If it weren't for my having been a boat mechanic for the better part of my earlier life, I don't think I would even be allowed to have a boat...........

Warning: Kind of a threadjack coming . . . but I'm feeling a bit nostalgic this morning.
My Grandfather leased 600 acres from the government just south of Water Wheel (north of Blythe) from around 1938 to around 1980. Somewhere there are photos and 8mm movies of me, my sister and cousins being pulled around in a wagon because we are too young to walk on the rough diret roads of the ranch. Nearly 2 miles of riverfront and 600 acres to explore on foot or on dirt bike was a great way to spend my summer. Dad was a school teacher so we had all summer to spend at the river. Crazy thing was my parents can't swim and didn't boat. Until a family friend convinced my parents to go in half on a nearly new ski boat, 18 ft. Horizon SBC/Jacuzzi. My parents had a pool built about the same time cuz us kids were on the city swim team. I still can't believe the things my parents spent $$$ so that the kids could have a good time!
We stayed in a trailer that was 45 ft long but only 10ft. wide. Until an old cottonwood tree split in a storm and crushed it (with us in it at the time). After that we just tent camped for another 20 or so. Same spot, same boat, same core group of friends. Good times every time. Skunks, spiders, ants, snakes, storms, heat, wind, we camped through it all. Boated all the way up to Parker Dam many times. Opened and emptied a keg of beer one weekend with just 8 friends from high school. Watched my buddy eat his morning corn flakes with Bacardi after losing a bet. Had my first one night stand. Skied naked several times waving to the folks in Water Wheel. Ate a lot of shrooms. Skied more miles of glass than anyone ever has had a right to, hence the "handle" GlassCutter. 8) Watched my sister ski right up into the reeds when she was scoping out some hot guy. Got to ride in a blown Hemi Sanger hydro and a Hemi K boat. Ahhhh them's the dayz boys

Great stories guys! That is me riding shotgun in 1976. This is on the Parker strip at Sportsmans. My family bought two identical Southwind 18 in 1971. One was red, and the blue was my favorite. There was always a feud as to which was fastest. I hate to say it but the red one was. The blue had an LS-7 behind a stock Wj, but the red one had the right parts in the right places. Every year my Grandpa would pick me up and bring me over to his house. We would wash, wax, and prep for the summer. Then we would hook it on and go! Good times. Even to this day I still stop at the Carls Jr in Yucca Valley and get a Western Bacon Cheeseburger.
Even though I bought the Hondo back, I was actually holding out for a Southwind. I have always wanted one. I just didn't want an outstanding cruiser to slip through my fingers. If the right Southwind comes along, look out Hondo! Both boats are still in the family. The blue boat had a complete restoration including a modern style gel coat. The red boat is growing weeds through the bow.

My parents have always been river rats. They still laugh at stories of me strapped in a car seat that was just set on the seat if the flat bottom.
My parents were great skiers and I never get tired of hearing about their shenanigans.
My dad had many boats, but I have the best memories of the Spectra 20. If a yellow spectra 20 with a berk jet and BBF ever pops up for sale, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Anyhow, I'm happy to continue the family tradition.
