Title: Empty trailer pics NEEDED !
Post by: 2savage4you on September 25, 2007, 03:14:31 PM
I am in the process of repairing a tandem axle trailer, The trailer my boat was on, was a  single. Now i want to see how to set it up for my boat. It had some dried out 2x6's on it but should i go with 2x4's and make them longer? the 2x6's were short and only in the back.

I will post some pics of what is and what it was. Maybe this will give some better clues.

But if you guy's have some hidden pics of tandem axle trailers,  post em ;D

ill go get some pics.

The tandems that I've seen have a pair of  10 to 12 foot 2 X 6's "in the center" and two 5 or 6 foot 2 X 4's off to the sides.

The only pic I could find...

Here is the trailer for my cousins 16 foot boat that we are just finishing up.....it just has 2 5 1/2 foot 2x6 bunks ....they were previously 5 foot, but we wanted to extend it another 6 inches so the transom wasn't hanging off the edge which i was told was one of the causing factors for hook. Don't quote me on that....but to add 6 more inches, figured it couldn't hurt.

I assumed you could see where the bunks mount and that would be good enough. The brush strokes are visible from about one foot away (eye from the trailer). Like I said before it all depends on how good you want it to turn out. I did mine like that because when it's on the trailer it's either in my back yard or the launch ramp so I didn't care too much about it.

How's this? It belongs to Jetaholic...

The bunks looked just like that one.  ::)

It's too dark for me to take some pics of the different set-ups that I have. What set-up is on your trailer now?

Too dark here too.  I'll take some photos in the morning and show you the mess this is.  I can show you the damage that was caused and my temporary fix too.

Different styles of floater bars/bow attachment points to the trailer.

This is the style that most people seem to like. This type requires a bar running down the center of the trailer. This style allows the bow of the boat to go several inches side to side on the trailer, not a good thing in my opinion. The floater bar is adjustable on the trailer which allows you to put the bow (or the stern) wherever you want it from front to back. Notice how it had to be bent to clear the bow's entry.
[attachimg=#]

Same style, just a little different. The piece of wood is just holding up the end for the picture. Same "features" as the above floater bar.
[attachimg=#]

This style is my personal favorite for a jet boat. The Newcastle beer bottle (courtesy marcsrollin) is there to hold up the end for the picture. The bow isn't allowed to move side to side. This style is non-adjustable.
[attachimg=#]

And lastly, the family boat  ;D  This is adjustable and allows the bow (or stern) to be set wherever you want it on the trailer. This is the easiest style to use in heavy current (river) conditions. The bow is not allowed any side to side movement. A lot of people seem to consider this style to be ugly. (The bitch in the picture is my G/F's!)

Wow Rod thanks for the hook up on the pics.   The floater bar was gonna be my next question but you beat me to it ;D   Right now i got the Ugly style on it and was thinking about making a floater bar.

Do they still make floater bars and sell them, or is it only sold on the trailer?

How about some pics of fender supports? i got some weird looking ones. Looks home made but then again its from the seventie's.

I will post them here in a bit. I think they are UGLY as hell, i really want something cool looking not chrome either (beerjet) ;D

Oh and Newcastle, thats some tasty beer, Making me thirsty Marc.

The float bar on my trailer is like the second one pictured here and the problem I have is that the pin takes all the abuse when hitting rough spots in the road.  I've had to replace the pin after almost every trip because the spring hoop will get broken or the pin will be bent.
I think I'm going to build a float bar like the first on pictured that uses the bar to limit movement.

I think everyone has different taistes, my taiste is towards that floater bar are, number 1: it's a flockin' trailer, number 2: someone is going to steal that thing is you leave it overnite at the AVI or similar place, and lastly number 3: I can't afford to keep the P.O.S. boat running so how am I going to pay for that floater bar?  ;D

I think all of the floater bars put stress directly on that pin, the only one that doesn't is the "family boat's" which puts the stress on the hook.

...
I've got to make a change!

Kind of odd, the floater bar keeps the boat from going forward, I wonder why the "bumper" is there?

...

Yep, but you're going to need some heat on it to keep from over-stressing the metal though.

One other thing about floater bars... Marc was pulling my boat out of the water (top pic of the four that I posted) with my truck (stickshift/manual trans.) and he kind of let the clutch out too quick combined with too much gas and the boat lifted the floater bar almost enough to make the floater bar upside down which would have really flocked things up. The "family boat's" hook-up is the only one where it firmly places the boat on the trailer.

sounds like what happened to us in havasu with marcs boat...floater bar flipped as we pulled it out....didnt notice it until we were whiping it down.....back of the boat was hangin off the back of the trailer like 3 feet  :o ...a type of safty cable would prevent that.

Ok guy's how a bout some help on these fenders ? Should i leave them the way they are? and just put carpet over them. I think they are ugly anyone else see fenders like that before?

Ok just to clarify not the fenders but the crap behind them, the metal that been riveted together and i even think the tires are rubbing on it.

Maybe i need wider fenders? Hey Rod you got some ;D I mean you got everything else J/K ;D

Looks killer. Is that "fork" looking piece for the "trailer eyelet" under the bow? What the hell is that "trailer eyelet" called? I've got to be missing something here (all jokes aside), what stops the boat from sliding forward?

Are you talking about the horizontal rollers (on/at the keel) or the vertical rollers found on a lot of fishing boats?

A bow stop goes there....i just ordered a new one.......looks like this:

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.overtons.com%2Fassets%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Fmedium%2F20606_M1.jpg&hash=51b997e281a165cc191e8cb82235f62b35e415e7)

hes talkin about one of these:

(https://www.socaljetboats.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.overtons.com%2Fassets%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Fmedium%2F74195_M1.jpg&hash=4162e9b70e8640030511073e0e791bcdaa654a70)

I wouldnt waste your money on it.....if you think about it...your trailer is at an angle and your boat is level on the water....it wont touch that keel roller at the transom until the boat comes out of the water....and at that point, if youre not center on the bunks, its not going to fix itself with that roller.....if its a must have item to you, put it as a front roller that will guide the bow in....but that still doesnt make sence.

i just went with the cheapy black rubber ones...didnt even bother upgrading to polyurethane.....as rod says "its just a trailer"  ;)
