« on: August 10, 2009, 09:06:39 AM »
Hello all, I just sold my truck  (2005 tacoma prerunner access cab 2.7 4cyllnder) i was pretty impressed that the 4banger pulled my 18footer... but time to upgrade. I'm looking into a 4x4 diesel but not sure which one yet  ??? Does anyone have some good/bad info for me? Any advice is appreciated  ;D

I never understood why people think they need a 3/4ton diesel rig to tow a little jet boat.  W/ the trailer, you're boat probably weighs what...4000lbs?  Maybe?

I use a V6 2WD tacoma to tow everything with a tongue on it.  I've towed my old racecars on heavy ass dual axle trailers, towed on a dolly, I've towed 2 or 3 different boats with it too.  I have no problem holding 75 or better up the hills with a trailer in tow in 6th gear, although I try to keep it around 65-70 most of the time.  I might get a 4WD tacoma next time to make it a bit easier to get up the ramp, but my little truck works fine.  My folks tow their boat (19ft outboard) with a 97 AWD ford Aerostar...and it does great.

Well I would rather have a diesel than my expedition because the fuel mileage would be much much better.  Could be a reason why so many people want a diesel.

My main reason I want a diesel is for the MPG, then i want to also make sure i have the power for any needs, and also be able to seat comfortably , plus during the cold months i go out to the desert to ride the other toys and would like to tow anything with no hesitation at all. I'm pretty sure the power is way more than what i need but i don't think more power isn't necessarily a bad thing...

Diesel equals durability. Plain and simple. Last much much longer and the high price to get into one will be offset by the benefit of the power and longevity of it. Just my opinion which is completely bias because I drive a huge F250 Power Stroke. Fuel mileage sucks. I get about 10 MPG no matter if I'm pulling my 4K lb boat, a 25K house, or just turning those big ass tires. Chicks dig it.

I got one word for you CUMMINS!!! That is the best engine out there. They last forever, get great fuel mileage (a friend hauls 18k pound horse trailer back & forth across U.S. with 18mpg average). I'm a die hard chevy guy, I love Camaros, Novas, & Vettes (I know, I know, I got a Ford in my boat). But when it comes to trucks, you can't beat the Cummins diesel. It took Dodge a long time to build a reliable truck to wrap around it but they did in my opinion. I drive an 05 Ram Hemi because it outpowered Ford and Chevy (and the new Hemis have even more power). I couldn't afford a diesel then but I could buy any truck right now, it would be a Ram 2500 with the Cummins. I worked for Dodge, Chevy, and Ford 2 years each so I've seen which trucks come through the service drive the most. The Cummins pretty much only came in for oil changes.

Thanks for the reply... Nice truck... is that the 6.0 or 7.3? I've been told that the 6.0s have issues and if i were to get into a ford to make sure its a 7.3. Do you know if that statement is correct?

the 6.0L had problems in the beginning '03 and early '04.  from what i have heard its was people reprogramming the chip and not keeping an eye on the right vitals.  if you buy from a ford dealership ask for the oasis report.  basically gives you a detailed record of what has been done to the truck i.e. recalls and repairs

Agreed, the 6.0 was only an issue early when they came out with it.
I had an 2005 6.0 Powerstroke and never had one issue.

But since I havent had a boat in five years(I know, horrible) I pulled my last two with a 1979 Ford F150 with a 351.

X2 on the 6.0. All the Ford guys tell me it had its problems early on, but mines an 06, not many problems at all of note. Running it in my F350. More truck than I wanted or need, but was a sweet deal, and seems to get better mileage than you guys are posting? Only really calculated it once at 19, towing to Mead. but I'm not running Earthmover Tires either.  >:D

Now I wouldn't be without it! Towed a boat twice over hill and dale to Kingman from Phoenix, set the cruise at 70, only guage that really moved was the boost guage. Only complaint is it's so tall it won't clear my garage (No lift either!), not that It could otherwise, with a boat and most of the parts to put 4 more together in there anyway, but would be nice to fit it in if I wanted too!

