Wait for changing carburetor?

Good evening I have been thinking about upgrading my carb from what I currently have which is a 800 cfm edelbrock avs2. It runs very good and easy on gas but I feel I have more top end that I?m losing with this carb. I have been looking at the AED 750. I already called AED and that is what they recommend. Now my question is this? end of season I am going to pull the motor and have it re cam and top end done I may change pistons as well. So should I wait till after I have the motor done since everything runs great as is right now?

I would keep it the way it is for know, plans always change on an engine build, you might end up with a tunnel ram or a blower, just sayin

I would keep it the way it is for know, plans always change on an engine build, you might end up with a tunnel ram or a blower, just sayin

Very true? my goal is to spin about 5300 to 5500 rpm and not put a strain on the olds so we shall see how that goes.. a blower would be super cool but in reality I won?t be able to put serious power in it for about 5 years? so the olds has held up for the past 5 a little refresh will get me to the next 5 year mark.

I would just enjoy it, ?If it ain?t broke??.
The money and effort to make a jet boat go faster get to a point where there isn?t a lot of gain unless you go full out super build. Especially with an Olds and Jacuzzi jet. I figure you know all this and your goal is very realistic. Just wanted to throw it out there.
What oiling mods do you have on your Olds?

If anything, maybe get a Holley 850 double pumper and tune it up to see if you notice a difference.
I remember reading Greg Shoemaker?s column in Hot Boat magazine. He said jet boats love cfm.

Honestly don?t know what mods have been done internally and for heads they are original c heads no work done to them. Oil pan is a stock car pan so roughly 6 quarts of oil. The original owner mentioned that mods were done to the block and stroked as well as 40 over? only thing I have verified is bored 40 over nothing else. That?s why end of the year going to have it gone thru a little? it?s been a super solid reliable motor so far and really like to keep it that way. When I?m cruising I stay around 3000 rpm and that is where I like to keep it but the motor will twelfth really loves running 4000 to 4200 it really smooths out

Some of the guys have done this mod themselves. The Olds article gives the exact measurements of the external drain back and where to put bungs in the oil pan. All this helps with higher RPM running for Olds.

The gentleman that I purchased the heads said that was done and the original owner sad the block drain backs were enlarged but I have no external drain backs? but we will all know for sure later this year? thankfully I have had no oil pressure issues

but.... I agree with the others don't mess with it till you're ready to tear it down. Maybe buy the carb (and other stuff) for the last run and see what/if anything changes. I wouldn't think going down to a 750 will help your top end, you'll need more CFM and flow thru the heads to get a big change.

When MPD did my pump I gained 800rpm with no other changes.

I may try the Demon 850 again, the 750 runs awesome and saves fuel but still we always want more. The biggest issue for me is tuning the carb for idle and max rpm. I just can't figure it out, even though it's simple changes. In reality I need heads and a cam to make the little extra power we're looking for. My setup is tapping out at 5500 - 65mph, but as you know it's always FULL SEND!

Yes yes you are always full send? maybe this year I will cruise at 3800 rpm instead of 3000 to some what keep up with you. I don?t think my motor will last 2 miles wot? if it could I would try to find the gumball rally of jet boats coast to coast hahahaha?

That is a big gain just having your pump done. There is so much benefit in having a tight,  efficient pump and a lighter hull.
Did they change the impeller cut?

Yeah Jack changed it some. Don't recall now, sold the boat and all the paper work. It was a Jacuzzi WJ Mini-Day cruiser BBC468 was only getting 4200 RPM 44mph. After MPD work 5000 RPM 50mph

Wife wanted to go faster so we sold it and built the sanger, and of course she wants to go faster again.... 65mph currently but crazy porpoise at low speed so like Joe said FULL SEND all the time. The oil cooler is working great!
