Just throught id throw this out there for any interested. Ive been an operator for 8 years now and its a good career with great benefits. The union only takes application for apprenticeship once every 2 years. You can pick one up in person during business hours only on wednesday and only for the rest of February so theres really only a few days left to grab one. The wages for apprentices start at or above $20/hr and thats around 50% of journeyman wage.
Heres a link to the locations to grab an app(all locations except pasadena will hand out app)
http://www.oefunds.org/local12.htm (http://www.oefunds.org/local12.htm)
Heres the info for the union hall im out of
Redlands
1647 West Lugonia
Redlands, CA 92374
(909) 307-8700
(909) 307-5800 Fax
You can call that number and ask for imformation about apprenticeship.AND REMEMBER ITS ONLY FOR THE REMAINING WEDNESDAYS IN FEBRUARY OF 2014 AND YOU MUST PICK UP THE APP IN PERSON.
If you have any questions feel free to ask or pm me
Good luck, Ryan

Keith, is it required for a person to posses or the ability to posses a cdl for this type of job? what if a person just wants to apply to the heavy equipment mechanic program?

And what keith is saying is true, it is a very cut throat industry and you have to make your own way. Nothing will be handed to you. I have worked for Security Paving and currently work for Las Vegas Paving and have found my place there. Good luck guys.

No, I didn't rhino...but...I also live in northwest Washington for the time being while I finish school for diesel tech. I lived in Temple City CA for 21 years and are finally looking to move back in the area. I've also been looking at local 428 out of phoenix because I have family in Prescott. My goal is to work on the equipment, both unions have mechanic apprenticeship programs. I wont be done with school till spring 2016...right around the time both #12 and #428 will be accepting apps again.. ;) However, I cant get a CDL so I'm wondering if Im just wasting my time with the union gig...I know I can still work for CAT, or Deere at a repair facility so I have other avenues if need be..

I think you would be okay as a mechanic as most of the ones ive seen drive the big f750's. If you wanted to be a fueler/oiler that would be a different story as you would need a cdl with hazmat.
-
The local 12 apprenticeship would have covered the cost of the cdl and loaned you a truck to do your ttest in.
-
Stoked I got the heads up on this!
-
were you able to grab an app and get the ball rollin??
-
You can be a diesel mechanic in the union at my work. We hire constantly. BNSF.

Just check out bnsf.com I don't have the guy's number anymore but we hire ex military as priority. You won't even need any VA help.
