What Would You Do

So here's the deal . . . planned on going to Blythe for the 4th. I just got the boat tuned up last weekend and took the family out to Elsinore yesterday. Coming home we stop for food and we hear what we think is a flat tire. Upon inspection the trailer has barfed a wheel bearing and a Bearing Buddy. The trailer is a 35 yr old Roadrunner. When I take it apart today I find what I think is a metric sized brake line running into the backing plate and the inner bearing says Made in Japan. On the other side of the trailer I take it apart to get the numbers fo replace and they are Timken. Soooo are these Japanese axles or what?
Do I buy the backing plate assemblies and hope the threads for the brakes match up? Do I replace the entire axle? Do I do bearings on both axles or just the one BECAUSE I have very little time between now and Friday morning when we had planned to leave.
Thank God for the SCJB kharma cuz if this had happened to or from Parker two weeks ago! All opinions welcome and appreciated.

i dont know much about trailers, but, if it was me i would inspect the spindal (sp?) and if it had any damage i would replace the hole axle. now i might just say f, it and replace it any way for peace of mind.

IMO 99% of these things are the same, or at least close enough, I say go grab the complete backing plate package (pretty inexpensive really) and the bearing kits with the seal, (they measure the shaft, in and out bearing) unless someone put a queer axle under it, this should work like a champ (now where did I hear that before?)

BTW these typically use 1960's Ford Mustang rear brake shoes (9" rear end models), but an odd ass one sided slave cyl..

Do I really care if the spindle is banged up on the taper, no where near where the bearings ride?

Crewchief - no I made no calls today, I wanted to have the parts in hand so I knew what I needed to buy. The braking assemblies are in Corona where I work and Mira Loma ain't too far out of the way if they have the axles. Thanks for the advice.

The spindle should be pretty much smooth from the inside to the thread area, with the taper. If you go to Bearing Buddy's web site they have the sizes as if you miced them. I think you should check the bearing races inside the hub. If they are smooth, you may only need the bearings and the rear seal kit.

About the only thing I can say about narfed up spindles, is just make sure the bearing fits semi snug and square, also would consider replacing the axle if there was any "blueing" of the steel, these are hardened spindles, so taking away some temper by overheating could prove dangerous, but I have seen them pretty bad and still be fine.

That is more than likely a Bearing Buddy axle.

For me when I lost a bearing on my trailer and did mess up the tapered part of the spindle I could have gotten away with just putting a new hub on which would have to been ordered. The trailer is a 76. The trailer company I dealt with splained to me that the hubs were not readily available. For about 80 bucks more they would make me a brand new axle with hubs and U bolts, the whole nine yards, and that I would be able to get hubs anywhere, if I needed to. So new axel it was. Just my .02

My old trailer we went to swap out the bearings - and found somewhere along the way redneck repairs had been made. Not one of the bearings or hubs were the same, and there was even some custom made shim to get another bearing to fit. I was going to order an entire axle assy, but the trailer took care of itself (wrecked). Good luck, may it be easier on you than it was on me.
