Title: whats purpose for a dolly trailer?
Post by: JARVIS on September 20, 2014, 05:14:59 PM
so ive tried looking around....i see a many pics.  no explanation.  looks similar to a normal trailer with really small wheels and maybe narrower.
with those little wheels....doesnt look like you could do highway speed....safely.  not stating a fact, i have no idea what those little guys are rated for.

so whats the point of the dolly trailer?

I have friends that road tow on dolly trailers. But it's more so the boat will fit in an enclosed trailer.

so its just a small trailer that fits in a toy box or enclosed trailer?

allowing you to have your boat and trailer together.....hmm

Usually for race boats towed to the event in an enclosed trailer filled with gear and tools. Also they're super low on little gokart wheels so you don't have to do much to put the boat in the water.

makes total sense in that application.  just made me wonder after seeing a few pics of larger boats on dolly trailers.

thanks for the info gents!

Towed this home from Golden Shores to San Diego after we put some DOT tires on it.
I will admit I only drove 55 - 60 mph all the way home.

Cool float.

I wouldn't be surprised if the bearings get real caliente.... if you know what I mean....
Small wheel spinning real fast, even at 55.  If they can take the heat, cool.(lil funny intended ).  I thank you guys again for the replies.  I learn more everyday here...

The little pop up tent trailers run a small tire and those get towed around, hauling ass all day and night without any problems....

Exactly what everybody else said. I can tow my dolly just as far and any road trailer, and it tows much better. Also, it's so nice not to have too lean over fenders to work on the boat.

Last time I towed the boat from home to the river on the dolly I stoped right before the hill on the 10, bearings were I've cold ????!!!!🙀🐣👍🚤💨💦💦💦

Tushay!
I didn't realize pop up tent trailers had tiny golf cart wheels. now that i think about it....i have seen some pwc and small aluminum boat trailers with tiny wheels.
Anyhow ,  I'm not suggesting Dolly trailers not be used on roads, highways.
Merely asking for some info regarding them. Thanks for that.

Lots of people don't like the dolly trailers because of the wheel size and speed but the reality is, that wheel combo has been in service for YEARS without problems.

I don't understand while people would tow at 80 trying to get home, but sometimes you just have to get to the river  ;)

I converted my trailer to dolly this year.  I cut 17" off each axle.  My storage situation changed and my trailer was too wide to store where it's at now.  I've towed from Riverside to both Avi and Blythe several times this year with absolutely no problems.  I made sure to buy DOT rated tires, with a spare.  I don't want to try to find a dolly sized tire in Blythe.  Set the cruise at 62 and relax.  First couple trips I'd check the bearings for heat every time we stopped and they were always cool to the touch.

Maybe best of all is like Jake said, it makes working on the boat soooo much easier too!

The first time I'd seen it, I figured that's why it was done.
After my 15 seconds of racing, I'd definitely convert the next trailer.
