Title: Why jet boats??
Post by: AA/Paul on January 10, 2008, 08:50:50 AM
I was asked why jets when i/o are faster, out boards better wt/per HP, etc.
For me was easy..1  cheaper, 2   I could work on the motors,3  simple, 4   hardly anything for a rookie boater to tear up, 4  if I do trash something it's cheaper to fix than the i/o eggbeater . ::)
Why did everyone else choose jets?

Jets chose me! Actually a jet was my first boat and it looked cool and fast so I bought it.

I think that covers it. My only I/O experiance was a 21' searay cuddy, and the omc blew up every time I looked at it. And my ol man had a carrera with a 225 johnson that could barely pull me out of the water. Not to mention they don't call em 2 smokes for nothing. I had a lot of fun in my old v drive k boat, but I got tired of wearin a kidney belt every time I went out.

Its what i was born into....

Also, props scare me.....I've seen a few fatal prop accidents as a kid and I can remember them as if it happened yesterday.

I/O's are great for the guy trying to keep up with the Jones, but I wanted something with personality.  It had to be a jet or v-drive and I needed a back seat, so....

For me? Simple:

1) Rooster Tails

2) Harder launch; quicker hole shot; quicker planing than a prop

3) Safer around people in the water (no external moving parts to become a liability)

Simple -- cuz chicks dig em  ;D

Or in my case cuz the wife wanted to keep the kids safe.  ::)

Although I disagree with the "cheaper" part, why I like jets is simple...

They are HOTRODS on the water!

Right there pal, do you want to drag race, or be like an outboard and take a few years for top speed ;)

jets are safe for the kid ;D I'm a outboard guy but I'm going back to a jet, so my kid and I can wakeboard(it's just safer and the wife can drive it ;D)

A v-drive planes way quicker than any jet drive.
Title: Re: Why jet boats??
Post by: SLCKREG on January 10, 2008, 03:17:33 PM
I've had both HotRod. I don't know if I agree with that or not, my k boat would cavitate if I mashed it out of the hole.

I'm outboards way quicker than my jet  ;D  And it shown only get quicker with more tuning.

Since I've only been in 1 v-drive... but it had ~ 500 HP and I've ridden in a jet with ~500 HP and the v-drive was considerably quicker out of the hole. The jet would win in a race though (same 2 boats).
Title: Re: Why jet boats??
Post by: pw_Tony on January 10, 2008, 04:03:21 PM
I've only ridden in 2 jets, but probably about 10 outboards, racing and just cruising.

And compared to either of them a jet planes and gets to top speed ALOT sooner that the prop boats. I like them too, just what I have experienced.

And don't v-drives in the 1/4mile take alot longer to get to top speed than a jet, which usually does it in half track?(not being a smartass, just curious)
Title: Re: Why jet boats??
Post by: Brad @ SCJB on January 10, 2008, 04:09:26 PM
yes, in a 1/4 mile drag, a jet will beat it out of the hole, but a v-drive will catch it on the long run.

They are fast enough to have a good time (scare the girls), but not too fast to really get hurt (unless you go crazy).  As far as props, I have spent the last ten years fishing with the old man in a 21' skeeter bass boat w/ a 200 V-Max and will say this:
I am confident that most jets will beat it out of the hole, but as soon as that old fishing boat gets on plane, I have never seen a jet be able to keep up with it. (and a lot have tried)

i can honestly say i have probably shied away from more races with damn bass boats than anything-------not that my boat is fast or anything like that, its just the embarrasment factor of getting my ass handed to me by something with a trolling motor ;D ;D

usually go to parker or apache lake, nobody has seen the boat on the lake in its present state, it has been apart for almost 2yrs now being painted and gone through, (see "its home" thread in projects)  only went to pleasant once and it was a bad experience, to many little rich kids in their big boats that don't know crap and don't give a shit, you are right up the street from me though, we ride a speedworld alot and  a relative lives out at patton/159th ave

Why did everyone else choose jets?

Simple: it's the MUSCLE BOAT.

As with the muscle car, there's simply a cool  8) factor with a jet; if I had a car project, it would be one of the muscle cars of the 60's/70's, not a rice burner; IMO if you put anything next to a jet boat it's like putting a '68 Vette next to a Datsun; there just ain't no comparison.

Simple to fix ,rig and relatively easy for the average guy to own ,operate and repair.Easy to drive and relatively safe sans some "power off" and low speed issues . In the early 70s while dating, Rhonda took me to the Naciemento lake to hang with her family . Rhondas Dad ,(my FIL) (an adventurous mechanic) had rigged a beast of a boat with a 440 Mopar police interceptor and a Berkely "packajet". One ride I was Hooked and have been ever since. In the 30 past years I've owned and still own lots of different boats (I have a V-drive flat and V drive cruiser) but my fascination & passion is still with Jets .Are they faster than OBs or V-drive ???? Certainly not economical but I still get a thrill out of every one I work on, test drive, own or even watch. To me buying and restoring a vintage Jet is alot like a guy that buys and restores a 442 or Chevelle muscle car  Nuff said just my 02 Tom

My first Jet circa 1976 (note no ##s)

I got mine cuz it was cheaper that most , Had the looks I was goin for . It is very reminisent of the 60's 70's cars . They look cool , and they are in no way economical , very easy to work on , bare bones . Very spartan . There is an inosence (sp?) that goes with gettin in your toy and enjoying it , prop or jet .

I've had 4 boats (1 jet and 3 V-drives). MY '79 Bahner was by far the funnest boat I've had so far. Ran nearly 83 mph and would seat 4 confortably.
Loud, fast and fun, that's why I had a jet.
