While I am totally against this type of strong arm tactic, this is why HOA neighborhood suck balls! He asked them for permission, they denied him based on the rules of the HOA that he knowingly agreed to abide by. As much as it sucks, it's not a matter of patriotism, it's a simple matter of somebody breaking a rule and having to face consequences for it.

BTW- I'm a proud American, I fly my flag every single day. I just don't have to have anyone's permission to do so.

Goddam soccer moms. That's the problem and the majority of most HOA governing boards. Thank gawd every day I do not have one, but my last house involved more tha one heated discussion with a "Board Member", only to be followed up on by a visit a week or so later and "conversation" with a HUSBAND(s) of a "Board Member".

Never backed down, but still, kinda reminds me of the old "protection" rackets running when I was a kid in Youngstown, Ohio. Remarkeable! Yet people buy into those devlopments.

Live and learn. But those people need a good spanking in the pocketbook, IMO.

HOA's are great for things such as my neighbor cant paint his house like the Mexican flag or park 8 cars in his front yard. But telling someone who fought and defended the freedoms of ours and other nations that he cant fly this flag in his yard is plain UNAMERICAN!

one of the lines in the articles reads "but Barfoot's neighbors are split over the issue. " The Neighbors that oppose it should get on a plane and move to Iran, China or N Korea for a while! Maybe then they will have a true appreciation of what that flag stands for!

They should salute him everyday for his service. Not screw with him for his contribution to OUR freedom. Screw that. HOAs suck! Just plain sick! I bet they hate guns too.

I agree with you Skip, I just can't stand the fact this old guy who has given up everything for his country (3X) could not get a "you are absolutely allowed to have a flagpole in your front yard, rules be damned" ruling from these fake selfish pieces of sh!t who probably think they are doing their civic duty, not to be morbid, but seriously, he's 90, how long do you think they will have to "put up" with a flagpole?, which I must say is very tastefully done.

My grandad would have had one put in all of the board members front yards just to prove a point, he was a tough old SOB....RIP

Has anyone got me some e-mail addy's yet?, I was serious about that, I will have these communist pieces of sh!t saluting the flag with him in the morning.... :( :( :( :(

I would love to get a copy of the restrictions.  I bet you it says nowhere that you cannot fly the flag and does not explicitly exclude flagpoles.  That would put it into a catagory that would require a vote i.e. opinion. I wonder how many federal offences are in there restrictions  which puts evey board member in a positssion to be arrested?

My old boss wanted to add to his garage but according to the restrictions it went beyond the "avaerage setback" on the block. He fought it and found out that the restrictions also banned blacks and hispanics from living there unless they were in "servant's quarters".  The lawyer simply asked if they enforce ALL the rules.  The issue went away faster speeding bullet.

While I agree on the principle that he should be allowed to fly his flag, he did move into the community knowing the rules.  He is a decorated military officer and as such he knows the importance of following orders and enforcing regulations for the good order of the unit.  Did he move there intending to prove a point and violate this rule, or did he simply fail to read the rules before moving in.  He asked permission which demonstrates that he knew it was prohibited, so he doesn't really have a legal leg to stand on.  Does he get to break the rule because he is old, a vet, or is it because he received the CMH?  And if he gets a free pass on breaking this rule where is the line that he can't cross?  And before you think I'm un-American, I've got 27 years in the military and still going.  It is a matter of knowing what right looks like and he chose to break a rule knowing he was in the wrong but feeling that his wants were greater than the wants of the many in his community.  He should have simply put as big a pole off his house as he could and petitioned the association members to amend the bylaws.  I do wish him luck as the flag is probably very important to him.  But if that is all he is living for, he needs more help than legal services can provide.

Happened to leave my HOA community the opposite way I normally do the other day and noticed that one of my neighbors has a 20' flag pole in his front yard flying ol' glory.

Amazing how one community board can think its an eye sore and others dont....

SnoC653,

First off, thank you for your years of service

I have numerous family members that served, and I am by no means saying this old man should be able to break the rules, I am however saying he should have the backing to be able to change them...Which is the point of the whole thing, he went to the board to ask for an exception to the (IMHO) rediculous rule, they turned him down flat. There will be another ruling on Friday, lawyers were involved, even if he loses legally, these POS board members should be ashamed of themselves to allow this to go as far as it has.

