Title: Traffic Rant
Post by: B.CR33CH on March 03, 2016, 08:28:03 AM
I'm sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the 91, figured this could be a cool topic since anyone that lives in California deals with traffic almost on a daily basis.... Today I would like to focus on What middle school and high school kids should learn to better their lives instead of bullshit classes like ceramics, drafting, art, computer and drama. They should teach gun control, taxes, sex Ed real sex Ed not some bullshit, self defense, resume writing, interview classes, money management, basic citizens rights, healthcare since it's the law now stupid ass Obama , purchasing cars and homes, applying for college and college loans. Just a little traffic discussion to pass time. Feel free to argue or agree 👍🏻

Corporate law.

If I had it to do all over again I would have studied environmental sciences. This planet is going to hell in a hand basket.

First off, I do agree that there does need to be more "life skills" classes offered in our public school systems. But 3/4 of kids today don't even care enough to pay attention to what is going on in the classroom.
2 problems, students think cellphones/social media is more of a priority and are constantly on them in the classroom. Secondly, now that "Joe" didn't care and isn't doing well in school who does the parents blame. Not the kid who dosnt care, shows up late and is constantly on there phone. The parent blames the teacher who is under payed, under funded, and has a over crowded class room.

Now, next time you want to go calling art and ceramics bullshit classes you should think about what you are saying. 90% of students that take these classes are the kids that are better off and trying to prepare themselves for college, Because? They are college requirements !!!!!!!Good arts teacher actually integrate a ton of life skills into their curriculum like resume writing, cost, and selling.

How would I know, Ive been a ceramic arts teacher for six years now. Now I do agree common common core is a crock of shit, I do think ceramics and other arts are essential to give these kids a creative out.

Sincerely a bullshit ceramics teacher

I read that and was like Jake!!! Jake to the courtesy phone please!!!

I agree with some of it, yes we need more life skills. I personally did not take much int he ways of "art" but i did take photography. It was the only class in high school i looked forward to attending. He taught us all kinds of real world lessons.

Personally i dropped out of High School. Some reasons of my own, and i ended up going back and finishing with a degree not a GED. But if i could do it again, i think i would of liked to be in some sort of private school where the teachers and parents are able to agree on a curriculum.

In fact, my daughter will be going to private school. Ill sell everything i own just to pay for it if i have to

I completely agree that kids don't pay attention and social media/ phones are a big distraction. I'm Sorry I might have throw the word bullshit loosely around, remember this is just my opinion & more of a hobby/ fun. And I know a lot of kids take it because it is an easier class not saying that it isn't need or be replaced but these life skill classes that I mentioned should be put in front of those classes and should be a requirement. I love art and photography and I think anyone that does will always pursue it. Setting are youth up for a successful future is my main concern because they are the future. Common core is complete bullshit and confuses kids more then making them more proficient at math.  Sorry if I hurt your feelings Jake I just know kids take it because 50% of them realize it's and an easy and fun class. There are also teacher that don't give two shit also. There will always be problems. Remember this is a traffic rant, obviously I was in a bullshit mood.

I dropped out of high school went and got Ged then next day and went to the army the next month with a waiver. Wanting to be successful and determination played a big role in my life coming from a family that was splitting apart when I was in high school and parents not caring if I went to school or not, luckily I had one role model in my life that looked out for me and always pointed me in the right deriction helped me become the person I am today. With that being said regardless private school or public they both have pros and cons, parenting and good role models play big parts in each aspect, for instance if you have a family that is well off but is never there for you but they stick you in a private school doesn't mean they will learn more or be better off then a kid in public school that has involved and supportive parents/ role models. Now this is just another option but I rather my kid deal with the real world in public school and me save money to put them through college then spend money on private schools. Just sayin

It's all good bud.
As an educator I do agree that the youth today is extremely out of touch. "Common sense isn't so common"

This common core deal is the worst thing that has hit education since no child left behind.
Originally Common core was supposed to tie in life skills to normal curriculum but Obama and the CTC turned it into what we see today. Crap!

I have an 8 year old daughter and a five year old son, it's so hard for me to try to explain to my daughter what these common core math problems are asking and the strategy/ terminology they would like for you to use to solve the problem and she's extremely sharp math student. My wife gave up cuz she just doesn't understand it either. But how could possibly expect anything good from our president.

Yeah it's just a big mess. Man I would to loved to have you teach me growing up, one badass teacher squeezing nitrous on the weekends 👌🏻 that's a role model in my eyes!! Amen!! It's rough, I thought I was extremely good at math and can do it in my head quickly so it makes no sense to me why you would ever want to do it that way, it's almost like teaching kids Pig Latin to make better sense of English in my eyes. ThanKs OBUMMER

Honest question,  forgive my ignorance.

Why are students allowed to have their phones powered up in class?

When I was in High School,  we got yelled at for passing a damn note to see if someone wanted to hang out after school.

Times have changed. That's for sure.

I say no phones until after class time is over.

The sense of entitlement of this new generation is appalling.

I work with a newbie and I've caught him on his phone numerous times during work hours,  I told him straight up, if I catch you again, you're off the job. 20 minutes later, I caught him again, I sent him home. Hope it was worth losing a days pay over.

true about the kids fighting the teachers. Work for the district three kids beating on a female teacher and a maintenance worker stopped it and held a kid till help came and he lost his job!!!! Don't hear about that stuff on the news!! So just gives the kids more ammo and know we can't do anything about it! See it every day sickening!!!!!!

This...!! Mind you have a BS in Construction with a minor in Accounting, I had to complete math through calculus. As well as my grandfather was a college level calculus teacher for over 30 years. Yes I know math.

I get confused trying to explain the process to complete the equations... Granted I struggle slightly with proper English, but still.

Common core is ridiculous and the teachers none spend all year teaching these kids how to pass a test, not to actually learn anything. It's all about how to get the best test scores, it's extremely frustrating as a parent.

It's just plain stupid, all it does is confuse the shit out of the students and set them up for failure on tests. I never made it to calculus myself but I am very savvy at math because I use it all day long at my job as a fabricator. I couldn't even imagine seeing the common core way of doing algebra. My daughter is in second grade now so I'm hoping it will be gone by the time I have to cross that bridge. I feel like telling her not to listen to the teacher and teach her myself.

This is an interesting topic. When I went to HS in the 90s, we learned just about everything. I went to private school. I came from a low income family when majority of othet students were not. If you have a boy about to enter HS, look into Don Bosco Technical Institute in Rosemead. You won't be disappointed. It was a great foundation.

High school was not the wonder years that I am supposed to look back on.  If I could do it over, and I am hoping this is what my daughter will do:

Co-enrollment in high school and at the community college.  Each college unit is worth three high school credits.  The best part is that a student who is co-enrolled only pays about the amount of ONE unit to be enrolled in TWELVE units (full-time) at the community college.

This offers some options;  1.) The student can graduate early and could even graduate with an AS degree before they receive their high school diploma.  2.) Could take electives in high school and graduate on-time

The biggest thing for me is, if the student will go on to pursue a bachelor's degree, he/she will have at least a two-year jump on life.  Of course the tuition expenses being reduced to 1/12 is substantial too.

Pretty much what my daughter did with a larger time commitment because she wanted to be in the high school marching band (saxaphone).

She is about to graduate this summer from UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor's in linguistics.

Couldn't be prouder.
