After 10 years of boating today was my worst day ever ..... I have blown motors on the river, dead batteries , half sunk , but today takes the cake .
I just had my jet rebuilt , and motor and added a place diverter ...... Needless to say I was Dying to test my boat before Parker easter weekend . Ironically I stopped by Dales Speed shop on my way to the lake and ordered my Msd 6al digital ignition i have been wanting . Little did I know that would be the prime suspect in my WORST BOAT DAY EVER . I was going to silverwood lake which is about 15 minutes from my house . It was windy at home but I decided to chance it and give her a go . When my 7 year old son and my two buddies arrived we were greeted with glassy water and 3 other fishing boats on the lake . PERFECT ..... Boat fires right up , and we proceed to leave the no wake zone . As soon as I give her some throttle she dies like some one pulled the coil wire ..... almost at 2000 rpm everytime . So as we are floating towards some nice rocks , I figure out it has no spark so I bypassed the Ballast resistor and she fires right up in the nick of time . So instead of heading back to the trailer to lick my wounds , I have to see how much roost my place diverter throws ... Too much testosterone , no common sense . So I figure one jaunt around the lake and call it a day ........ not reallly . Everything is working perfect until the coil dies in the middle of the lake . Keep in mind it is 630 now and the lake is empty . So I look for my spare coil I usually carry ....... I took it out of my tool box for Glamis season DAMMIT . No problem I will call the ranger . They say we are on our way. I have a beer and contemplate my parts list for the next day . If any one lives in the High Desert or has been to Silverwood , Late afternoon Heavy gail force winds are the norm . And yes the wind did start . And to the Rock DAM it did push us . After 5 frantic calls to the ranger for a ETA we reached the dam. Alls I could think of is the 8000 Dollars I put into the boat the last 6 months And my son freaking out . With all of us pushing off the dam the ranger finally showed and towed me in . Thankfully no damage to the hull . And I got her home ...... Dont know why a 6 month old MSD ballast resistor went out , But it did and I am sure the coil went from overiding the resistor ...... I hope my next trip is better than todays .

sorry to hear about your "worst day"... but i spent today at my desk looking at boats while you were out enjoying yours. even your worst day is better than my best working day.

You got off stupid easy...
What coil are you trying to run with the MSD?
Your ballast resistor may have just been old...Happens a lot, The "made in China" sticker has nothing to do with it...
In all seriousness, it could have been way worse, thank Triton and Poseidon as soon as you can....They were easy on you.... :sly:

i dont have the MSD yet . But I was running a MSD coil Blaster 2....... Dont know what I am going to run now . ........ I know people have has way worse stories than mine ..... But that was my personal worst experience . I am thankful though I didnt lose the boat .

I hope you and your son were wearing life jackets.
The boat can be replace, people can't be replaced.

Hell thats just an adventure. Funny when you look back on them. Like when I got towed in by a sailboat, or when we popped the pop off plate under the blower and Chromey sitting on the bow hyjacked two iranian jet skiers to pull us in.

I forgot Terry being rescued by a sailboat and the Taliban....... Some funny stories for sure! And I thought I had some funny stories. ;)
First off, if you're running an MSD 6AL, why the resister to begin with? Would be new to me to see that on a digital ignition, but then I only run Mallory sooo........ :sly:

I didnt have the MSD yet .... I ordered it and picked up today . I was just running a pertronix kit in my unilite Distributor and a MSD coil . Today I will be installing the MSD6AL and will be throwing the Ballast resistor as far as I can :banghead:

I gots 1 for ya.lol Several easters ago....I tow my boat to a lake near me called yuba. Me and my 2 room mates spent 150 bucks at the store and all we bought was 3 steaks...a box of doughnuts......and the rest was beer. The night we get there it real friggin cold. Ice on the inside of the camper windows. Next mornin with one of the most epic hangovers of my drinking career my buddy dunks me in the water bright and early. Fire up the old flat bottom k boat and look back to see I froze the chit out of both logs :banghead:  I yell at my buddy but it was too late he was gone. So I think its a good idea to drive the mile to our camp :screwy: Once there we pull both logs and run them to the nearest small town called nephi....where somehow we proceeded to find the only guy there who knows how to weld aluminum  45 min back to the lake and one they go. Hit the key and get the anchor rope :banghead:  At that point all I could think was phuck....there is no way I am diving in that water with my head splitting like a cord of firewood. I decide my 455 olds must be stronger than that rope so I hit he key and floor it :screwy: Now I am reayy scewed  We managed to push the trailer in the lake by hand....and pull it and the boat out with a chain. Takes me at least 2 phuckin hours to cut that rope off. By the time we got all that done the sun was going down :banghead:  Awwwww good times...good times.lol Come on guys....lets hear some more.lol

How about spending 35 K on a jet boat made by a company that makes snowmobiles then searching the internet for jet boat websites, tripping across this one, finding out what a real jet boat is, feeling kind of sad that I don't and maybe never will have a big block chevy reving behind me. :(

Thanks Ray, I do feel welocome but I am staring at ice on the lakes Northern Canada is a little behind in the weather department. But with a little luck she will be wet soon (oh yeah the boat might be in the water too!!!)

Put all the fancy ignition away and buy a HEI single wire distrubutor, they run great pretty much bullet proof. I put all msd stuff aside and went HEI runs great. Now if you are runing a high power race engine then all the HD equipment is needed.

Learning curve-
Easter weekend 2003
First 454 (+.030), stock gen V non adjustable heads, kept bending pushrods.
Then had a set of 781's rebuilt, machinist said they would be ready on wed, then thurs, then fri. am, they were ready at 2:30 pm fri, some 60 miles away, 5:00 heads ready to be put on, 6:00 heads torqued down, headers and intake held on with a few bolts and left for the river...
Sat. 5:00 am bolting down intake, headers, drop in dizzy, finish plumbing and wiring in the parking lot of the Edgewater. 7:30 am -launch at Big bend and procede to break in new cam, on the river. 9:00 - beach the boat, get ski rope, flag and vest for brother to ski. Pulled brother on ski, heard a strange squeek from the motor, then the squeek went away.
Later that day, while gps'ing the new mill, # 5 & 6 rod bearings decided to spin, at 5500 rpm (oh sh*t), lost power, floating down casino row, tried to get to shore, only slammed into one pole, (new scar) and was towed in by an inflateable? R.I.B. to a private launch, guarded by a Barney Fife security guard, questioning our intentions and demanding I.D. (thats in the truck). Finally, ended up hiking to the Riverside casino taxi, rode across river, called my brother to get my truck to that private boat launch, Barney almost would'nt let him in.
Missed the next 8 weekends building a new mill.
Nobody injured, no harm, no foul...

I got one 2007 for my Bachelor party just got my first jet boat 18' installed a small chevy I had sitting around did one test trip before taking it all the way from the so bay to Havasu. Got 3 rooms on the beach at the Nautical Inn launched the boat had a good day cruizing around (1st time in Havasu). I was drinking all day so my brother was driving, we decided to beach the boat on the beach in front of our rooms. Started partying and left the boat on the beach all night. No one told me you can't leave a small jet boat on the beach. (before I found this site) So I woke up with a hangover in the morning walked out to the boat to find a bath tub of floating empty beer cans and a bunch of people standing around it . So after I yelled at all my buddys for not checking on the boat. We got all the trash cans out of the rooms took out all the interior and starting bailing water as fast as we could to get it floating and off the beach. Rented a pontoon boat towed it to the launch where it sat on the trailer for the rest of the trip.
My Worst boat day ever.......
