455 Olds Refresh
« on: September 15, 2022, 06:53:55 PM »
Well after the next trip the Olds is getting pulled out? I have a shop that I?m taking it to already but would like some opinions since I?ve been waiting to have the motor done for almost 5 years. Things I know are done? bored 40 over, big valve C heads original from late 60s, air gap intake manifold, total hours as of right now 100 on it going to put a few more in October. What was told to me from original owner?. Bored 40 over rebuilt with a stroker kit?. So my question is I have roughly 5k to put it? already have 1900 towards new roller cam matched to my pump which is a AA aggressor, valve job, lifters and springs? what would y?all do with the rest? I run a edelbrock 800 carb? I?m going with roller rockers to already? should I go with higher compression pistons? I?m for sure going to listen what the builder says but would like to hear other opinions so I can ask the good questions. Right now I am spinning the AA to 5000rpm reliably?.and the pump is fresh with only 10 hours on it? I would like to gain anywhere from 500 to 700 rpm don?t know if that is too much to ask? well maybe we can start a thing that says ditch the olds sell it and put a BBC in it lol

Going off of the Olds article, Do you know what Olds oiling mods have been done?

Another thing from the article, is the divider between the center exhaust ports on the heads. It doesn?t meet flush with the header flange and has a gap from port to port. They fill it in and grind it to have a nice flat area for the exhaust to hook up to.

I don?t think he gets on here to much anymore, but 69 Kona had a pretty good running Olds. Maybe send a pm and see if you can pick his brain.

Honestly no idea what mods have been done except the original owner said there is restrictors in it? oil pressure stays good and only running a regular oil pan of 5 quarts. After a long run the pressure drops to about 25 to 30 but comes back up.

Have you figured out what changes/modifications are going to be made?

Are you planning on getting a larger oil pan?

Well what has been discussed is head work or go aluminum heads? going to go with a msd distributor? hydraulic roller cam, lifters, rockers?. Check compression leak down? modify oil pan for more capacity? may or may not change pistons? dyno tune it? and once dyno has a done have the impeller cut to match if needed. I let the builder know my budget and what I would like to get to? so we shall see what direction we go on heads either port what I currently have and update valves and stuff but may be cheaper to go aftermarket route.

I?m still n disbelief in n how the bolts were loose?.. and they were not loose because I run it hard or what ever? they were just not put in and torque correctly

Oh the pump was burnt out even though it was recently rebuilt? long story short is MPD has gone thru it and detailed it? my impeller that had only 25 total hours after rebuild was shot? so waiting on dyno sheet to cut new impeller to the motor? mpd also machine the diverter to mess with tuning nozzles? can?t wait to get it all back together.

I had the same issue with my pump from that shop I won?t name. Not trying to start fires here. I really don?t care anymore. Here is my story. Spent a large sum of money for an energizer pump. Towed my boat all the way up there. Left it. Drive all the way back to get it. I really liked the family and the job they did. First run, the pump was ruined. Didn?t even run the boat hard. My friend has his newborn baby on-board. When I called the shop I was accused of running the pump dry for the cause of failure. My option given was to pull it out, ship it to him, then go from there. Something didn?t seem right so I had a different shop go through it instead. Upon disassembly discovered that my pump didn?t have the AT energizer kit. It had his knock off parts in it and was assembled with tolerances too tight. Could only re-use the impeller shaft after one run. That?s it. Also, the transition inside the suction was horrendous Jacuzzi YJ. It wasn?t filled or smoothed at all.

Yeah same here ? pretty much same thing happened to me? and my other bud? but oh well all I can say is it is being done right ? can?t wait to see how well it performs with all the work going into the pump and motor. Once I get everything back I will post pictures and videos of it on the water..

Best of luck to you. My boat absolutely hauled ass after the pump was built right. Kind of funny regarding your Olds motor parts. If you need parts, shops and people charge top dollar. If you have parts, you practically have to give them away. I was never able to get my Olds to last. Went through 5 of them. I also was the guy that got your Hawaiian sold. It?s in a good home now. Has a new motor and lots of work done. My co worker bought it.

Thank you! I loved that boat but it was either put the money into the day cruiser for motor work or into my Mantra? had to go with the Mantra it means too much to me ?the day cruiser ran great for a handful of trips!

Went and picked up the pump today and went by the shop and seen the pistons they came in this week.

Just waiting on the main caps for the machine work to be done. The olds is no longer going to be a 2 bolt it will be a 4 bolt so at least that will add strength to the block.
