Title: Buying an 88 commander
Post by: OC.Hockey.Legend on March 12, 2017, 09:12:24 AM
So I'm curious.  This boat has a good gel coat, Good interior, rebuilt Berkley pump with hydraulic place diverter and it's an open bow 21'.  The engine is a 454 BBC and it's been tuned.  All the hydraulic lines have been replaced as well as as drive and pump lines. The guy is asking $7500.  Is that a good price for the boat or am I being ripped off?

yup I agree" pics would help. Mine is an 07 and it's a lil heavier than most but it is sturdy. When your on Mohave and the wind picks up  and starts the water white capping".  It's good to be sturdy" I have seen other boats not be so lucky JMO. Physical inspection and if it is truly solid and you feel she"s the one for you, chew on that price and see if you can get it a little lower and Seal the deal. Side note Commander is in Corona so parts and support is available. If you do make her yours pm me , I have out sourced parts for mine and was able to save some money which is always good. 👍 good luck with your inspection. Hope it  works out.

If this is the one in OC he originally had it for 7500. Price was dropped to 5000. I called on it he said he was waiting on some else this was over a week ago. Looks like the ad has been pulled today. So that might be a bargaining chip.

Yeah I saw that ad. I asked the guy about it and he said it was a scam. It made sense because there were no other pictures posted and his contact info from the original post was not on that one. It was also flagged for fraud. Plus it was in an entirely different city than where I picked the boat up from. The boat is in pretty good condition for being nearly 30 years old. The vinyl upholstery is a little cracked and the carpet needs to be replaced. Other than that the engine runs great and the pump was rebuilt as well. It has a hydraulic place diverter that had the lines replaced. He also replaced the drive line and throttle cable.  All the dials work and it purrs like a kitten.  I felt super comfortable doing business with this guy because he's a family man like I am and he was super straightforward about everything. He had his pink slips in hand and was really cool about everything. I didn't get the sense that I was being ripped off. I just wanted to check to see what you guys thought. Here are some pictures for you guys to see:

Let me know what you think!

Cheers

Great boat, especially for your first. I grew up on an 88 commander, lots of great memories and learning. It was mentioned above, not built for big waves. They ride low for sure. Nice boat
