Been living on the Oregon Coast for more years than I care to think about...wind, rain...always between 49-65 degrees. Oregon has been good to live in, but the tax structure and cost of living here sucks. Thinking about retirement someday and where to go. I think the best place I have been in years was Mission Bay, San Diego...if all the other people would go somewhere else! Seems like it was always 75-80 there with only a light breeze. So, lets hear where you think the best place to be is. I want to use my boat, hike, ride my mountain or road bike, not too hot, but definately not cold. Somewhere with a good tax structure so I don't have to work asking people if they want fries with thier drink cause uncle sam took such a huge chunk.

I second that, especially San Luis Obispo or Atascadero/Templeton area. Paso is going ghetto, south county is already there.

How about TN. I moved here from San Diego about 5 years ago. Bought a brand new 3bd/ 2ba house for 80k, live 5 minutes from a huge lake, mountains(for biking)and there is no state income tax. Vehicle registration is 24 bucks a year for anything you own. A little hot and humid in the summer and pretty cold in the winter ( definately 4 seasons.) Gas is 2.69 right now.

Little word of advice if you wanna retire and live somewhere with a good climate year round look at spending some serious$$$ because face it everyone else wants to live there too...I couldn't say where a good place is I live in vegas, but its all I know! When my dad retired he actually moved to oregon and loved it...out here in vegas we got all of the above riding skiing/snowboarding and a big lake...and some gambling too!

Same here in the PHX area. nice thing about Casa Grande is it's outta the nutso traffic and brown cloud over Phoenix, and kinda laid back. I can be in the water in 45 minutes (until I find something closer, which I doubt exists), Sky harbor airport (PHX) in about 30, and Tucson in about 45 as well. And the cost of living isn't outta this world.

Good input. Never thought of TN. Got a buddy who grew up in Louisiann and Arkansas. He tells me there is beautiful country and cheap living but humidity can get crazy. We thought about mid Cali coast (drove through last fall and my wife loved it) but damn there are alot of people there and cost of living seems high. I spent several years in SF bay area and a bit of time in Simi Valley but dont' think I would ever live there. Not been to Arizona, but am interested. We plan a visit there next fall. We hired a guy from Phoenix and every time I talked to him when he was in the hiring process he told me it was over 100...that is too freaking hot! Of course he got up here and his wife lasted one winter and they moved back...quite on his last day of training which cost us a ton of money. So, the search continues. Unless I hit the lottery, then I am going to buy a cool place in a bout a dozen climates and travel between them.

Only gets over 100 2 months outta the year, 3 sometimes. Worse in Phoenix Proper, (Meaning PHX and all its suburbs, like Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale), becuase of all the concrete and asphalt. Out where I'm at, not bad at all, really, we've broke 100 3-4 times, or so, so far where PHX has been in the hundreds for over a month straight.
Anyway, just my thoughts on it. (What the hell am I doing this for? the LAST thing I want is MORE SNOWBIRDS!!!!!)

Good buddy of mine bought his retirement placein Kingman many years ago...no regrets. I'd like to check out Payson, Williams, etc.

Family moved to AZ (Paradise Valley) in my latter teen years. Liked it cause was like a third world country for Women! So if your single and retired, not a bad place too be.
Myself, want to have full time residence in Canada actually. Like the Pac West during the spring/summer months and looking at away to significantly reduce my taxes! Would like a winter place central Cali with easy few hours drive into L.A and or Vegas.

Central Cali is going to put you 3-4 hours from LA depending on where you end up and where in LA you want to go. 7 hrs to Vegas from there. But either arent that bad of a drive. Made both drives many, many times.

At 12+ hrs driving then I'll consider flying. Commercial air travel sucks these days. Like driving. Border is kinda a hassle these days though. Kinda enjoying Canada but not sure about winter yet, assuming like Seattle and Portland, must move south cause that really sucks!
Van 19 drinking age even at going on 37 young college chicks are hitting on me big time! So maybe be warm enough for winter! ;D

Looked funny when I re-read it, 3-4 hrs from Cental Cali to LA and 7 hours from Central Cali to Vegas. Didnt mean to make it sound like you had to drive down to LA to get to Vegas.
