We use a chain with a turn buckle forward of the floater on the rivers where the ramps are sketchy. Just hook up the chain, leave the bar off, pull the boat up the ram and take the chain off, attach the floater and put the chain back on and tighten the turnbuckle... Easy peasy.
The floater just keeps the boat from going forward, not really backward. I have also used a small Harrington chain winch on customers boats... Works great. If you make the bar too short, it can flip over ripping the eye out of the hull... (Ask me how I know)...
