Thinking about putting one together...anybody here ever built their own?
-
Yeap built 3 so far s ate spikes and the third was a noveske 20 inch free float sniper style. Just sucks to get parts now cause of the ban scare people are charging an ATM and A&g for stuff
-
I bought a couple of receivers before all recent shootings and ban talk, I was going to get parts a little at a time when I had the extra cash. I gave up. Cant find parts anywhere for a fair price (if you can find them in stock at all) and most suppliers I've talked to don't have any idea when they will get parts. A friend of mine just sold a basic bushmaster (legally) for over double what he paid for it, and there were people fighting over it.

Great I will do that if I run into any issues

I got a lower, assembled upper, then a magpul lower parts kit. Assembled it in about 15 minutes on my coffee table while watching YouTube vids as a guide. It's not a build... It's assembling. If you wanna build something do an AK!

Built my own XM-177 machine gun before the updated Machine Gun law in 1982. 10" barrel, a little different (needed an expansion chamber in the flash hider I hadda make), but it ain't rocket science. Typically, they go together like assembling an MPC Model car.
AK? Never built. Bought mine as is (expensive as that was), but maintaining? AK rules! ;)

always fun putting them together, just a suggestion though, wear eye protection. I have a damaged cornea from a firing pin spring from a non AR. Retainer bar broke, spring launched off, ricocheted off of a shelf and hit my eye. Hope to be building a pair of 1911s here soon. I say building since I'll be cnc'ing the frames and slides.
-
1911s are tough from what I hear. Well, not as tough with cnc. The ak had a Virgin barrel, had to make the receiver, and did a couple other things to be Cali legal. It cost about 600 to do.
I've got about 800 into my AR.
Next build is a few 10-22's.
80% receivers from tactical machining if the hysteria dies down.
-
Like sandeggo said, it's more assembling than building. Just accumulate all your parts and it's complete within 30 mins. I just finished my 2nd one last night and can't wait to break it in. Do you have an idea of what you want to use it for? My first was the typical carbine length covered in Magpul furniture just to say I could do it but I built my 2nd to work in competition 3gun, the options are almost limitless I guess. If you have any questions just ask.

1911's aren't tough. I've built a couple (Not a 1911 fan), but they need some extra 911 when doing so, like lapping the slide to the frame, maybe a little extra machine work etc. My favorite was building my S&W 4566 from a raw Performance Center (4506-4) frame and slide! Needle files to clean up the rough machine work by hand, a Dremel to make the ejector slot....THAT was fun! But a perfect weapon with night sights that has never once jammed? Priceless! ;)

What about us guys that want some stuff that goes boom to put it lightly that live in ca

Built the one pictured for 500... putting a 10.5 together now as well a 300blkout(not sure on barrel yet). Dipping some parts in gambler/rebel flag graphics... 80% Lowers are going for around 40-50 in milspec raw 7075 an the class is bout 30 to mil. Stay away from the 6061 "equivalent" lowers as they will break/damage an end mil. They usually have a "C" embossed on the area where the handle goes. Check out some vids of 300 blkout for shorter barrels. Combines the best of 556/762 an still retains the ar platform just changing barrel/muzzle. Found best price on ammo from cheaper than dirt at .60 rd.

What do you finish the hydro graphics with? Do you clear coat them and bake it after dipping? I've been told that if done the right way hydro will ultimately tighten tolerances on the receivers. Or without sealing the graphic it won't last very long from the handling.

Far from a toy as I've never seen a 5yr old at a crap table... but your comment leads me to believe your a liberal. Non taken btw
Hauls b,
Its a process an had the choice of gloss or satin clr... went with gloss to make it pop(air dry). Proper curing time is 10+ days. You can handle it within an hour but the longer it sets, the stronger it will be before assembly. I have skulls on my other one an is solid/strong.
-
Nope not a liberal, but I have seen a 5 year with similar firearm...

That must be a horrible parent to involve a 5yr old in gambling...

Again not passing judgement to each there own. For me I'd not want to make the package more appealing to whimsical to youth.

Thats why I went with an adult theme like gambling.

Is this a dip process? What does this cost for both receivers and float tube? We do this type of application at work but on a large scale, about the size of a small lap pool! We don't have a very large selection of graphics so this could be a cool option.
-
mydipkit.com once their click on shopping... this will show you options. I bought the entry kit plus an extra different pattern. Its a good idea to test a small piece an learn the technique. Water temp is crucial.

My upper was blk anodized... You must scuff it up good then use a auto (real good) acid etching primer first. The etch primer in the kit didn't stick at all. Once I primed them, I used the kit base coat. Made sure to let the primer/base to dry complete overnight (its dry to touch in a minute). If I had a heated paint booth woulda been faster.
