idling for a couple minutes is bad once a month? o.o
that's the first time I've ever heard that..

Bottom line is you never want to run that pump without water. It uses water for lubrication.

I thought that's what the zerk was for...guess I've been wrong for the last 20 years :screwy:

this is a debate that will never be solved.
personally, i have run my pump out of the water many times - never had an issue (knock on wood)
i know other people who have chewed up wear rings because of it.
some people say never do it, others say its ok, but dont rev it to the sky or run it for a long time.
its all up to your personal preference.

The grease you pump in the zerk does nothing for the impeller and wear ring. Just trying to help you having to not rebuild your pump over something that could have been prevented. Carry on......

I've been told a Berkeley is safer to run out of water than a dominator... By Jack McClure. But no jet pump likes being ran dry.

Berkley web site says it is fine. Besides if it breaks/burns up/ "or touches down" then I can justify upgrade to my better half, then again it isnt to hard to disconnect is it? :screwy: :beer:

I'm with Ralph, however I fire it for less than 10 seconds if it has been sitting for a while. (hasn't been run since Dec. 12th)
I wont be breaking in a cam again, on the trailer. I learned the hard way. (River works great for cam break-in :thumbup:)

I have read and searched on this subject and no one ever agrees. How ever an old neighbor of mine worked for Berkley in the 70-80's and he claims to have broken in many a motors on the trailer with no problems hooked up. He claimed "if the impeller has enough room to wiggle and wipe out the wear ring it was time for a rebuild anyways." But even he suggested to me that while running on the trailer run a hose hook up that feeds the pump and motor through the water pick up in the boat and to stick another hose into the steering nozzle and crank it.
Myself, I do what he suggests but never run longer than a few mins and try to hose out the pump before I fire it. Only time I have ever fired a jet boat dry is at the gas station after I fill the tanks and its just on and off to make sure it runs.

not that im an expert or anything but i have run my pump out of water to tune my motor and will continue to do so. i just make sure i have my hose connected up and water running thur it.
