Trailer Bearings Brakes and Tires
« on: April 30, 2012, 11:20:10 AM »
I've had a few boats lately and I'll tell you what, every one of them has needed bearings. Yea, they got me to the water and back but it's a ticking time bomb. It's REALLY  a pain in the ass but a HELL of a lot easier in the driveway than it would be half way to the river. Also I've found slight variations in seals and races, so check check check. For my bearings there are two seals, one is .03 bigger on the ID. Could be why my brakes were packed FULL of grease. My last two trailers had brakes, neither worked. I just rebuilt wheel cylinders, bled em and away we go. The last thing I'd like to remind you all of is TIRES. I just replaced mine and found they were 17 yrs old!! They had good tread and little rock hard tits still on em but again a ticking time bomb, Right Brandon?  He just borrowed my spare at the end of last season, had a blow out and damn near took the fender off the trailer, 10-15 miles from the house. NOW lets get thoose Harbor freight running lights off and some good ones installed and I should have a nice trailer. Oh gotta check bunk screws next time a lauch this POS.

I believe most trailer tire manufacturers recommend replacing the every 3 yrs.  Probly a scam, but that does point out that tread depth doesn't really mean much when it comes to trying to gauge lifespan.
And probably even more important -- they are not designed to sustain 70 mph (or more) for long trips across hot desert roads.  You guys know who you are.   >:D

Question:  How do determine if the bearings are good, assuming they are all still in place and seemingly tight in the cage?  Or are they so cheap, as long as you take them out to grease them, you might as well replace them?

Ya I am replacing the tires on my trailer before the Avi trip. Hell they look like new, but they are 06 and 07 tires. time to replace :banghead: Better safe than sorry. Another thing I do is take "2" spares mounted and ready to go. Had a trip a while back and blew a tire when I got to park Moabi, went to neeedles to get a replacement, cause I didn't want to go home without a spare, and a 150 bucks later I was on my way :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:  Dam I was pissed, makes it worse, I work for a tire company :screwy:

just clean and look at the bearings, mine were obvious. You can just jack it up and spin the wheel and listen or ride in the boat and listen. I like to clean em all out, inspect and replace as necassery then repack with the same marine grease thats in my gun. Bearing Buddies, cant say enough, Google their site. They are more than just an easy way to add grease, watch the inside of your hubs. They keep the hub pressurized so when you drive three hundred miles and back yer trailer into the creek they dont take a big ole drink cooling off. They will actualy draw in moisture and WILL rust in all that grease.

While we are on the subject of tires, don’t forget to check the valve stems. My brother just had 4 new tires put on his trailer before our last desert trip and Friday night getting ready to leave he asks me’’ do you think this will make it’’? I take one look at it and pull it out of the rim by hand.  It’s a lot easier and safer to change it now than on the side of the road. As for bearings, let’s just say don’t trust the person you bought your boat from, I had a bearing weld itself to the spindle then the whole tire, hub combo came off at 70mph on my first boat, first trip out. ‘’it’s ready to go bro’’ my ass…..

Disk brakes for the trailer, not bad at all. I ordered my wheel bearings at this place. The first place I called was $100, the second $200 and this place was fitty and change.

I disagree Ray, you can clearly see the cracking in the tread area.

It definately is not a sidewall issue, I am not wanting to change my tires cause they look like new, but I have too. I know what they little shits go thru. The belt sep is not a good thing, with age and the heat, it kills tires, no matter it be a car , trk, or boat trailer

Word to the wise:
Had the compressor out today to air up the trucks after washing. Figured I'd hit the boat trailer since I never have time scrambling to get out of town whenever I go.. found a 10" bubble in one rear tire. Glad its found now.