My first truck, honestly, was a 92 Dakota Club Cab V6! Truck worked real good, and really would be able to haul damn near anything we would do with it. I once hooked up to my old mans TD9 Dozer on his trailer with it, roughly 8500 lbs or so together, and pulled it pretty easily for about 5 miles to a new jobsite for him. Backroads, mind you, not highway speeds! lol!

Woulda bought a smaller truck, but wanted a full size bed and a cab big enough to camp in if necessary!

Besides, the kids or anyone else riding with me have room to be comfy as all real water is at least a 60 minute trek for me.

But how do you feel about the MPG are you better or worse than the diesels? I'm assuming you get a little less since you're working more but correct me if i'm wrong...

OK, but what does "ford" equal....(durability isn't the word I have in mind).

In 60K miles, I've had to replace the shifter knob in my toyota cuz the stitching started to come out.  I change the oil every 5K miles...

How many Ford 6.0 (sicko) diesels have eaten EGR valves and EGR coolers...resulting in engine failure?  Durable right?

Will any of you keep your trucks to the 300K - 400K mark?  I doubt it.  In which case, what is the concern with durability?

I gotta admit...The truck came with 3.73's in the "ass end" and still has 'em, along with the 35" tire's,so it's not all that great,BUT I can make it to my dad's in Willow Valley,Az. from my house in La Verne, about 248 miles, with about 3/4 tank, fully loaded(And I drive about 70 all the way).....I'm guessin'...totally guessin' about 14 mpg. Never recalibrated the speedo/odometer after the larger tire's,so i'm not to sure....but then again...I don't really care...When I'm ready to go to the River...I do what it takes! >:D ;D It's only money and ya only live once! ;D

I have an '05 F250 Super Duty Powerstroke crew....love it, would not trade it for five gas trucks... ;)

Pulling a 6500# boat up a 12% grade at 65 MPH while averaging better than 18 MPG with the air on and five people in the truck. My 5.7L gas Chevy would have needed CPR by the time we got to the top of the hill at 30 MPH in second gear...Oh yeah, while getting 8 MPG.

The only thing about the Diesel is the inconvenience of refeuling, The damn California F250 crews only hold 28 gal... :banghead:

Brain dead is all I have to say.  Mine now holds 68 gallons and regularly gets 20+ MPG if driven like an old man (70 MPH).

Another unsung plus, you literally cannot hear the engine running at 2000 RPM while on the freeway. ;)

I have had several gas trucks, 350 Chevy's, 454 Chevy's, 5.3 Chev, 460 Ford and a 360 MOPAR, you couldn't give any of them back to me...

Fixed it... :-\

djthicks-

I had an 07 Tacoma 4 door/4WD with the 4.0 V6, I loved it, it towed my boat just fine and just about everything else I hooked to it towed equally as good. I bought a 2008 Tundra and I have yet to meet the trailer, boat, car, ??? I can't tow with it, I love this truck, 18 MPG unloaded, about 14 towing. You should def. look at them.

I have an 07 F150 Supercrew with a 5.4. I love it, it's not the best on gas but whatcha gonna do? I don't have enough room at my hosue to park a Duty nor did I want to spend 45k on a truck.

My truck comfortably holds 4 people and will tow anything. It came with the towing package so it came stock with 3.73 gears and a bigger trans cooler. I can't even feel my 18 foot Hallett behind it.

I even used to tow my 92 Ranger PreRunner on a Carson dual axle flat bed trailer, all in the PreRunner and trailer wighed about 7k, and the F150 towed it just fine. (Electronic trailer brakes were needed tho)

I get about 14.7 around town and 12.5 when i'm towing.

Oh yeah and if you're into Chevy's they are doing 0% for 60 months right now or 3500 cash back, go get yourself a new truck brother, they are giving good quality shit away right now!
