of this? I'm new to owning a boat. well actually I got my own first boat last year and today I got a letter in mail about vessel property statement. Something about taxes. Any of you felt with this before? Is this like renewing the tags or something?
-
I got one as well this year after buying my boat new last year. Basically you have to pay luxury property taxes on boats every single year

Don't boats depreciate 99% after the first year and then climb back up in value at time of resale?
-
Ya mine is registered on California. So i gotta pay for what again?

California has a state luxury tax. A boat is a luxury in the state of California. So you have to pay taxes on your boat every year

Do you know how or what they base their price on?
-
Yup that's it"" my float is registered in Az. As a non resident. Just to avoid being jammed by ca high luxury tax"

They base it off of the purchase price of the item. In this case it's the price that you payed for the boat.

Yup even jet skis, had to pay it on my standups.

The only way I have found to get around it is if the vessel is gifted to you. I got my grandfathers boat after he died, it was gifted to me and I never had to pay luxury tax

Well how would they know how much I paid for it? Or how can I proven it was gifted

They get the pice when you register it. Filling out the pink slip there's a area that ask purchase price. That's where you'd also put gift. In riverside county once the boat value gets to a certain dollar amount you no longer have to pay the tax, also the tax should go down every year. Gooooo Cali! 👎

Ok cool. I think I had put like $300 or so since it was just the hull. And do I go to dmv and do this or do I send it the the adress the envelope came in which is my county's assessor recorder?
-

All I know if you don't pay it, they will come knocking on your door. They finally got me but the boat they were taxing got taken away before I paid it. Lol So they ended up taking away my tax return last year
-
So I'm a new boat owner and received the tax notice in the mail a month or so ago. I filled out the letter and sent it back to the county I paid 7500 for the boat. How much tax am I going to pay?

That statement is an assessment of taxes that will be done. I only had to fill it the year I purchased my boat, apparently it fell until there limit line for having to pay the tax. Because I've never receive it again.

What's the process of registering your boat in Arizona if I do not live there nor do I have a second residence there. My boat is stored in Blythe (California side). I would like to get away from paying this luxury tax on my boat that I bought last year
Sent from my iPhone using SoCal Jet Boats

From my understanding you only have to pay luxury tax on boats over 24 ft I have never had to pay and I had a 22 foot mini day

You have to go to their fish and wildlife office and pay out of state registration fees. Instead of $30 it's $230

It's the purchase price. Depending how much you paid for your boat will determine if you get taxed or not. Every county might be a little different, but I gotta pay for my 20'. Size doesn't matter in this case haha!

Well I'll be paying on about 50k, so that's why I need to get my boat registered in Arizona hahaha

what does the form look like? mine was so simple just some basic questions
-
All I gotta say is go pay it, don't let it get away from you. I'm still paying on a boat I don't own anymore. Balance is up around 2000.00

Reading this, I am so glad I left California a few years ago. I miss a lot of things about living there, but I think living here is much better.
They tried to garnish the kid's wages. He's in the Navy and was stationed in Monterey for a year and a half. He's now in Georgia (since Nov) and California was coming after him for his Mercedes and Harley registration. Said that they didn't care when he left, they wanted their money. He had to go through about 3 different ignorant fools before he got to the supervisor.