I am an American that bleeds red white and blue, you mess with the stripes, you'll see stars..... I wanted to go into the Navy right out of high school with my cousin, my height (6'6") made it too difficult and there were only a few places I could actually go (Carrier or Battleship)...I chickened out, always regreted it.

I don't think this flagpole issue is all he has, he is just passionate about fighting for what's right as far as the proper handling of Old Glory, may she fly with pride forever. Which is why I asked about the community park if there was one... 8)

The more I read into this, the more pissed off I get    ...There is no rule in the official HOA guidlines forbidding flagpoles of any kind....The ruling was because "it was not asthetically pleasing", so put that in your footlocker..... :banghead: All this was based on a majority (of asshats) decision...How un American is that, they are probably not even American citizens.

Only an anti American uneducated dipshit would deny the hero his last honoring of his country...google it and I gurantee you will see my side...They didn't allow it because it does not "blend in", well, i'll tell you what, it would if every resident put one up... :sly:

I can tell you this, if I was his neighbor, i would do just that (put one up)... :sly:

honestly how could an american flag not be appealing to an american... :screwy: i dont get it...really this guy has fought 3 wars and he is just a good ol boy how could you deprive him really? honestly i dont see any other issues other then he's proud to be an american, and i think that is friggen cool...it probably makes his day to put that flag up and take it down...i always think exceptions could be made...especially when it comes to someone that is as decorated as him...i really dislike associations they can almost tell you how to run your life asking permission for this and that, and damn you own the piece of land or do you? out here when everyone was "patriotic" after 9-11 and wanted to fly the flag alot of the associations made people take their flags down...i thought it was total bs then, and i think it is now...i hope he gets to keep his flag-pole

Take your flag down and paint your house red white and blue with the stripes and stars, then a new roof in a flag shingle pattern,.Bet the HOA and GOOD Neibors would be proud to see that flag hanging from a bunch of welded up drive shafts than to screw with him again. While at it how about a few fox holes along side the road and maybe a old army jeep in the flower bed,and a couple of rusty cannons at the drive. Sounds like a bunch of people that are on a power trip, always got there way,and need something to keep them in the spotlight at all times..Ballon boy, white house crashers ,HOA. All looking for for a spot on the news.Hope the HOA gets the same outcome as the rest.YOU HAVE A GREAT SUPPORT BASE hang in there .

WW II Battleship sailor tells Obama to shape up or ship out !

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii

for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes

all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body,

he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now.

He dictated this letter  to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

Dear President Obama,

My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year.  People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate.  Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.

So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

I can't figure out what country you are the president of.

You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:

             " We're no longer a Christian nation"

" America is arrogant" - (Your wife even

announced to the world,"America is mean-

spirited. " Please tell her to try preaching

that nonsense to 23 generations of our

war dead buried all over the globe who

died for no other reason than to free a

whole lot of strangers from tyranny and

                 hopelessness.)

I'd say shame on the both of you, but I don't think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you.  To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.

After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals."

Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British?  Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War?  I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.

I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination.  You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

Shape up and start acting like an American.  If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue.  You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.

And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight?  You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing.  I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son.  Do your job.  When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him.  But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out..  The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.

You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy.  That's not our greatest threat.  Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.

And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

Sincerely,

Harold B. Estes

When a 95 year old hero of the "the Greatest Generation"

stands up and speaks out like this, I think we owe it

to him to send his words to as many Americans as

we can.

Lets not.  Why should we disgrace our uniform?  While Obama may be the president (hell we still don't know that he is a legal citizen), lets not confuse being the constitutional "Commander in Chief" with being a soldier.  If Mr. Obama were to dawn a military uniform of any fashion, I fear the repercussions within the branch who's uniform he wore would be thousands of troops refusing to wear their uniforms again.  He may be the Commander but he most assuredly does not Lead our nation's military.

I am glad the flagpole and flag gets to remain.  Now if we could just all the people that do fly the flag to do so in accordance with the constitution and the law, let alone raise and lower it to honor days of National mourning.
