Title: Topock, Jack Smith, and Pirates Cove area of the river question
Post by: TheJasonMurphy on June 22, 2016, 12:40:37 PM
I haven't boated in this section of the river in over 15 years.... I usually stay between the casinos and avi. but looking to try something new.

I recently purchased a miller jet boat.

My questions are is it cool to boat down this way with a 19 foot jet, or will I be ran over by the 30 foot boats. Is the river deep and or shallow in this area of the river,  is there sandy beaches in this area. etc....
any feedback is much appreciated.

thank you for your help!

Yes on the Miller

Yes

no

Yes, and Yes

Some.

Its a ways. Think Gas. Think Open headers for several hours at a time.  :screwy:

FYI: Avi to Topock is nearly 30 miles (River Mile 233 to RM 260) ONE WAY

Is a cool area to Cruze but from avi long trip in are style boats. Best to launch from jack smith and Cruze down. Plenty deep and are beaches with sand. If you plan on going down river and haven't been down that way in awhile devils elbow is a no wake zone now!

x3 on launching from Jack Smith. From JS to Pirates is a nice cruise and Topock gorge is one of my favorite places on the river. My wife's for sure! Most of the "Big" boats are coming up from Havasu so you'll see more of them when you get close to Topock66 and Pirates. Even then they're really not that big of a deal.

Launch at Jack smith and head towards the gorge... Ive never had an issue but ive been told that Fish and Game is not to open header friendly.

We usually launch at jack smith cruise into the gorge, and before you make your first right turn there are some nice beaches over there

The check points are usually holiday weekends , I've been caught up in there when I had jet skis.  They will nit pick on things.  Got me for an expired fire extinguisher .  But the purpose of it is Mainly for overloaded boats, underage drinkers and drunks behind the wheel.

If your going to hang out at pirates you need to be there by no later then 1030ish on Saturday and probably Sunday.  It gets busy quick with the big boats coming  up from havasu.  I was at pirates last weekend , Saturday we launched at around 10 and 3/4ths of the Chanel was full of boats , by noon , it looked like the 405 frwy

That is no joke^^^  I pulled into pirates from Laughlin during spring break, parked right at the bar no one was there, went to leave around noon and the whole channel was full of floating pussy palaces, huge boats.  Tried to do Topock gorge but turned around, it was just too gnarly with all the boats in my 18 footer!  Got back to willow valley and it was much more chill.

Sounds about rt , it's usually 1 dude with 5+ girls or a boat of about 10 dudes.

How many of us secretly wish we had the pussy palace?! But somehow we know we would end up with a hot dog cart. That's probably why we stick with the super reliable jet boat. 😢😔😭😧😦😯😞
