Title: What do you guys think of this...
Post by: JARVIS on September 25, 2015, 04:35:30 PM
So I've got a line on these 70s steering wheels.
Can be made to work on our floats.
You choose wood and finish.

Thoughts?

Personally I'm not a fan of the stop sign look... but that's just me .

Totally appreciate the honesty.
I too have a different style I'd like to go for...more modern twist of old gear...
But I know there are some that like original looking stuff...
Just a thought.
Thanks again

Been looking for a nice wheel for my cruiser for a while ... and wood grain would be my choice.

Never seen one like that before. Did they actually put these in boats?
Kind of reminds me of a 70's side table with that shape.  :-\ Sorry not a fan.
 for trying something different though.

I could see something like this in an old school van with hexagon windows to match.  Not so much in a boat.

2 points for you.

These were originally for vans.

I have the capabilities to make a traditional wooden wheel. We can talk about it...

I'm into it.  Picked up material today.  12" diameter by 1.250 thick.  This will allow for a slight dish.  Don't want it to big to where I feel like I'm driving a bus and I don't need it so small that I can drive with handcuffs on.

I take it you're into the wood wheel...not the octogon looking wheel....correct?
Also, so you plan on machining a dish into that disc?

Yeah, looking for some wood projects.  I love the wood with brass fasteners.  I wanted it to be a little more than just cut from a piece of sheet.  I can't find the the picture of the one I really like.  It had pockets milled into the spokes, forming sort of a C-channel cross-section, but still has the round holes.

I think the octagon looks like a good way to wreck.  I wouldn't want it getting caught on my leg or something while high-speed maneuvering.

I do like the shape of the Momo flat bottom for ease of egress.

I like the yellow band indicating when the wheel is centered.  I will do this out of another species of wood, so that it stands out conspicuously.

Since I can cut that piece to anything I can imagine, the automotive wheel that I like the best is the Grant Challenger dual-plane.  Most other wheels I have seen are flimsy in comparison.

Looks cool....so that center with wood rim. And contrasting band to find center quickly.
Wheels are spinning in my head.....hey, anyone smell smoke?

Looking at the Momo, the black suede would be mahogany and the yellow leather at 12o'clock would be something different like purple heart or another contrasting wood.

These wheels look good on a classic cruiser.

My guess would be 1 of the Two options, they offer to coupe model, as well as the sedan...

They also have the one with the skull and horns on it off the 22 at an auction lot. It's pretty sick

So the general consensus is that the milled aluminum finger grips, even with wood on the front is a bad idea?

If so, do you feel that ANY aluminum showing around the perimeter is a bad idea?

I think that polished aluminum in avoidable areas would be cool. Maybe not at 10/2..

I think the half wood towards driver is better than all AL.
AL fingers I think would burn a bit...
If there's a band showing. ..between wood or rubber, etc. Would burn far less...if at all.
This is of course, my opinion. My only experience is with a solid AL wheel and a wood wheel with band of steel. Fwiw.
