Title: Made WHERE ???
Post by: propless on September 20, 2010, 07:52:04 PM
So today I was pulling the heads off an 98 Mustang (stupid little V6 POS, NOT MINE).  After I was done I cleaned them up a bit so they didnt make a big mess in my car on the way to the machine shop.  Looking at them a bit and what do I see cast into them under the valvecovers, Made in MEXICO !!  :banghead: :banghead:  So much for buy American.  >:(

BTW. those heads are crap, the material is soooo soft that when I was marking them with a screwdriver, it made a HUGE deep gouge in them.  Must be some aluminum/pot metal alloy (cast from the crap they sweep up off the floor).  :screwy:

Even though its just a stupid little grocery getter V6, it was sad and made my Ford blue blood turn a bit less blue.  :'(

Why should an American company with sales all over the world, only make cars in the most expensive place in the world to do so?   If the unions were not guaranteeing $40/hr to push brooms and clean toilets in Detroit, they might not have to, but reality says building here makes them uncompetitive price wise.  Robots do most of the work building cars nowadays anyway.   History is cyclical.  Every society evolves from agrarian to craftsman to manufacturing to developer of new technology.   We now leave manufacturing to China, India, Brazil, Korea etc. as it is too expensive and environmentally challenging to do it here any longer.  Let others do it so that we can concentrate on suppling the world with new technology that can be developed few other places.  That is the key to staying ahead of the rest.  We did it most recently with the internet and personal computing.  Now we need to focus on what is next.

And you can count on Obama to be focused like a laser beam on the problem.   ;D   What could go wrong?

Why ??  Its called QUALITY !!  You can develop the best and newest technology ever imagined, but when you send it to some crap country to be made all you end up with is a very technical POS that wont work or last.  And a hundred cheaper copies of it, that they sell for half of what they charge you to make yours.

Cars are no longer "built" in just one country.   Nowadays automobiles are "assembled" in one place, from parts outsourced all over the world.  The U.S. developed electronics like TV and radio and microwave ovens first but we no longer make any of those things.  The whole world buys Japanese and Chinese electronics and have no complaints.  There are no American TV mfgs. anymore.   Dude, we invented computers but most of the components come from overseas too and that is relatively new tech to the world.   It sucks if we need the mfg. capacity for wartime, but you can't fight progress.  We need to become the cutting edge of research toward a renewable energy.   No matter how much we can build, if we run out of affordable oil, everything comes to a stop.  Petroleum cannot continue to be sucked out of the ground fast enough to feed the worlds engines much further into the future.
You can't fight the cycle, as a country we either inovate and develop a completely new technology or product, that can be obtained no where else.  Or we can longer lay claim to the most powerful country in the world.   And the truth is we are just as flat ass broke as every other country out there, most people just don't know it yet.

sorry, rant off, drunk ON

Who do you suppose is the more consciencious worker?   The Mexican who has an indoor, air conditioned, nice working conditions job that pays better than most or these guys who know the UAW will back their every mistake with bulldog lawyers?

I'm not going to argue with you about the UAW.

But if there going to out source the parts, why not send the work to a company right here in this country that can use the work.  It makes NO sense to me to send work to other countries when there are struggling companies right here in this country that could do the job (and would be happy for the work).  Not to mention all the unemployed AMERICANS that would like to have that job.  If your plan for the evolution of this society is correct "Every society evolves from agrarian to craftsman to manufacturing to developer of new technology".  Than Mexico better start building a border fence of there own because the unemployed manufacturing class in the country is going to be swimmin the river.

Support your country and buy American products, if you can find one.  :'(

Simple answer:  with all the red tape, industrial emissions regs, insurance, taxes, etc.....it's almost  impossible to produce anything here for a halfway reasonable price.  Nobody could afford to purchase the cars.  China has very few regs, which is why it's cheap to manufacture there.....same with Mexico and other less developed countries.   Soon it will be India and Egypt.

I get into these kinds of "discussions" all of the time... :-\

I like it when talking about products made or "grown" in other countries and talking about Mexican migrant workers, I personally have little to no issue with the migrant worker thing, but it's when they say that "Americans" WONT do the work.....I call complete and total BS on that part of it. I have seen these so called "migrant" workers operating a GPS guided $700,000 Caterpillar tractor and things like carpentry, give me a break... :banghead:  I know I am supposed to be "tolerant" and all, but where is the line?

Personally a cylinder head cast in Mexico does not surprise me at all, when I was still working for Johnson Controls literally none of there new control components are made here and even fewer are even made by Johnson Controls, all made in Canada or Mexico BTW, but it's an "American" company  :sly:....Really? So if we buy it and find out it's made in Jalisco, we supposed to be proud that it was made by an American company...No offense, but I would rather toss it in the trash and find an American made part that does the same job, unfortunately, there are none....

The computer is made in Mexico with Chinese components  :screwy: , the seats I believe are Canadian as is the body parts (all of them) and the interior pieces (door panels and dashes) are made by Johnson Controls....In Mexico.

The only positive (if you can call it that) is that some of the money stays here in the states and not offshore.

I can go on for an hour, but I don't think my heart can take it... :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:

The biggest problem is NOT the UAW, the biggest is all the corrupt politicians and CEO's and CFO's. It's all smoke and mirrors, but the mirrors are smeared with bullshit... ;D

Pat, you're not too far off, but the regulations are beginning to take hold in other countries and it won't be long before you will be fined for farting indoors... :sly:

LOL! THAT is Scarey man!

My intent with the NAFTA comment was kindof tied into what GC is saying. The entire thing, under the guise of promoting free trade and good will to our northern and southern neighbors, was really a heavily lobbied big money effort for big business to be able to move manufacturing operations to Mexico. Almost a 3rd world country where, with no tarrifs, parts and products can be manufactured at less than 25% of the cost of doing it here. It's all about THEIR bottom line and shareholder value, and THAT makes their bonuses. If anyone works for a large corporation, and I do and have, do not ever think the PR they feed you that they are working for you is true. I haven't met ONE that would be the least bit generous unless it was a tax write-off and got their name publicized some way.

Really has nothing to do with or for Canada. I grew up near a GM plant (Lordstown), and nearby was Delphi/Packard in Warren, Ohio that made all the electronics and wiring harnesses for the cars and trucks not only built there, but for several other plants. They're gone. To where? Juarez, Mexico, where, and get this, most of the children of the workers walk the border to school everyday to El Paso, Texas, America! Who's paying for THAT! We are! NAFTA!! Read the fine print.

UAW to blame? A big part of it, to be sure, but corporate greed has a lot more to do with it. I think I made the point on here once that 30 years ago, CEO's and top Execs from Fortune 500 companies made around 20 to 30 times the median wage of the companies they ran. The last peek into this was in 2005 that I saw and they make somewhere upwards of 200 times the same number..........and THAT is an average of much fewer employees! Unions can be blamed for a lot, but corporate, and individual greed has done far more damage to American business than anything Jimmy Hoffa could have ever done.

Dont want to prolong this or start a major border incident but your government only wants to free trade a long as you get the benefit, just look at examples like softwood lumber as long as the benefit flows south fine as soon as its the other way we get tarriffs and new quotas. guess thats what comes with living next to a large neighbour, you sneeze we get the cold.
